In a cafe, and a woman has just complained (funny)

She'd ordered a bacon sandwich and it's just been delivered to the table. She's now moaning because her bacon sandwich has a tiny crumb of black pudding on it. And she doesn't eat pork.

I feel for the poor staff having to explain which animal bacon comes from 😬

(And no, there's no vegan bacon on the menu so not a mix up!)

There are people who don't eat pig's blood (black pudding) but who do eat pig products.

Love this thread!!

As a child I used to think that a cheese burger is vegetarian and only has cheese. I used to eat meat back then but my mum didn't and I remember how surprised both of us were when the cheeseburger had well a burger in it...

I only realised that parmesan wasn't vegetarian about a year ago or so. I'd been happily eating it all my life.

I remember many conversations when I was younger and from time to time dappled with being vegetarian which went like this:

Me: do you have any vegetarian dishes?
Other person: yes, loads. Do you eat chicken?
Me: No. I'm a vegetarian. I don't eat any meat.
OP: Oh
OP: Do you eat fish?
Me: No.
OP: ...

This reminds me of the time my eldest was a baby (I’m going back 26+ years)
wed stopped off at a cafe, that we’d never been to before-nice enough place
we ordered an ice cream sundae with ‘hot fudge’ topping
babies father sent it back as the hot fudge topping was cold

i couldn’t be with someone that thick and broke up with him not long after

ill never forget the pitiful look the owner gave me as we left

hot fudge is suppose to be hot... hes definately not the one being 'thick' in that situation, I would say the cafe where.

If its cold it cannot be HOT fudge sauce, just fudge sauce.

I'm intrigued....what does he end up with?

A white coffee with a smidge of foam and an eye roll from the barista in our local Costa.

He needs to order a cortado instead I think. Or a flat white.

On a side note he is from a country where bacon is made from Turkey as pork is not allowed. He's knew from when he arrived in the uk that our bacon is pig and his friends and family also know this.

MatronicO6 · 15/11/2022 14:13

Regarding the hot fudge sauce debate, I was also under the impression that it should be served warm. Got a friend who is a very avid baker and at her child's recent birthday was tasked with heating the homemade fudge sauce, it was pretty solid when cold.

She's a middle aged white woman with a local accent. I don't think it's a case of a cultural mix up.

😁

I would also expect hot fudge sauce to be hot. Why would it be cold? It's not infused with hot chilli sauce or anything. Proper hot fudge sauce is lovely on ice cream.

I would expect the hot fudge sauce to be hot too, even on ice cream, when we lived in Germany one of my favourite puds was Eis und Heiss, ice cream with hot raspberries or cherries bliss.

I worked with a Jewish woman years ago. Her husband kept kosher but would also eat spare ribs!
She thought he assumed they were beef and wasn't going to correct him

I'm Jewish, brought up kosher, and believe me, there is a lot of "don't ask, don't tell" among those of us who are not quite that devout Wink
Several of my Muslim friends operate similar policies.

Disclaimer: I'm sure there are lots of very good well-behaved Jews or Muslims who would never knowingly eat treif/haram. But there are lots like me too Grin

However, none of us, ever, would think that bacon meant anything other than pig meat, unless it was very clearly indicated as such. We may be 'culturally other', but contrary to what @AnApparitionQuipped seems to think, we're not idiots.

Tbf though McDonalds is annoying in that they don't have a plain Quarterpounder - it's a Quarterpounder with Cheese. I hate cheese, so have to remove it from the order before placing the order. Despite it clearly being ordered without cheese & even having a sticker on it saying No Cheese - it still often comes with cheese & promptly gets sent back.
So I have to order a Quarterpounder with Cheese Without Cheese Confused

But at least I know bacon comes from a 🐷!

How odd. Mcdonald's in the US has always had a plain (no cheese) quarter pounder listed on the menu right next to the QP with cheese.

Monkey2001 · 15/11/2022 14:18

On the burger talk, I remember when the family went somewhere with my elderly granny (in the 80's) and she ordered a Hamburger, thinking it would be ham.

Loving this thread, I am sure it will be picked up by the Daily Mail today.

Oh please! We're all cringing at this crass virtue signalling on behalf of the white middle aged English woman.

You must be kind...people from other cultures (like my own family) simply don't understand things. They aren't to be expected to know basic things like that bacon comes from pigs.

The virtue signalling is so patronising!

Black pudding has pig's blood. Bacon is not the blood.

QuestionableMouse · 15/11/2022 14:20

I'll be gutted if it does - I got £60 off them a few years ago for using something I posted along with the photo without permission.

Maybe I should add a pic just in case!

@fairgame84 why doesn't he just order a flat white? As that's what he ends up with. Or even a latte with minimal foam?

In a cafe, and a woman has just complained (funny)
starfishmummy · 15/11/2022 14:23

The staff member seems a bit exasperated and just went "but it all comes from a pig my love!" and doesn't quite seem to know what to do next.

It might all be pig, but I eat bacon and pork but I don't like black pudding!

Yes I have tried it and if it was just a small speck I'd just pick it off and give it to dh who likes it. If it was a slice or two then I'd expect a new sandwich.

Flapjackquack · 15/11/2022 14:23

Then she would have said I don’t eat pig’s blood not I don’t eat pork!

PaidthepiperTuneismine · 15/11/2022 14:23
  1. Conclusions
In this paper, we have discussed two opposing religious ideological concepts, on which two cultural civilizations are based. One culture is relaxed about the consumption of pork and blood as a food (and its members consume food such as black puddings, frankfurters and hot dogs). The other cultures are based on a religious ideology that strongly prohibits the consumption of pork and of blood as a food: “He hath only forbidden you dead meat, and blood, and the flesh of swine, and that on which any other name hath been invoked besides that of Allah. For Allah is Oft-forgiving Most Merciful” (Surah the Cow 2: 173) and “Only be steadfast in not eating the blood; for the blood is the life; and thou shalt not eat the life with the flesh” (The Bible, Deuteronomy Chapter 12: 23 דְּבָרִים).

Oh no, this is very upsetting. A flat white isn’t the same size as a latte!!

PaidthepiperTuneismine · 15/11/2022 14:19

Black pudding has pig's blood. Bacon is not the blood.

Yes, we know this. But the issue is that she didn't want the black pudding as she didn't eat pork....while ordering a bacon sandwich.

What bit are you not getting?

One of my Christmas things is sticky toffee puddings which I make and freeze then make the toffee sauce the day before and it's in a pan ready to be reheated. A couple of years ago I came very close to pouring it into the gravy boat, very similar colours.
