How often do you wash your hair?!

I saw a video earlier, I believe it may have been students at a pretty well known hair stylists (although I can’t for the life of me remember which now) being asked how often they wash their hair. Most said once a week, quite a few once a month. There seemed to be a bit of shock when a couple said they washed theirs everyday or every other day.

How often do you wash yours? Any one know how often you are supposed to? I only ask as I wash mine every other day and by then it’s feeling pretty oily and looking like crap… maybe I’m washing it too often?! Dry shampoo does nothing for me though…

I used to have to do it every other day because it got so greasy, but I think it’s a vicious circle - the more you wash it and strip out the natural oils, the more your scalp makes to compensate. I now do it twice a week, using sulphate-free shampoo. I could get away with once a week, because it takes much longer to get greasy now, but it helps to have a mid-week washing for styling purposes.

Every 4-5 weeks.

What the fuck is going on here?! Every day or it looks like I could fry a full English on it!

That is exactly the reason why, you wash too much . Get yourself a dry shampoo and brave it for a week and you’ll see a noticeable difference

Every second day.

StampOnTheGround · 01/12/2022 21:00

Thick hair, usually once a week, very occasionally twice

hidethexylophone · 01/12/2022 21:00

Usually about twice a week for a full wash, but I will rinse it while I'm in the shower and just wash my fringe and around my hairline as I work out a lot so those bits get sweaty/greasy, even when the rest doesn't need washing. If I washed my whole head every time I exercised I'd be doing it pretty much 6 days a week, which does me no favours.

Aquivers · 01/12/2022 21:02

For years I washed my hair daily (very fine hair). Last year I've discovered that second day I just use water (ie under shower, wet hair), third day I use conditioner. My hair is so much better. I would never have believed it.

I still of course have to blow dry every day.

thelobsterquadrille · 01/12/2022 21:05

Everyday but I have really fine hair that goes greasy very quickly.

I also work outside and with animals and end up getting sweaty as anything, so I jump in the shower and wash hair as soon as I get in.

SlashBeef · 01/12/2022 21:07

Once a week max. I have afro hair, it doesn't get greasy even if I leave it longer than a week. I love that it triggers the daily washers :)

MayISuggestSomeThickCutSteakChipsToGoWithThat · 01/12/2022 21:10

Twice a week, although I did wash it yesterday as well as I changed my bedding over to my Xmas bedding

Pebbles16 · 01/12/2022 21:17

When I used to commute (central London) it was every day because of the dirt. Now 2-3 times a week. A bobble is my best friend

I swim every morning and have short hair so wash my hair every day. I can't imagine only washing it once a week, it's something I don't like about long hair, that people wash it far less than they would short hair.

I have short hair and wash it once a week. Surely it depends on the type of hair someone has as to how often they need to wash it. Why do you think hair should be washed daily, how does it get so dirty, not everyone has greasy hair.

My head needs washing as much as the rest of my body. I swim every morning, all of my body gets wet, then I wash all of my body including my head. It's not about grease, it's about all the same reasons as I wash the rest of my body.

TenPenceMix · 01/12/2022 21:20

Every day.

PeloFondo · 01/12/2022 21:20

Couple of times a week. It doesn't get greasy but it does get tangled. Curly fine hair. Takes an hour to diffuse to 90% dry and I do not have time for that daily!

torthecatlady · 01/12/2022 21:21

Once or twice a week, usually twice. I find it gets greasy more quickly the more often I wash it.

PeachSquashAddict · 01/12/2022 21:21

Once a week, it’s very curly so a lot of effort to wash but thankfully doesn’t get greasy until the one week mark.

ScrambledOrPoached · 01/12/2022 21:21

It was daily, but I am sick of it, so now it’s twice a week. I’ve been doing that for months and it’s still an oil slick the day after - ‘training’ is absolute bullshit for me. I am literally full of dry shampoo the next day and in hair up styles until the next wash - and by then it’s so greasy it doesn’t even need a hair band and I have to exfoiliste the roots due to dry shampoo build up. But my hair is long and I can’t be arsed to dry it daily in the winter.

Lemonademoney · 01/12/2022 21:27

Used to be every other day but I’ve noticed in the past year or so that my hair doesn’t get as greasy as it did so I do stretch to every three days when I can. Less blow drying seems to agree with my hair.

Pickingmyselfup · 01/12/2022 21:29

Used to be every day then I managed to stretch it to every other day, now trying to stretch to every 2 days. Since I started bleaching it it has got less greasy but on the downside it isn't as healthy. My fringe is the worst for looking greasy but I've started pinning it back when it looks terrible. I need to wear my hair up for work and it's not very often I go out anywhere nice enough to need my hair down so I'm powering through the "needs washing every other day" to train it 🤞

catsandkid · 01/12/2022 21:33

Twice a week usually

Favouritefruits · 01/12/2022 21:34

Three times a week, my hair is super greasy I couldn’t wash it any less.

user1487194234 · 01/12/2022 21:34

every other day

alpaca44 · 01/12/2022 21:36

Every day.

It’s very fine so dries naturally within an hour while I have breakfast and get dressed.

When I was in my twenties I’d wash every other day but i can’t get away with that any more.

ladymarmiteee · 01/12/2022 21:43

Have to do mine everyday. I wish I didn't as it's such a pain but it's fine and greasy. Even if it doesn't look greasy my scalp feels so oily and makes the rest of the skin on my head and neck feel dirty. It's quite disgusting really.

TheClitterati · 01/12/2022 21:46

I used to wash it twice a week. But now I'm going to gym or pool a lot so I'm washing it most days.
