In a cafe, and a woman has just complained (funny)

She'd ordered a bacon sandwich and it's just been delivered to the table. She's now moaning because her bacon sandwich has a tiny crumb of black pudding on it. And she doesn't eat pork.

I feel for the poor staff having to explain which animal bacon comes from 😬

(And no, there's no vegan bacon on the menu so not a mix up!)

Unfortunately I don't have a satisfying conclusion for you all. Husband came back in she wrapped her scone up and they've just left! 😕

I need to shift too unfortunately!

😂

My mind went here straightaway, too! 🤣🤣

MatronicO6 · 15/11/2022 13:39

Regularly went to a sandwich shop with a colleague who would regularly order a BLT without the bacon but with cucumber and spring onion and the counter staff would regularly respond "a salad sandwich?" She would always respond with "no, a BLT with cucumber and spring onion instead of bacon"

People pointed out the ingredients of her salad choice were exactly what she was requesting, she persisted in ordering it her way.

For goodness sake! She doesn't eat pork - probably for cultural/religious reasons - in her world 'bacon' is a non pork product - so that makes her 'stupid'?

nobody goes to a cafe expecting turkey "bacon" when you order a bacon sandwich.... jesus christ.

ArabellaScott · 15/11/2022 13:41

She has scone? Sad

OP has scone as she has a prior non-bacon sandwich-related appointment.

Well I feel a little dumb now, as a life long veggie (because Im allergic to a protein in most meats) I for some reason always though Black Pudding was made from sheep (sheep stomach with blood and rice I thought).

Now I feel like 9 pages of people are laughing at me for not knowing my breeds of meat lol.

Clearly, she expected something other than a pork product, so there is at least one person in the world - this woman - who expected something other than what is normally understood by 'bacon' - so it is inaccurate to say 'nobody' does this, unless you believe the OP invented the whole scenario.

fuckthisforagameofdarts · 15/11/2022 13:44

I worked with a Jewish woman years ago. Her husband kept kosher but would also eat spare ribs!
She thought he assumed they were beef and wasn't going to correct him

DH orders a cappuccino without the foam. It's embarrassing.

I'm intrigued....what does he end up with?

Probably a white coffee, which actually makes sense as you cannot order a simple white coffee these days. A flat white would be too strong whereas if you replace the foam layer of a capo with milk you get what used to be a white coffee.

You can get a white coffee- Americano with milk or white Americano. Its what I always drink.

Right but presumably he'd have to ask for a cappuccino without foam but with (flat) milk to get that rather than just a cappuccino without foam? Neither of which are a cappuccino...

I would have thought if you asked for a cappuccino without foam you'd just get an espresso?

You are nearly right. What you have described is a little bit like haggis.

Haggis is a sheep stomach filled with offal, oatmeal, onions, suet, seasoning and spices

Tbf though McDonalds is annoying in that they don't have a plain Quarterpounder - it's a Quarterpounder with Cheese. I hate cheese, so have to remove it from the order before placing the order. Despite it clearly being ordered without cheese & even having a sticker on it saying No Cheese - it still often comes with cheese & promptly gets sent back.
So I have to order a Quarterpounder with Cheese Without Cheese Confused

But at least I know bacon comes from a 🐷!

would that not just be a hamburger?

Mcdonald do a cheeseburger (has cheese) and hamburger (same thing without cheese).

Because people have different cultural understandings of things. Should we really be sneering at people who come from different cultural backgrounds? If 'bacon' to this woman means turkey bacon or vegan bacon, there's probably a good reason for that.

Oh for goodness sake, why does everything become a pulpit opportunity? Bacon was originally from pigs, other derivatives are relatively new and have always been indicated on menus.

Find a different hill to die on, this is getting a bit much now.

Yes, low intelligence would be top if the list.

There's probably not a single person on the planet who is allergic to black pudding, but not bacon or the sort of bread that greasy spoons use, so I don't think we need to worry about cross contamination really.

The fact that we allow people this stupid to vote explains a lot.

I dislike black pudding, when OH was still alive I would cook his black pudding in a different pan but if I were this woman I would simply remove the speck from my bacon butty and get on with enjoying it.

Not correct. There are well known issues in some areas with meat being sold under misleading descriptors:

She's a middle aged white woman with a local accent. I don't think it's a case of a cultural mix up.

Do the bacon sandwiches come with the option of fried onions?

Well, this thread is annoying me - everyone jumping on to sneer at some poor woman - if it isn't religious/cultural, she might have learning difficulties - or, shock horror - simply not be as clever as the average Mumsnetter.

Or as clever as the average tree frog.
