How often do you wash your hair?!

I saw a video earlier, I believe it may have been students at a pretty well known hair stylists (although I can’t for the life of me remember which now) being asked how often they wash their hair. Most said once a week, quite a few once a month. There seemed to be a bit of shock when a couple said they washed theirs everyday or every other day.

How often do you wash yours? Any one know how often you are supposed to? I only ask as I wash mine every other day and by then it’s feeling pretty oily and looking like crap… maybe I’m washing it too often?! Dry shampoo does nothing for me though…

I have very fine hair that gets greasy quickly. I used to wash it every day but over lockdown trained it to cope with an every other day wash.

SilverGlassHare · 01/12/2022 21:50

Every day. If I leave it, it feels horribly greasy. I used to do it every other day but by the afternoon of the second day, it was vile.

it’s not just the grease, though. It’s cooking smells, DC’s mucky hands stroking it, pollution, the cat ‘grooming’ me during the night. I’d feel less than clean if I didn’t wash it every day when I shower.

megletthesecond · 01/12/2022 21:50

Every day. Although I don't shampoo every day.
My hair is fine and wavy and looks awful if not freshened up. I didn't wash it often in lockdown and it looked so dull and greasy.

Normally every 4 days or so, fringe on its own more often. But since being pregnant once a week.

Beachbabe1 · 01/12/2022 21:53

Pre covid twice a week. 3 times if going out out. Post covid and WFH once a week!! Its a blessing as washing, drying and straightening is such a chore!!

Mummyto2rugrats · 01/12/2022 21:54

Every day sometimes twice if I exercise late in the day.

Hattie72 · 01/12/2022 22:00

Every day as I go swimming or to the gym.

Ladyof2022 · 01/12/2022 22:13

It depends on so many things!
One extreme: it's summer, my scalp is sweaty, my long hair is worn hanging down, and I spend a lot of time outdoors, my hair picking up road dirt and raffic fumes which are in the air. Every night I feel like shampooing it.
Other extreme. It's winter. I am not sweating from my head follicles. I am wearing my hair up in a bun and I rarely go out of the house. In this case I shampoo it once a week.

SquigglePigs · 01/12/2022 22:17

Every 2 to 3 days. Day 1 it looks good, day 2 looks it's best, day 3 fine (although notably less good by the end of the day), day 4 definitely needs washing!

Hold on, does peri make hair weaker ? On top of all the other joyful nonsense 🤬

It's the only explanation I can think of. I used to have very thick hair. Not anymore. No diet changes etc.

ShakeYourFeathers · 01/12/2022 22:24

Every other day. It's more often if I've been swimming or I have an event where I'm dressing up or something

justasking111 · 01/12/2022 22:25

Every five days. Stopped using conditioner. Only wash once with a shampoo toner. Dry naturally in warm weather, in cold weather just blow dry the roots. My hair was thinning during menopause. This reversed it. My hair is long and wavy, now it's thick again. I think the dyes I used pre covid didn't help either

DipmeinChoc · 01/12/2022 22:28

Usually every 3/4 days, very thick, long, wavy and shiny hair. I try not to touch the scalp too much with my hands and use a boar hair brush which helps distribute the oils.

CombatBarbie · 01/12/2022 22:31

Once a week unless I've got formal stuff on. Used to be every 2nd day but lockdowns were a saving grace! Even my teen washes every 4th day and is quite anal about it 😂

aSpanielintheworks · 01/12/2022 22:33

Very fine red head, every day without fail!

Rinatinabina · 01/12/2022 22:34

Everyday, most days twice but a) I live in a very hot and dusty place b) I’m verging on OCD, I’ve managed to stop a lot of other things but the showering thing is a sticking point for me.

scrivette · 01/12/2022 22:41

Once a week, long thick hair. It looks best on day 3 when it's stopped being frizzy from washing.

vdbfamily · 01/12/2022 23:11

once a week.

XenoBitch · 01/12/2022 23:24

Every 7-10 days.

Simplelivingisharderthanitlooks · 01/12/2022 23:57

onlythreenow · 01/12/2022 20:48

Once a week. I could probably go longer.

This made me laugh....

And feel quite envious.

DuchessofSandwich · 02/12/2022 13:40

Depends on if it's coloured or highlighted. When I have highlights (once every five years or so) I hardly need to wash it, when it's natural I need to wash it at least every other day.

TofuonToast · 02/12/2022 18:20

don’t but it. I tried for three days and it’s just nasty. And I have long thick ish hair so supposedly the one that doesn’t need washing so much. I also have oily skin too so I think I’m just a natural greaseball unfortunately!

the80sweregreat · 02/12/2022 18:46

Every other day

Passthecake30 · 02/12/2022 19:03

Pre covid, 3 times a week. Now, twice a week if I remember, or every 5 days at a minimum. Wfh helps!

BobbyBobbyBobby · 02/12/2022 19:15

Always before a special occasion but twice a week usually.

I could get away with washing it less as I’ve ditched all shampoo, conditioners and treatments etc.

i now way my hair in ‘shock horror’ Fairy washing up liquid!

My hair has always been in good condition but now it’s in fantastic condition.

No, it doesn’t strip my hair but it never gets greasy and my hair feels and looks lovely and shiny and full.

Its also stopped my scalp from itching and I occasionally used to get spots on my scalp but no more since I started using washing up liquid.

It sounds mad but it’s the best thing I’ve ever done for my hair and I get comments asking what I use.

I use the blue anti bac one but the original al one is good too!

If it’s kind enough for Nanette Newman’s hands it’s kind enough for my head.

It lathers is well but is very easy to rinse out.

Ive got other family and friends on to it and they all rave about it too! A few with teenage les in the family have got the teens to use it and it’s stopped them from having lank greasy hair and their hair is in great condition using it.
