Films you see differently as an adult...

I presume this has been done before but fuck it, it's Saturday night and I'm bored. So I'll start...

Mrs Doubtfire. As a child I saw Miranda as a boring, stuck up cow. As an adult I see her as a successful, independent woman exasperated with her man child husband who gives me The Ultimate Ick. And then some. I'm gobsmacked she ever married him. Stuart was a capable, equal partner not the villain I once thought him to be. Anyone else?

Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
He's a manipulative little shite who's mate should have told him to bog off 😁

I think when Rizzo sings 'The worst thing I can do is to cry in front of you' she's actually meaning Kenicke. They had a fling, she really fell for him but then split up - and she's too proud to let him know how much he hurt her.

The rest of her song is basically how she refuses to be a prick tease because she thinks it's unfair behaviour.

Agree that in Rizzo's song the "you" is Kenickie, IMO, not the mean girls. She doesn't care about the mean girls. She does care about Kenickie but she's too proud to let him know.

Blue Lagoon

At least with the rest of these it isn't real.

What the producers did to Brooke Shields was horrific!

There's a 1983 Rob Lowe/Andrew McCarthy/ Jaqueline Bissett film called Class that's quite problematic. AM has an affair with RL's Mum and it's through such a male gaze. She does t do anything wrong but is painted (again) as the crazy sexual woman.

What did they do to Brooke Shields?

She sang her song just after running into Patty though.
"That's the one I was telling you about!"
cue lots of giggles as they scurried past.
I think it was aimed at the mean girls too
As someone who at school would have comments thrown at them, can say from experience you'd be like to cry in front of you, nope not a chance going to put a front on instead.

Trigger warnings- a University is not a kindergarten. And people who don't know how to.study have no.business there.

Sandy asked her if she was OK just before the song, I always thought the you was Sandy

But Rizzo was a mean girl.

Really? It's funny how other people see things differently. Rizzo was not a mean girl in my version. Rizzo is the 'tough on the outside, straight-talking' girl to me. She's the one who doesn't mess around leading boys on and flirting when she's not really interested, doesn't bitch about other girls behind their backs- she's the one everyone thinks is tough, but really she's vulnerable on the inside.

FancyFanny · 26/11/2022 09:44

Rizzo's song is all about countering how she's seen by the other kids at school. It's aimed at the girls who are gossiping about her behind her back. She's talked about because she's seen as easy for sleeping with boys- but she's saying at least she's not a flirt who leads boys on, and at least she doesn't do things to hurt other people- that wold be worse. But to cry in front of you- I think that's a collective you, not one person in particular- she means to cry, lose face, show her vulnerability in public is the worst thing she could do in her mind.

She's not nice to Sandy though is she! She teases her and is rather unpleasant behind her back at the sleepover. I think the thing with Rizzo is that she learns from Sandy being decent towards her and she therefore becomes a nicer person herself by the end.

cakeorwine · 26/11/2022 09:56

Grease would have been a very different film if - when Sandy mentioned that it was Danny at the beach, the girls would have said "Oh Danny, he's in our high school, shall we all meet up, let's tell him you're here."

FancyFanny · 26/11/2022 10:15

I still don't think Rizzo is a mean girl though- the Sandra Dee song is about showing the contrast between Rizzo and Sandy- Rizzo thinks Sandy is a staff and bore, but she's not intentionally trying to hurt her. Patty Simcox is the mean girl in the film.

FancyFanny · 26/11/2022 10:21

Even Patti is nice really

caroleanboneparte · 26/11/2022 17:23

No Patti is a horrid bully and slut shamer!

She was mean to Sandy cos she was jealous Danny didnt fancy her. Takes the piiss out of her in " look at me I'm Sandra Dee" and is always making mean comments.

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 19/11/2022 22:56

Exactly!

The whole "16 going on 17" song where the girl is so submissive also irks me.

I always shout 'he' s a nazi' at that song just to remind everyone that his point of view is suspect. Marie, whose opinion we are supposed to trust, sings it again but her version basically telling the daughter to wait and not hurry anything.

She devoted an entire song to taking the piss out of Sandy lol "look at me I'm Sandra Dee, lousy with virginity"- shaming someone for being a virgin is just as gross as slut shaming.

I agree that she is singing to the general naysayers/mean girls when she starts the song. But during the song, she sees Kenickie in the background starting up his car and hides from him, after which she finishes the song with "cry in front of you, that's the worst thing I could do". I doubt she means cry in front of silly Patti and gal pals, whose opinion she never gave a toss for anyway.

When Marty spreads the gossip at the drive-in that Rizzo is pregnant, Kenickie approaches her but she bats him off by telling him it isn't his, because she doesn't want to seem vulnerable. She is trying to be brave in front of Kenickie when really she wants his support but her tough girl persona won't let her be vulnerable in front of the one person she does want support from.

marktayloruk · 26/11/2022 23:13

Re Sound of Music- 16 year old has crush on 17 year old. Not exactly original! In.the stage version Rolf indirectly warned Von Trapp to get out while he could!

marvellousmaple · 27/11/2022 05:52

One of my favourite ever songs from a movie. I think the amount of debate it inspires is just one reason why. Wonderfully written, great melody and beautifully song with lots of hidden meaning.
Don't dis Grease. It's fabulous.
Grease 2 on the other hand. What were they thinking??

marvellousmaple · 27/11/2022 05:53

I was referring to Stockard Channing's version.

whynotwhatknot · 28/11/2022 13:48

rizzo might have been vulnerable but she literally sang a song about sandi whist she was in the bathroom about how shes so prim and proper

caroleanboneparte · 29/11/2022 08:35

Sandra Dee wasn't Sandy though, she was some 1950s star.

DuchessDandelion · 29/11/2022 12:23

Since we're still talking about Sandy...I never understood the line "lousy with virginity".

Does it mean she has lice?
Or that she's rubbish with her virginity? In which case does it not sound like that she's careless rather than careful with her virginity?

I assumed that they meant that she's infested with virginity as one would be louse or flea-ridden. She isn't just a virgin, that her virginity defines her.
