Been four hours stuck in snow in kent

We have been stuck in Chatham now for four hours. Got about 7 miles maybe? Think we will be stuck in the car overnight now.

It snowed about 3-4 inches in one hour.

We've been in this situation. At one point, traffic was driving the wrong way down a bloody motorway, as people gave up and tried to turn around - so scary.

It went on for 4 hours and we gave up and booked into a Travelodge that we passed.

Good luck, OP. Glad you've got supplies - you sound organised!

I didn't hear about snow falling until this morning! I check my weather app every single day religiously and snow wasn't predicted.
Hope you get home safe op!

Yes I had no idea snow was predicted. Neither did my mum. I think this was quite unexpected. Plus it was really hard telling what roads was shut. No signs saying bluebell hill was blocked. Carnage!

I'm obsessed by snow in winter and switched my plans to get home by 2pm.

As soon as I hear the word, I think public transport will just pack up. Not much experience of driving but dad got stuck on a motorway overnight after work once...only about 2inches of snow he said.

hope you get home asap, good on you for foil blankets, I told him to get those and he thought I was mad!

All we need is mandatory snow tyres for a couple of inches of snow. Job done.

So dangerous. I hope you get out soon op.

Which app is this? Been dreading it more than a week!

But we rarely ever get snow like this - it's a couple of days a year, if that.

It would be such a waste to spend all that money.

@thelobsterquadrille This is absurd and shortsighted. You don’t think having shipping trucks jackknifing and blocking major artery roads for 4 – 6 hours isn’t a waste of time and money??

Zosime · 12/12/2022 00:15

Kent, in December, what the frig is going on?

Parts of Kent, especially East Kent, often get cut off when it snows. Doesn't anyone remember the time back in the '80s when supplies had to be airlifted by helicopter to the Isle of Sheppey?

Its been reported in the media for days! On the majority of major weather forecasting news. Its been impossible to miss.

Courage op 🎉🎉🎉

Hope you're back home safe soon

Stuckinsnowinkent · 12/12/2022 00:30

I always side eye the bbc weather and no snow this far south was shown.

Snow at clacket Lane services but I think on the home run now. Good job we pulled off and abandoned the m20 idea. It literally went from.nothing to 50p sized snow which layer immediately. I feel for everyone who could get up the hills. We was struggling then fron no where two lads was pushing us. God bless them

I remember it well.

Our local farmer fired up his old pasteurization equipment on about day 3, as our village was snowed in with his herd of dairy cows.

Great for us. Not so great for the rest of the Towns.

The BBC app didn't mention snow where I am till it fell. We are now covered. And the Met office admits it didn't realise how much there would be!

caringcarer · 12/12/2022 02:05

Hope you get home safely. Always sensible to have a blanket, snow shovel, bottles of water and snacks in car. I always have a packet of shortbread around this time of year.

HowDoWeDoThisPlease · 12/12/2022 02:07

Download the metoffice weather app op for future reference. They’ve had a snow warning for the south east corner for last evening and overnight on there for a good 24 hours or more.

ITSSSSCHRISTMASSS · 12/12/2022 02:19

Was caught in an unexpected snow storm yesterday with an 8 & 5yo. Luckily no major delays or incidents that I was aware of, but has definitely got me prepared for tomorrow and future trips. It was a fairly reputable bad stretchy part of the motorway,

On top of that, DH saw 4 accidents yesterday morning dropping above children off, and I’m guessing from the skid marks outside our house yesterday morning we were very lucky our house wasn’t driven into.

My first thought would be "where can I have a wee?"

How are you managing, wee wise?

Get out of the car and have a wee? Obviously a bit tricky when in a town and not in open country side but still doable?

I never understood why there arent winter tyres in the UK. It feels like UK is choosing to have a disaster every time is snows.

PaulaTrilloe · 12/12/2022 02:36

I have a f2f interview planned Monday afternoon but I've been feeling like I am coming down with a cold, sneezing etcI

I bit the bullet and have requested a teams online interview instead or a reschedule.

Suspect trains won't be great either

Why did you go out in the snow?

Do you know Kent at all? It is one of those places where lots of snow can arrive quite suddenly. I was very lucky once coming back from Rochester. I was on a train to Chatham and the guard advised us to get out at Rochester and go back to London. It had been cold and frosty when we started but in half an hour the snow had poured down. I was fine but apparently the army were called in to dig people out of their cars. Even the weather forecasters are talking about 'unexpected snowfall' in the south east tonight.

There are winter tyres in the UK just not many people buy them outside of Scotland and likely people wouldnt bother changing back to summer tyres. All season tyres would be fine or snow socks.

Onesailwait · 12/12/2022 02:48

Hope you get home safely. Its not just the UK. I'm in Canada, admittedly we don't get the amount of snow some parts do but it's always chaos here too when it does snow. I have all seasons but I still skidded a few times the other week on my way to work. I hope some kids do get the day off . You can't beat a snow day☃️

Furries · 12/12/2022 02:56

I would highly recommend making it a habit to check the Weather thread on here (it’s under “Other” in the list of topics.

@ohyoubadbadkitten is great at providing weather updates all year round.

Weather apps aren’t reliable but, if you’re going to choose one, better to go with the MetOffice rather than the BBC app.

It’s not nice that the OP has been stuck for so long - but it is crazy that this happens. Those photos don’t look like much snow is there. Am not doubting the situation at all, but it’s nuts that that amount of snow causes carnage.

Hope you are now home and in the warm.

Its been in the news for days, first talking about Scotland last Monday that snow was expected from wed in high places then as days went by it started saying yellow warning for South East and London. They even called it the troll of whatever it was called. Predicting temp to drop and snow fall. Then on Friday it was forecasting snow for Sunday evening, I took my laptop home from work incase it happened so I could work from home. My friend was over and flying out of Gatwick yday and I said to her lucky your flight is early cos if snow comes early you will get stuck and low n behold on Saturday night reports of icy conditions and delays to flights.
