In a cafe, and a woman has just complained (funny)

She'd ordered a bacon sandwich and it's just been delivered to the table. She's now moaning because her bacon sandwich has a tiny crumb of black pudding on it. And she doesn't eat pork.

I feel for the poor staff having to explain which animal bacon comes from 😬

(And no, there's no vegan bacon on the menu so not a mix up!)

Bacon can be made of several things: Pork, Beef, Turkey, Fake Meat.

It's astounding to read in this day and age that people still make the assumption that middle aged, white, British women cannot be Muslim, Jewish, or many other religions. Heck, even some Christian strands don't eat pork.

Exactly.
There are people who eat meat but don't do organs I am one of them.
Steak yummy - leg yummy - etc.

Kidneys - 😱 liver - 😱 intestines - 😱

Not 👏the 👏same👏thing 👏

If you said I don’t want haggis BECAUSE I don’t eat sheep, whilst tucking into a lamb chop, that would be the same thing.

Bollocks. Bacon is pork.

Ooops, I meant to berate Undisclosedblackpudding. Not the innocent Pasc611.

And I couldn't complete the simple sentence "You've traumatised everyone who thought chickens were made from chick peas."

OK, I'll stick to reading, not writing from here on! (And petition Justine for an edit option)

Bacon on any menu is pork unless in halal/kosher place or specified otherwise.

Yes but if it was that important to you, wouldn’t you clarify knowing there was all the different types. Why would you just assume it was the right type?

When someone is a killjoy we call them a nuance.

Eh?

QuestionableMouse · 15/11/2022 16:07

Pasc611 · 15/11/2022 15:28

What's funny about that? It's an easy way to explain what you don't eat and the term has been around for decades.

Because he was quite happy eating chicken but not bacon. Both have faces, last time I checked.

@Harrysnippleno3 Not nonsense at all - how narrow minded of you - bacon does not have to be pork. In many countries it isn't.

no it cant.

I cant eat pork, I like quorn 'bacon' but many people have heard my confused muesing on why the fuck they call it bacon... its a rectangle of bring pink slime ffs, nice but in no way 'cured meat from the back or sides of a pig' which is the actually dictionary definition of bacon.

Useyourfork · 15/11/2022 16:09

I really hope that the lady in the cafe ( hopefully now fully aware of the origins of bacon) has found this thread and can see the funny side.
I wish the story would have ended in the OP coming clean to her in the cafe before they each went their separate ways.

WowserBear · 15/11/2022 16:10

@Flapjackquack - I personally would check, but for all we know this place used to serve beef/turkey bacon.

@BosaNova - no it's really not always, in many countries it's beef / turkey - even large hotel chains for instance are likely to serve a non-pork bacon variety at breakfast buffets.

The UK is not the centre of the World.

Now you've done it, Pasc611. You've traumatised everyone who thought they were chickens were made from chick peas.

You mean they're not? 😱
Chick peas don't have faces.
But they are not what chickens are made of? What the dickens is a chicken then? An ANIMAL? 😂

The actual work bacon MEANS pork.

Thats like saying beer (definition: a an alcoholic drink made from yeast-fermented malt flavoured with hops) isn't alcoholic just because a few brands specifically tried to replicate it in non alcoholic form.

WowserBear · 15/11/2022 16:12

@mam0918 Yes, yes it can. As many people on this thread have pointed out.

Yes, but in Britain, it’s pork as standard. Everything else is specified, unless the cafe says “Vegan Café”, in which case you can probably make some assumptions. In a greasy spoon though...
Regardless of religion, a British person in Britain is generally aware that bacon served in Britain is pork.

RampantIvy · 15/11/2022 16:12

AnApparitionQuipped · 15/11/2022 12:37

Because people have different cultural understandings of things. Should we really be sneering at people who come from different cultural backgrounds? If 'bacon' to this woman means turkey bacon or vegan bacon, there's probably a good reason for that.

I think it is safe to assume, unless you have just landed on these shores, that a bacon sandwich in a greasy spoon will be made from bacon from a pig.

If you go into any supermarket and visit the bacon section there might be one or two types of turkey bacon among all the bacon from pigs. That should tell you that turkey bacon isn't widely bought or eaten in this country.

Also, if you don't eat pork isn't the onus on the customer to ask if the bacon comes from a pig or if they sell turkey bacon?

Narrow minded?

You realise how stupid you look?

WowserBear · 15/11/2022 16:14

@Harrysnippleno3 I don't look stupid - I am a world wide Nomad with experience of other cultures (also white, middle aged, British, AND DON'T EAT PORK) Something that a lot of people on this thread don't understand.

I also don't assume bacon is from pig only, because quite often it isn't.

Go argue with the dictionary about how they are incorrect then because you say so lol.

Paracetamol · 15/11/2022 16:15

How were you close enough to see the "tiny" piece of black pudding on her plate but too far away to make out what they were saying?

And if you couldn't make out what they were saying how do you know the woman had a local dialect?

AnApparitionQuipped · 15/11/2022 16:16

This thread seems to have descended into people insulting one another. I suppose, given the spite of its premise, that isn't altogether surprising.

If it's not pork it's not bacon. Because bacon is made from pork. If it's not made from pork, it's something else.

Of course a middle aged, white, British woman can be Muslim. I have one in my extended family. She doesn't eat pork and she knows that bacon is made from pork, so guess what, she doesn't eat bacon.

She also knows that she needs to be careful with all manner of foodstuffs because of gelatine in sweets and pork fat in some cakes/pies/biscuits etc, although that's a lot rarer than it used to be.

Can anyone else remember that some biscuits used to have Arabic writing on the packet and/or the words that they do or do not contain 'pig fat'?

You don't see that any more. I wonder if it's because they're generally made from vegetable fats now?
