In a cafe, and a woman has just complained (funny)

She'd ordered a bacon sandwich and it's just been delivered to the table. She's now moaning because her bacon sandwich has a tiny crumb of black pudding on it. And she doesn't eat pork.

I feel for the poor staff having to explain which animal bacon comes from 😬

(And no, there's no vegan bacon on the menu so not a mix up!)

Can someone not just be daft and rude

That's just the point - she wasn't rude. I have no problem with ridiculing people who are rude and entitled. But I do have a problem with ridiculing people purely because they are 'daft' as you put it.

She obviously kicked up a fuss, otherwise it wouldn’t have taken most of the staff to convince her bacon is pork.

Well I feel a little dumb now, as a life long veggie (because Im allergic to a protein in most meats) I for some reason always though Black Pudding was made from sheep (sheep stomach with blood and rice I thought).

Now I feel like 9 pages of people are laughing at me for not knowing my breeds of meat lol.

This varies. Where I live, black puddings are traditionally made from sheeps blood, fat, oatmeal, flour and spices, and sheep's stomach. But the ones you buy in shops are more likely to be made from pork and often use synthetic casings.

I got an offer to teach me how to make them one year, and we got as far as washing out the sheep's stomach, but no further. The 1st January in Scotland is not a good day for black pudding making!

I'm sorry for your father but let's not pretend dementia is at play here.

But, we don't know that. People can suffer from dementia at any age. We don't know why she didn't know what bacon was made of.

You are laughing at someone who is either weaker than, or different from you. There is no excuse for that.

At some point in your life, perhaps you will be in a weak position, and someone will ridicule you without mercy, and then you might appreciate what I am talking about.

CopOut27 · 15/11/2022 12:42

Sorry but this is nonsense MN whataboutery. People from different cultures are not stupid and it’s universally understood bacon is a pig product which is why other ‘types’ of bacon have additional words v clearly in front of them. In your example “vegan” or “turkey”.

Its not about being stupid or not @copout27 I had a Moroccan Muslim friend who ate bacon sarnies in the U.K. and when I quizzed him he was mortified that it wasn’t turkey as he’d never come across pork bacon before. Why would he? He’d grown up in Morocco where everywhere sells bacon but it’s obviously not pork. It’s not called ‘turkey bacon’ in morocco to differentiate it as there is no pork bacon. Just like it’s not called pork bacon here. He made a very easy mistake.

@Harrysnippleno3 I don't look stupid - I am a world wide Nomad with experience of other cultures (also white, middle aged, British, AND DON'T EAT PORK) Something that a lot of people on this thread don't understand.

I also don't assume bacon is from pig only, because quite often it isn't.

Good grief we’ve got another one. At least this one isn’t going on about religion.

Untitledsquatboulder · 15/11/2022 17:14

WowserBear · 15/11/2022 16:04

Bacon can be made of several things: Pork, Beef, Turkey, Fake Meat.

It's astounding to read in this day and age that people still make the assumption that middle aged, white, British women cannot be Muslim, Jewish, or many other religions. Heck, even some Christian strands don't eat pork.

In the UK, if it says "bacon" it's pork unless otherwise specified. If its important to you, you need to check.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 15/11/2022 17:14

Those of you pulling cats bum faces at ‘maybe she has dementia’ or whatever - she wasn’t alone, was she? She was with a male companion, presumably husband, who would have smoothed over the situation with the staff if this was the case.

So my money’s on a daft woman, or maybe a woman having a daft moment, who genuinely thought bacon wasn’t from a pig.

Incidentally, does this remind anyone of the infamous ‘chicken of the sea’ Jessica Simpson incident?!

TalkisChips · 15/11/2022 17:15

Never known a greasy spoon serve anything other than bacon.

AutumnCrow · 15/11/2022 17:17

brighterthanthemoon · 15/11/2022 15:35

Is black pudding in the scriptures?

Yup, loosely speaking, in דְּבָרִים and וַיִּקְרָא

Tends not to come into play a lot in local cafés though unless you're in, say, west Jerusalem.

... and the OP did in fact say the husband went to the counter on her behalf which would support the idea that she is vulnerable in some way; adult women wouldn't normally send their husbands up to negotiate for them in a cafe.

How do you get through life what if-ing so much? It must be exhausting.

Do you not think if she had an issue her husband might have said something?

If this were me, I’d Google it, realise I was wrong, apologise and leave, never to return. I’d tell me friend in a omg I’m such a fool you will never believe what happened to me way. Or do we have to assume the woman couldn’t possibly have access to a smart phone as well.

WowserBear · 15/11/2022 17:20

Oh come on, everyone must have seen this. Getting the menz involved is a common tactic with unreasonable people.

These stretches you are making in 6our mental gymnastics are quite impressive. I hope you do well in your GCSEs

By the same token, adult British women wouldn't normally order a bacon butty if they didn't eat pork. Nor would they double down once given the facts, & keep kicking up a stink about it.

As I've just said, the husband did indeed take over the conversation, according to the OP.

As for 'what if-ing' - that isn't the gotcha you think it is. There's nothing wrong with looking beyond the surface of a situation, not making assumptions, especially not when those assumptions are unkind.

Why don't you try what-if-ing sometime? - it can be a useful way of putting yourself in the other person's shoes, and avoiding being spiteful/judgemental.

WiddlinDiddlin · 15/11/2022 17:26

Randomly.. in Kazakhstan, where the majority are Muslim and the meat eaten is typically horse, sheep and cow, the 'bacon' is still listed as 'horse bacon/beef bacon/sheep bacon'...

In a country where almost no one eats pork at all!

Herejustforthisone · 15/11/2022 17:26

Refrosty · 15/11/2022 17:00

Yep. I'm specifically thinking of Jehovah's Witnesses too. I've got plenty of them in my family, and they don't eat blood (the same reasoning is behind why they don't receive blood transfusions).

But she said she didn’t eat pork, not that she didn’t eat blood.

PuppyMonkey · 15/11/2022 17:28

I think we should all go to any cafe tomorrow and order bacon sandwiches but first ask “what is the bacon made from?”

Post the answer back in this thread…

Unless it’s been deleted by then or anything.

A more accurate term than 'making stretches in mental gymnastics' would be 'reading the thread'.

I didn’t see it at as a gotcha. The levels you are going to are quite mad. Of course I don’t take every situation at face value but I also don’t sit and think of every possible scenario because that is absurd.
