In a cafe, and a woman has just complained (funny)

QuestionableMouse · 15/11/2022 12:15

She'd ordered a bacon sandwich and it's just been delivered to the table. She's now moaning because her bacon sandwich has a tiny crumb of black pudding on it. And she doesn't eat pork.

I feel for the poor staff having to explain which animal bacon comes from 😬

(And no, there's no vegan bacon on the menu so not a mix up!)

Well, this thread is annoying me - everyone jumping on to sneer at some poor woman - if it isn't religious/cultural, she might have learning difficulties - or, shock horror - simply not be as clever as the average Mumsnetter.

Are there officially no stupid people in your world @AnAnApparitionQuipped ? Have you never thought What a moron! about someone but instead scrolled through a list of possible reasons to absolve them before the thought could take hold?

MichelleScarn · 15/11/2022 16:28

KettrickenSmiled · 15/11/2022 16:24

I don't look stupid - I am a world wide Nomad with experience of other cultures
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

You are a world wide twit who has just made herself look ... stupid.
That, or you are pulling PP's pork leg with your pretentious nonsense.

For some reason I now have the Littlest Hobo in my head 🎶maybe tomorrow I'll wanna settle down, but till tomorrow I'll just keep moving on....🎶 😁

Ofcourseshecan · 15/11/2022 16:28

Great thread, OP, thanks for posting. This could be one for Mumsnet Classics.

ScribblingPixie · 15/11/2022 16:28

"But it all comes from a pig, my love." I'll be laughing over that all day, I can imagine Julie Walters playing the waitress. Great 'overheard', OP.

Great thread, OP, thanks for posting. This could be one for Mumsnet Classics.

It has it all really

AnApparitionQuipped · 15/11/2022 16:32

The point most are missing is that there is no reason for someone not to know what bacon is that is an appropriate subject for laughing and sneering.

  • Having a different cultural understanding - not funny
  • Having low intelligence - not funny
  • Having learning difficulties - not funny
  • Being unwell - not funny

My father has dementia - he no longer has a clue about most foods. Is that hilarious? If it was your relative making such a mistake, would you like the thought of oh-so-clever people laughing at them on a thread?

This thread really does demonstrate Mumsnet at its worst.

So vegan black pudding then?

Best reponse 🤣

Bacon isn't necessarily pork? Heard it all now.

I know. It’s funny if the intent behind people posting this wasn’t so well, not funny.

It does, the accusation that we are the people who brought Jeremy Corbyn down was an unexpected highlight.

Refrosty · 15/11/2022 16:34

Wow. This thread took a turn.

Sorry but if you go to a cafe, ask for bacon and expect a non-pork product; YOU are the problem.

That's all. Default bacon is pork. Fact. If you travel around, this is still the case. I know people who don't eat black pudding for religious reasons, they don't eat it due to the amount of blood involved in the recipe. Not the pork itself.

I'm sorry but if you don't eat bacon you almost certainly don't eat bacon for a reason. The reason, whatever it is, means you would absolutely know what bacon is.

I'm sorry for your father but let's not pretend dementia is at play here.

FabulousFryingpan · 15/11/2022 16:39

Not black country, I'm from the continent. But if you google the ingredients of black pudding in English, it says either pig's blood and pig fat or cow's blood and beef suet. So it can be either. Would guess from people's comments here that it's mostly pig product people have experienced, but it's not a given.

I'm surprised no one took offence at the lady saying 'my love'.
Sure there was a thread about that or something similar the other day.

AnApparitionQuipped · 15/11/2022 12:40

For goodness sake! She doesn't eat pork - probably for cultural/religious reasons - in her world 'bacon' is a non pork product - so that makes her 'stupid'?

yes, that absolutely makes her stupid. And it shows the problem of being so far removed from our food that someone can eat bacon and not know what animal it came from.

Everanewbie · 15/11/2022 16:50

I find it amusing how people seem to fall over themselves to justify someone who is so wrong and being so unreasonable.

She complained about black pudding being present with the fact that not eating pig products as an aggravating factor for her complaint. It was pointed out that the premise of her alleged aggravating factor was wrong, she eats bacon, clearly, which she ordered, which is, and is universally accepted as being the cured meat from a pig. And, secondly, it wasn't even black pudding, but a bit of burned bread.

But, this is MN, so a vocal and determined minority limber up for their mental gymnastics. I think we've had the set here:

Learning difficulties
Dementia
Religion
Culture
Some obscure vegetarian replacement foods, facon etc.

Can someone not just be daft and rude, and can we not have a giggle about it? No one is suggesting a front page with her face on it with the headline "Britain's thickest woman" or indeed tracking her down in order to ridicule her.

BlackForestCake · 15/11/2022 16:51

Which religions allow you to eat pork, but not blood? Genuine question.

ErrolTheDragon · 15/11/2022 16:52

That veggie 'black pudding' seems to be seasoned slices of porridge coloured with carbon black. Yum....

I answered that upthread, Jehovahs Witnesses. Don't know of any others so it's religion singular afaik.

IveDroppedMiBiscuitInMiBrew · 15/11/2022 16:56

🤣🤣🤣 I don't know what's funnier the woman in the cafe who has just found out that bacon is pig or the daft people on this thread defending her stupidity 😆. "Maybe she thought it was vegan bacon" amazing.

Yep. I'm specifically thinking of Jehovah's Witnesses too. I've got plenty of them in my family, and they don't eat blood (the same reasoning is behind why they don't receive blood transfusions).

Strokethefurrywall · 15/11/2022 17:01

Exactly right @IveDroppedMiBiscuitInMiBrew

This is truly the thread that keeps giving. Batshittery all over the shop!

I'm sure a latte used to be ristretto at the bottom at one time and not a tepid, feeble coffee milkshake. I like hot milk in my coffee sometimes but I still want that Oh Fuck Yeah Coffee hit.

Well if we’re going to be really pedantic, latte just means milk in Italian.

My dad always chunders about how a ‘latte’ is what he always called ‘milk with a dash’ - the dash being Camp Coffee! Grin

Whalesong · 15/11/2022 17:05

Lol! I'm in a group for people who love Greece and a young man posted asking for tips of vegan food. He said in the past he's mostly subsisted on chips drenched in mayonnaise. People thought he was joking, but he kept insisting mayonnaise was vegan. He swore it doesn't contain eggs 😂He said he'd been vegan for 12 years and it was his staple food at home and abroad 😂
