Films you see differently as an adult...

I presume this has been done before but fuck it, it's Saturday night and I'm bored. So I'll start...

Mrs Doubtfire. As a child I saw Miranda as a boring, stuck up cow. As an adult I see her as a successful, independent woman exasperated with her man child husband who gives me The Ultimate Ick. And then some. I'm gobsmacked she ever married him. Stuart was a capable, equal partner not the villain I once thought him to be. Anyone else?

Sandra Dee wasn't Sandy though, she was some 1950s star.

I never knew this. Having googled Sandra Dee, I can see why it fits

DuchessDandelion · 29/11/2022 14:56

@TheWonkyAnkleClub that makes sense!

I remember thinking the same about Mr Bean: that he was a joke at the expense of special needs people. But I mentioned this to someone whose opinion I respected a lot, and she said quite strongly: "No! He's a mean-minded man."

I've never been entirely convinced about that but the point has stuck with me.

As others have pointed out, he's an alien, not a joke at the expense of special needs people, but your friend is right in that he's often spiteful, vindictive and absolutely a mean-minded man alien

I don't buy the alien theory. Just because he dropped down doesn't make him an alien. I always thought he was human but aliens kidnapped him but he was too weird even for them so they dropped him back down to earth. That's my theory.

Mr. Bean is confirmed as an alien in "Double Trouble", the last episode of Season 3 in the animated series, which features a UFO full of Mr. Bean clones that had dropped down Mr. Bean onto planet Earth many years ago and finally reunited with him, but when they come to take him home, they see that his girlfriend Irma Gobb looks sad without him, so they decide to keep him on Earth and erase Irma's memory. As Mr. Bean's people depart from Earth, Bean vows that he will meet them again someday.

Always stuns me how much MNers love Grease. It's mildly entertaining, but nothing to obsess over.

I wanted to love The Other Boleyn Girl. I had thought it was actually about Mary Boleyn and some of the nitty gritty details of the times, and the people left to pick up the pieces. Daft me, it's an ego-trip for Natalie Portman (playing Anne). They don't get shown growing up in France, nobody has red hair (most everyone but Mary Boleyn had red hair in real life). Very very annoying all that. Kristin Scott Thomas couldn't even save that film.

That's interesting. But I still don't buy it, especially as it was in the spin-off animated series and therefore not canon, imo. It seems it was 'retcon'ed. I never saw the animated spin-off and think of Mr Bean as the actual original tv series, so I don't take anything else as canon.

How can it be a retcon if it's confirming something that was already alluded to in the original and loads of people already thought was true? It hasn't changed anything, it's confirmed something.

Anyway, Rowan Atkinson was one of the executive producers for the animated show and voiced the titular character again. It's his character, they were both of his shows, so I would say that Mr Bean being an alien is confirmed.

But it doesn't 'confirm' anything, because it is not the real tv series, it is just that spin-off series take of it. It's possible that he was never meant to be an alien but when the show became extremely popular, they created an animated spin-off and then decided to go with the alien line, but that it may never have been a part of it if the spin-off didn't happen. Therefore imo only the actual tv series is canon. They only did the animated spin-off after the tv series ended.

Annabelle3 · 29/11/2022 22:45

That's to say I understand if you take the animated series as canon, but I don't. I don't consider it the real actual Mr Bean.

CatJumperTwat · 29/11/2022 22:53

I thought the endless Grease discussion was OTT but doing mental somersaults to deny Mr Bean is an alien is... odd!

Politely, it doesn't really matter what you think tbh, it's Rowan's creation and he confirmed it.

Did he actually say it himself? Because unless he came right out and said it, he didn't confirm it. A spin-off is not 'confirmation', it's just a different series. As I said, it's possible he wasn't meant to be an alien in the tv series, but Rowan changed it for the spin-off. I only count the tv series as real and the actual Mr Bean. The spin-off is completely unrelated. There is a difference to the tv series Mr Bean, and the animated spin-off. They are two different shows. One is the original the other is merely a spin-off. I'd like to see where Rowan himself said that the tv series Mr Bean was an alien. Because in absence of him saying it himself, there is not confirmation.

Annabelle3 · 29/11/2022 23:09

Another thing imo that makes me question Mr Bean is an alien is aliens supposedly don't know much about how earth/societies operate. How did Mr Bean know how to get a job, have a flat, do life admin like book in at the Drs (even getting a ticket number to be in line), go to the dentist, even know how to use the drill on himself? That's a bit more 'human' than an alien, one would not expect an alien to understand basic societal operations. Yet Mr Bean knew all that, was able to live daily life in society without any help.

AttilaTheUOkHun · 30/11/2022 13:22

I've got to say in all my years on Mumsnet, a derailment over whether Mr Bean is an alien or not is not one I could have ever predicted.

darisdet · 30/11/2022 15:57

Found this. Though this refers to the animated series.

For a long time, it seemed that Atkinson was undecided himself, or he would rather have us writhing in conjecture. But in 2004, the final episode of the third season of the Animated Series, Double Trouble, appeared to confirm Mr. Bean’s origin. During the episode, a UFO full of Mr. Bean clones that had ostensibly dropped him down to Earth in 1990 finally reunites with its missing passenger. Just as they’re about to set off to their home planet, Mr. Bean’s Earth girlfriend, Irma Globb, looks sad and lonely. Finally showing Earthly compassion, Mr. Bean decides to stay, promising that he will see his clone family again someday.
So there you have it, Mr. Bean is a cloned alien who struggles to fit in with life on Earth.

God, me too.

DH stood in front of the telly just as Johnny was about to mouth, ‘and I owe it all to you’ to Baby at the very end, and I practically rugby-tackled him out of the way so I didn’t miss it.

I love the way he does that.

BiscuitLover3678 · 04/12/2022 08:22

Omg mr bean is definitely an alien! Doing weird and silly thing ie any form of comedy isn’t making fun of special needs people!
