In a cafe, and a woman has just complained (funny)

She'd ordered a bacon sandwich and it's just been delivered to the table. She's now moaning because her bacon sandwich has a tiny crumb of black pudding on it. And she doesn't eat pork.

I feel for the poor staff having to explain which animal bacon comes from 😬

(And no, there's no vegan bacon on the menu so not a mix up!)

Right but presumably he'd have to ask for a cappuccino without foam but with (flat) milk to get that rather than just a cappuccino without foam? Neither of which are a cappuccino...

I would have thought if you asked for a cappuccino without foam you'd just get an espresso?

No, without foam is without foam, not without milk.

howaboutchocolate · 15/11/2022 13:55

Reminds me of the time I worked in a cafe and someone complained their soup was too salty. Fine, you might think. Except when I took it over to her she immediately got the salt and shook a layer of salt over it.

Harrysnippleno3 · 15/11/2022 13:55

You can get a white coffee- Americano with milk or white Americano. Its what I always drink.

The majority of places serve a tiny jug of milk on the side for an Americano with milk. They often ask if you want hot or cold milk but a large coffee with a small about of milk does not make a white coffee.

Im almost impressed that she knew what black pudding is made from. Lots of people don’t (or don’t want to think about it).

And you most certainly don't want to watch them being made!

I run a business in an area with very few Muslims and we have a lot of Muslim clients from Huddersfield/Bradford. We have to repeatedly explicitly say that the bacon and sausage is pork and I have had many many people argue with me. One one occasion a man refused to believe me and bought his son a hot dog - I had no idea what to say or do!

They’re possibly allowed the 0.01% animal content of that.

sweetgrapes · 15/11/2022 13:57

This reminds me of the time many years ago when I first came to England and happily ordered a cheese burger.
I was most put off to see it came with a beef patty and took it back.

The waitress was most annoyed with me too. I am sure she would have had a thread on here grumbling about me. 😂

QuestionableMouse · 15/11/2022 13:57

mam0918 · 15/11/2022 13:49

would that not just be a hamburger?

Mcdonald do a cheeseburger (has cheese) and hamburger (same thing without cheese).

No, because in McDonald's you get your saver menu which is your ham/cheeseburgers and then the slightly larger burgers like the Big Mac and the Quarter Pounder. If you come in and ask for a cheeseburger but expect a Quarter, you're going to be disappointed.

Her scone has just arrived. Looks like a fruit one. I hope she eats grapes 🤣😬

I eat grapes & raisins but I wouldn't eat a fruit scone - I also wouldn't order a fruit scone & would specify I wanted a plain scone.

Maybe this is like the time I told DS that chicken nuggets didn't come from actual chickens, he was about 4 & just learning where food comes from & distraught at the thought. He obviously knows now but maybe no one has ever told this woman the truth about bacon.

'did you mean to say you added too much salt to your soup?' Wink

Maybe she had convinced herself bacon wasn’t from pork? When I was a child my mum used to have students from the UAE, they were Muslim. They were also the loveliest students we’d ever had and my mum made sure she treated them well and we got another fridge so that we could make sure everything we provided them was halal,l. One day I came home from school to find a group of them had made a snack, HAM sandwiches, they swore blind that because it was pink meat it couldn’t be pork as that was pale. We got turkey and chicken ham after that, I’m sure they must have known though and just fancied it as it was in the other (non halal) fridge.

GloomyDarkness · 15/11/2022 14:01

GloomyDarkness; In the days when airlines actually gave you a meal, my DH always ordered a vegetarian one. He wasn't, and didn't claim to be vegetarian; he was just an incredibly picky eater, who didn't eat fish or poultry (which were both frequent options on planes)

Fair enough I can see the logic there and I know some of my Muslin University friends just said they were vegetarian as they found it easier at the time.

However our guest made a huge fuss about being a vegetarian went on and on about it -then proceeded to answer loads of questions on day which showed she ate every meat and fish dish going - and there was always going to be a vegetarian option which some of my meat eating family preferred to have and just ordered.

It was just odd to watch IL nod along as if all vegetarians eat beef and pork and bacon and venison and steak etc all fish and poultry was entirely normal and her DH eyerolling and my family trying to politely saying vegetarian don't eat any of that and her nodding and saying yes but it was just easier to say she was vegetarian with no explanation as to why and then going on she was thinking about going full on vegan but had heard it was hard.

Well, this thread is annoying me - everyone jumping on to sneer at some poor woman - if it isn't religious/cultural, she might have learning difficulties - or, shock horror - simply not be as clever as the average Mumsnetter.

simply not be as clever as the average Mumsnetter.

Why use 8 words when you could use one: thick.

Labnehi · 15/11/2022 14:01

AnApparitionQuipped · 15/11/2022 12:37

Because people have different cultural understandings of things. Should we really be sneering at people who come from different cultural backgrounds? If 'bacon' to this woman means turkey bacon or vegan bacon, there's probably a good reason for that.

Oh please! We're all cringing at this crass virtue signalling on behalf of the white middle aged English woman.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 15/11/2022 14:03

Sorry should have said - the cereal is usually oats.

Maybe she believes it to be unseemly for people to get their oats in a public cafe?

If only Liz Truss had opened up new pork markets - ones that didn't involve the meat of a pig at all; to go with the assured economy-growth policies that promptly tanked the pound and plunged us all into disaster and uncertainty.

This is a marvellous thread - does anybody else remember the thread from some time ago about the OP who had a friend who insisted on calling slices of bread 'toasts': she'd ask for a cheese toast in a cafe and be miffed when they gave her a toastie rather than the cheese sandwich that she believed she'd clearly requested?!

Reminds me of a woman at work who thought a gammon steak came from an animal called a Gammon. She even drew a picture of what said Gammon looked like which looked like some sort of demented chicken. We were all, including her, in hysterics.

I've also been in a restaurant where someone sent their smoked salmon back because it wasn't cooked

We once made the mistake of going on an All-inclusive holiday, I happened to be oin converation with another woman and I said how good the gazpacho was. She said she'd complained because it was cold, expletives deleted and had not believed them when a member of staff explained that it was meant to be chilled, she would be making a claim for compensation when she got home!

CantFindTheBeat · 15/11/2022 13:23

I think I'd have expected the hot fudge sauce to be hot/warm, too - what do you think it should have been?

Yes, the few times I’ve had this the sauce has always been hot.

That’s why it’s listed as “hot fudge sauce.”

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 15/11/2022 14:06

Surely people who don't eat certain foodstuffs for ethical or religious reasons would be MORE likely to be certain of what those foods were in/called, so that they could carefully avoid them?

An omnivore who quite cheerfully eats all meats is far less likely to care or question if their chicken salad ended up with a sliver of beef in it.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 15/11/2022 14:07

Better than a parking thread.

Indeed: a porking thread.

I’d imagine it should be close to a flat white, a drink that sadly seems to be becoming a latte nowadays.

Oh look, when one virtue signal fails, you just pop up with another one! It's like whack-a-mole for tiresome, patronising wokerati.

AnApparitionQuipped · 15/11/2022 13:44

Clearly, she expected something other than a pork product, so there is at least one person in the world - this woman - who expected something other than what is normally understood by 'bacon' - so it is inaccurate to say 'nobody' does this, unless you believe the OP invented the whole scenario.

No what makes you KNOW what she expected?

She clearly just didn't know that bacon is made from pigs.
