In a cafe, and a woman has just complained (funny)

She'd ordered a bacon sandwich and it's just been delivered to the table. She's now moaning because her bacon sandwich has a tiny crumb of black pudding on it. And she doesn't eat pork.

I feel for the poor staff having to explain which animal bacon comes from 😬

(And no, there's no vegan bacon on the menu so not a mix up!)

Unfortunately I don't have a satisfying conclusion for you all. Husband came back in she wrapped her scone up and they've just left! 😕

I need to shift too unfortunately!

I'm sorry but you are going to have to go back and get the full story from the people who work there - nothing less is acceptable.

With all the references to turkey bacon on this thread, surely turkey bacon is really just the normal (PORK!) bacon you put on the turkey to keep the breasts moist? *sorrynotsorry

I was thinking that so I googled the ingredients of black pudding and apart from the seasoning, there is nothing in black pudding that isn’t in a bacon sandwich.

Reminds me of the time a woman snootily told me she was vegetarian as I tucked into a chicken sandwich. Her sandwich was ham. I didn’t reply.

She didn’t come from Oxford?

Randolph hotel in Oxford insisted that as I was vegetarian a ham salad was perfectly fine to eat.
I got told if I didn’t eat ham that I should have said I was vegan. I got the impression as a vegan I would have been presented with a Salmon salad as when I explained what a vegan would eat I was told that was just plain picky (Dh’s company meals out were always at the Randolph. It was a beautiful hotel and for a meat eater quite nice meals. As at the time I was vegetarian I used to eat before hand.

I actually can’t eat any meat or fish it doesn’t agree with me. I will spend hours doubled up in pain with stomach ache

Abraxan · 16/11/2022 18:49

Do a quick dictionary check of what the word bacon is. It is defined as coming from a pig. For example:

"cured meat from the back or sides of a pig."
"a side of a pig cured and smoked;"
"Bacon is salted or smoked meat which comes from the back or sides of a pig."
"meat from the back and sides of a pig, dried, salted, and usually smoked"
"thin, salty meat product that's often served beside eggs at breakfast"
"meat from a pig treated with salt."

Even in muslim countries I have never seen non pork based bacon as just referred to as bacon on its own. It has always stated "turkey bacon" "vegetarian bacon" etc. Same as the sausages too. I assume to avoid any issues like this.

I can't imagine anyone who lives in the UK wouldn't expect that anything labelled bacon wouldn't be of the pork variety unless it said otherwise.

@KettrickenSmiled you are right I should have recognised it was the Surrey banana causing all my issues and hot footed it to sunny countries and tried the many other varieties I'm vaguely aware exist but have never had pleasure of
eating yet.

On plus side have found an on-line butchers selling Stornaway black pudding gifts sets - so that's one birthday present for a family member sorted ( possibly more )and I know where to go when I'm more cash rich and ready to explore all the black pudding possibilities out there.

Delighted that we've given you hope for black pudding - I'd never had any other until we moved north of Watford and I have to say, for me it's not a patch on the Stornaway stuff. Enjoy!

I vaguely remember I think it was a Jewish celebrity in some game show and saying he didn’t eat pork and then saying how much he loved bacon.
I didn’t watch what ever programme it was on but remember catching something about it on my online news feed
I remember seeing some incredulity that he didn’t know bacon was pork

Noangelbuthavingfun · 16/11/2022 19:04

Can you find evidence what else bacon means even in other cultures ?

Interesting. My MIL spent a lot of her working life in a hotel in Oxford (though not the Randolph) and she firmly believed that vegetarians eat fish, and anyone who didn't eat meat or fish must be a vegan. I'm not sure if she ever actually met a lacto-vegetarian but she must have been very confused if she did. I think she would have drawn the line at offering ham to a vegetarian though.

Tbf though McDonalds is annoying in that they don't have a plain Quarterpounder - it's a Quarterpounder with Cheese. I hate cheese, so have to remove it from the order before placing the order. Despite it clearly being ordered without cheese & even having a sticker on it saying No Cheese - it still often comes with cheese & promptly gets sent back.
So I have to order a Quarterpounder with Cheese Without Cheese Confused

But at least I know bacon comes from a 🐷!

I worked in mc’ds in the 90’s and back then they served both quarterpounders; the one without cheese was cheaper. I’m not sure why they pulled the plain quarterpounder from the menu 🤔🤨

@ThistleTits 😂 it was back when M&S did just ham sandwiches with no other condiments etc so probably!

No, but I have been to the Randolph and wasn’t that impressed even as a meat eater 😬

I recall that too - think it was a Come Dine With Me celeb edition.

Don't want that in my tea, thanks.

I'll . . . I'll have mine black, thank you very much . . . 😬

girlmom21 · 15/11/2022 12:41

For goodness sake! She doesn't eat pork - probably for cultural/religious reasons - in her world 'bacon' is a non pork product - so that makes her 'stupid'?

You're literally making up your own story here...

That and I'm wondering if I tell my ds that in my world if I tell ds carrots, peas and broccoli are chocolate he would eat it.

After all - apparently deciding a pork product is non pork is enough...... Confused

That before you consider that's not even what is known about her decision about eating fired pig in a sandwich but not other pig other ways!

Emotionalsupportviper · 16/11/2022 20:12

AnApparitionQuipped · 16/11/2022 16:52

As the above poster has pointed out 'crop milk' has a Wikipedia entry - you could have Googled it, or simply asked 'what is crop milk' rather than posting an eye roll.

Or are you disappointed that 'person goes into a supermarket which sells a range of animal-care products, including products for both wild and domestic birds, and asks for a bird care product they don't happen to stock' isn't a very rich mine for comedy?

Right on every count, except that that isn't an eye roll, and I do find an enquiry for pigeon milk richly comedic.

So right on hardly any counts, really. 😄.

However, you get an extra point for being miserable, so you still get a coconut.

You can share it with your friends if you have any.

It looks like an eye-roll on my screen; if that wasn't the poster's intention, I'm sorry.

Apology accepted.

And I rescind my snark.

No livestocks? Well no, not once they've been turned into bacon, they're not livestocks any more then :-( but they taste good!

Many years ago, my aunt (from near Oxford, actually) tried very hard to persuade my Muslim husband and self to have some M&S salad with 'wafer thin ham'. This was long before it became a thing and she was actually deadly serious that she thought it would be ok for us.

mam0918 · 16/11/2022 20:48

2catsandhappy · 16/11/2022 18:25

I am reminded of a tv show some years ago. Cooking show. The waiter, deadpan, straight faced said, "And the vegetarian option tonight is salmon." I recall thinking, "Um no, if it has eyes and an a**hole it is not vegetarian."

It happens ALL THE TIME (although getting better as time goes on).

When I looked at wedding venues one said they only had 1 veggie option... yep it was Salmon, they got annoyed claiming I (the veggie) was wrong about it not being vegetarian.

Pescitarians who use to call themselves vegetarians have a lot to answer for.
