How often do you wash your hair?

And what hair type would you say you have?

My hairdresser has told me washing my hair every 2 days is not right for my hair type and I should try to wait a week. My hair is very thick and long.

I am going to give this a try because I would save a lot of time!

Interested to hear what others do

I have 4c hair thick and kinky.
I wash my hair once a week otherwise it washes out all the oils and it becomes dry and breaks

dontgobaconmyheart · 22/11/2022 15:27

I generally wash it daily, I just prefer to. I could 'get away' with washing it every other day but don't like how it feels despite the fact it looks fine. I don't like dry shampoo etc so wouldn't use those. Washing and drying it takes half an hour or so, so it's no huge burden.

Hair I'd say is normal, not fine or thick, quite a lot of it and its long and in good condition as it's never been coloured etc.

Beginningless · 22/11/2022 15:28

I’m usually every other day and hair is quite fine.

Thick and shoulder length.
I wash it most days but that's because I exercise most days and it gets sweaty. I can leave it 2 days if i don't exercise but by then it smells greasy and starts to itch.

Numbat2022 · 22/11/2022 15:32

Every day. I know it's not ideal (and it definitely fades the colour quickly) but I hate how it feels if it hasn't been washed. I do occasionally give it a day off but I spend that day very aware of my hair, in a bad way. Dry shampoo makes my head itch and my hair never sits right after it's been slept on.

I have fine but plentiful, mid-length hair, very straight and quite flyaway, quite oily skin and scalp.

Claudia84 · 22/11/2022 15:38

My hair is thick and long too. I try and eek it out to about three days and it is better for it. But saying that I always think it looks better when first washed. I rarely use the hairdryer which probably also helps (but makes it look a bit shit on the second day as the nice wave it gets turns to bed head)

Back when I had very short hair I didn't wash it for about three months. Rinsed it but didn't use shampoo. It did actually turn into really good condition but actually felt like dog: cat hair (is that a thing?). I washed it almost to remember what it felt like and it was really strange - felt really light and thin (probably all the grime washed out)
Did some odd things in my 20s...

FourChimneys · 22/11/2022 15:38

Daily but only using shampoo two or three times a week. The rest of the time is a rinse in wa water.

boboshmobo · 22/11/2022 15:39

Once a week! It's thick and curly. I have a cycle of down days and up days and a myriad of hair 'do's I rotate until wash day again.
Life is too short to diffuse it for an hour a day!

Pythonese · 22/11/2022 15:40

Every day.

FourChimneys · 22/11/2022 15:41

warm water obviously 😃

Swissnotswiss · 22/11/2022 15:41

Every other day or every day. The bane of having super fine hair!

Latenightreader · 22/11/2022 15:41

I used to wash my hair (thick, varies between chin and shoulder length) every two or three days, but since the first lockdown it is once a week. Saves a lot of time and a bottle of shampoo lasts for ages! My mother started doing the same, and her hair is far less brittle than it used to be so it really worked for us.

Me too, although sometimes twice a week if I'm feeling fancy.

Again, my hair is thick and curly and I can't bothered faffing around with it more than that - I do sleep with it 'pineappled' and wear a silk sleep bonnet, which helps me get a bit more value out of it.

If I've been to the gym, I just rinse it with warm water when I'm in the shower.

PeloFondo · 22/11/2022 15:42

Wavy fine hair but lots of it - I wash it twice a week usually

Iliveinanoodie · 22/11/2022 15:43

I had an aunt with waist length, thick hair. Every other wash, she just used to wash the scalp area. Genius.
Myself, every 3 days or after exercise, or heavy rain!. Basically, whenever the fringe looks a bit parted.

TwoRockSalmonAndAHaporthOfChips · 22/11/2022 15:43

Long and curly, prone to dryness and breaking, so about every 4-5 days, depending on what I’ve been doing. I’ll wash it straight away if I’ve been sweating, regardless of how long since the last time.

boboshmobo · 22/11/2022 15:43

@AffIt im lucky mine just stays where I put it so don't even worry about it at night .

I also do two French Plaits if it's really annoying me .. sometimes I leave it like that and go ten days 🤣

whoruntheworldgirls · 22/11/2022 15:44

Roughly every 4-5 days. Leave as long as possible if it's not greasy as it's such a faff to dry and straighten

Stressfordays · 22/11/2022 15:44

Waist length, very thick and naturally curly hair. I wash once every 7-10days. Could probably go 2 weeks+ if I wanted as never looks greasy.

gianfrancogorgonzola · 22/11/2022 15:44

Once a week to avoid too much heat. This keeps it in really good condition . I alternate one week olaplex / one week deep condition as a treatment.

purplecorkheart · 22/11/2022 15:44

i have super fine, oily hair. I normally wash it every second or every third day. I used to do daily and was advised not to by my hairstylist.

Itisbetter · 22/11/2022 15:45

Once a week or longer, I have very thick long swishy hair and I’ve never washed it much. I oil it at least once a month.

cookiecreammmpie · 22/11/2022 15:47

Every day. I've got fine shoulder length hair. I've done this for years. I've tried doing it every other day as suggested by people who said it would get less greasy but that didn't work.

ArabeI · 22/11/2022 15:48

Wavy, fair, average in terms of thickness, but long; below waist when straight or wet. I wash once or twice a week, on average. More in summer or sometimes after exercise.

JimJamJolly · 22/11/2022 15:49

I have very long, very thick curly hair which currently I straighten (go through phases of curly and straight!).

I wash it once a week. Generally wash it one day and leave it to dry naturally (takes hours - but I've never got round to replacing my broken hair dryer!). Straighten it the next day (takes 45 mins to an hour).

Occasionally (if go to the office or out somewhere) I might freshen it up between washes by doing a 'fringe/top of hair' wash, but it does look ok without doing this.

Years ago I used to wash my hair every other day but it really dried it out. Had to 'train' my hair to last a week by gradually increasing the number of days between washes.
