@Naem

, the drones Iran has given Russia are superb - cheap, highly effective in numbers - doing the job that Russia wants them to do far more effectively than anything Russia has.

True.

For context (again) if Kyiv's accounts that have made the MSM are accurate in many of these attacks in recent weeks their Air defence systems have been successfully engaging 80% or more of inbound targets.

That's very very impressive, especially when you consider the system has been under pressure for almost a year.

Sadly however any air defence system is likely to be "leaky".

Ukraine increases criminal responsibility for deserters and negligent commanders
Ukraine is a freedom-loving, pro-active, and highly initiative nation. This is reflected in many volunteers and recruits in the Ukrainian Army. While this is great from the motivation, sometimes it clashes with discipline and subordination in the army. On the other hand, there are some cases of negligence from the commanding officers

To bridge the gap in the current legislation, the Ukrainian parliament (Rada) approved a law to increase legal responsibility for the desertion of soldiers and negligence of commanding officers.

War is a horrible affair because soldiers may be asked to sacrifice their lives fighting for the survival of the Nation. The paralysing fear that could compromise the military in this situation is only controlled by discipline in the Army

It is easy to forget what a truly horrible affair war is just sitting at a distance. What they are going through does not bear thinking about.

I like, though, how the directive began by describing the basis of the problem of a lack of discipline as arising from the very positive fact that Ukrainians are full of initiative and freedom loving. It implies that the individual sense of freedom and initiative is good so long as it is balanced with discipline from both soldiers and commanders.

@Alexandra2001
No because 1 in 10 or 9 in 10, the individual is killed tortured raped etc.
The vileness is the same, or we get to treating individuals as numbers.

Look, it is a difficult one - but I guess I think having two cousins rather than none is better, even though you can argue it is purely numbers. Each one of the numbers who survive means something to someone.

The area my grandfather came from had a 97% wipe out rate of Jews. The cousins I mentioned weren't there because they had been forceably deported into Russia (with their parents who died as a consequence) towards the beginning of WW2. My grandfather wasn't there because after being forceably deported into Russia aged 10 during WW1 (end of his schooling), and only getting back to Lithuania in 1921, he decided he wasn't staying and found a way to leave well before WW2. So did one other brother. That was it.

ISW Key Takeaways
www.understandingwar.org/backgrounder/ukraine-conflict-updates

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko likely deflected Russian President Vladimir Putin’s efforts to coerce Belarus into Russian-Belarusian integration concessions on December 19.

Russian forces targeted Kyiv with Shahed-131 and 136 kamikaze drone strikes overnight on December 18-19.

Igor Girkin, a former Russian militant commander and prominent critical voice in the Russian milblogger information space, wrote a harsh critique of the Russian military’s overall performance in the war.

The Donetsk People’s Republic (DNR) reportedly clashed with other Russian occupation authorities regarding basic administration procedures, suggesting tensions between the various occupation administrations in Ukraine.

The Wagner Group has likely built its offensive model around tactical brutality in order to accommodate for and take advantage of its base of poorly trained and recently recruited convicts.

Russian forces continued limited counterattacks along the Svatove-Kreminna line as Russian sources claimed that Ukrainian forces targeted Russian rear positions in Luhansk Oblast.

Russian forces reportedly lost positions south of Bakhmut on December 18 and continued ground attacks near Bakhmut and Donetsk City.

Ukrainian officials reported that Russian forces are pulling back some elements from areas along the east (left) bank of the Dnipro River in Kherson Oblast.

Wagner Group financier Yevgeniy Prigozhin continued efforts to establish the Wagner Group as a legitimate parastatal organization by petitioning notoriously nationalist elements in the Kremlin.

Russian occupation authorities continued to restrict movement within occupied territories and employ societal intimidation tactics.

Ukrainian intelligence admits that our agents "work" on the territory of Russia
Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Ukrainian agents have been working in Russia, conducting operations "using various means".
These operations are complex and require serious preparation, because Russians are well guarding their military facilities.
"Our targets are purely military: objects of the Russian armed forces from which strikes on Ukraine are carried out, in particular logistics centers, command posts or garrisons with a large number of soldiers," said Vadym Skibitskyi, deputy head of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine, in an interview with the German edition Bild.

Russia attacks Kyiv overnight with swarm of self-detonating drones
(www.washingtonpost.com/world/2022/12/19/kyiv-drones-attack-belarus-putin/?utm_campaign=wp_main&utm_medium=social&utm_source=telegram)KYIV, Ukraine β€” Russia attacked Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities in the early hours of Monday with a horde of self-detonating drones β€” once again bombing critical infrastructure but with a sinister tactical shift that seemed intended to deprive Ukrainians not only of heat, electricity, and water but also of sleep.
Air raids sirens rang out in Kyiv at 2 a.m., the shrill sound amplified by the emptiness of the capital’s streets during its overnight curfew.
Russia has been bombing Ukrainian cities relentlessly with missiles and drones since early October seeking to destroy the country’s energy grid and leave citizens without urgent services in the frigid winter, including a heavy missile barrage on Friday.
But Monday’s strikes mark the first time Russia had sent such a large fleet of drones overnight.

less Russian personnel losses, but two helicopters down.

I think it's more that Commerce is King. There is a far right movement here (including some astonishing bloke who really believes that we're run by lizardmen etc!) but I dont think they're that influential in this case.

It's not pretty though for anyone on a low income. Not pretty at all.

That was interesting, thank you.

Also, I would agree with your take that there are degrees when it comes to being vile. My paternal family, and the community they came from, was at the receiving end of massacre, torture and starvation during WWII, but most of them survived. So while what some individuals experienced was horrific and fatal, it wasn't on a par with the Holocaust.

I can understand why the Israelis, after such a huge proportion of the world's Jews died in the Holocaust, consider it their first duty to keep their nation safe. I also wonder what they are doing on the quiet to help the Ukrainians.

Lukashenko is trying to ensure his own survival. Sending the small number of troops he has (10-15K was one estimate I saw) into the meatgrinder would be wildly unpopular, and then he would have no troops to crush the unrest.

Those small numbers wouldn't have a material impact on the battlefield anyway. Putin would throw them into the fighting in the Donbas, and in a month or two they'd be combat ineffective. There's no reward, only risk if he goes along.
