In a cafe, and a woman has just complained (funny)

She'd ordered a bacon sandwich and it's just been delivered to the table. She's now moaning because her bacon sandwich has a tiny crumb of black pudding on it. And she doesn't eat pork.

I feel for the poor staff having to explain which animal bacon comes from 😬

(And no, there's no vegan bacon on the menu so not a mix up!)

Well, this thread is annoying me - everyone jumping on to sneer at some poor woman - if it isn't religious/cultural, she might have learning difficulties - or, shock horror - simply not be as clever as the average Mumsnetter.

My son has learning difficulties, are you making fun of them? Even he knows that bacon comes from pork. This is just pure stupidity!! Just because she's stupid that doesn't mean she has learning difficulties.

MavisChunch29 · 15/11/2022 14:25

I'm sure a latte used to be ristretto at the bottom at one time and not a tepid, feeble coffee milkshake. I like hot milk in my coffee sometimes but I still want that Oh Fuck Yeah Coffee hit.

Labnehi · 15/11/2022 14:24

Yes, we know this. But the issue is that she didn't want the black pudding as she didn't eat pork....while ordering a bacon sandwich.

What bit are you not getting?

She wanted the bacon sandwich. She didn't want the pig's blood (black pudding). It's not that difficult to understand.

eggandonion · 15/11/2022 14:25

My former brother in law is from a mixed Jewish and Muslim background, he doesn't eat pork. Or other pig based products.
My mother in law, who is a pain in the arse, tried to force feed him bacon because it isn't pork.

  1. Conclusions
In this paper, we have discussed two opposing religious ideological concepts, on which two cultural civilizations are based. One culture is relaxed about the consumption of pork and blood as a food (and its members consume food such as black puddings, frankfurters and hot dogs). The other cultures are based on a religious ideology that strongly prohibits the consumption of pork and of blood as a food: “He hath only forbidden you dead meat, and blood, and the flesh of swine, and that on which any other name hath been invoked besides that of Allah. For Allah is Oft-forgiving Most Merciful” (Surah the Cow 2: 173) and “Only be steadfast in not eating the blood; for the blood is the life; and thou shalt not eat the life with the flesh” (The Bible, Deuteronomy Chapter 12: 23 דְּבָרִים).

Completely irrelevant. Maybe you should go back to the start of the thread?

What are you talking about? That says those that eat pork and blood and those than don’t eat pork and blood. Not those that eat pork but not blood but call blood pork and don’t think bacon is pork.

I'm Jewish, brought up kosher, and believe me, there is a lot of "don't ask, don't tell" among those of us who are not quite that devout Wink
Several of my Muslim friends operate similar policies.

Disclaimer: I'm sure there are lots of very good well-behaved Jews or Muslims who would never knowingly eat treif/haram. But there are lots like me too Grin

However, none of us, ever, would think that bacon meant anything other than pig meat, unless it was very clearly indicated as such. We may be 'culturally other', but contrary to what @AnApparitionQuipped seems to think, we're not idiots.

But can you not understand that the experiences/frames of reference used by you and your circle of friends, family and acquaintances, might not be the same as those of others outside your own circle?

PaidthepiperTuneismine · 15/11/2022 14:27

Look. Laugh as you wish, but that is what some religions teach. Pork ok. Black pudding not ok.

Clearly it is, for you. The point is that she didn't want any pork in her sandwich, and was upset about the black pudding.

Do you need a diagram? We could find a small child and some crayons?

It's not a religious question though.

You're as wrong as you are patronising.

Harrysnippleno3 · 15/11/2022 14:28

She wanted the bacon sandwich. She didn't want the pig's blood (black pudding). It's not that difficult to understand.

She complained about the non black pudding because she does not eat pork. Bacon is pork.

shinynewapple22 · 15/11/2022 14:28

@AnApparitionQuipped
For goodness sake! She doesn't eat pork - probably for cultural/religious reasons - in her world 'bacon' is a non pork product - so that makes her 'stupid'?

Come off it - people who don't eat pork for whatever reason are very clear that, whilst they may eat Turkey bacon or vegan bacon, whilst outside of a cafe which they know personally would only serve these versions for cultural reasons - they would always double check what they are getting .

You're assuming that she didn't know that the bacon was pork (from a swine).

Unless she's an alien of limited intelligence, she will know the animal that pork comes from. The issue will have been pig's blood.

PaidthepiperTuneismine · 15/11/2022 14:27

But that’s not what your quotes say? I don’t know any religion that says pork ok but pork blood not. But yes not at all relevant here.

GloomyDarkness · 15/11/2022 14:30

QuestionableMouse · 15/11/2022 13:00

IT'S NOT BLACK PUDDING!

Second worker has just pointed out that the crumb of black pudding is actually a burned bit of her bun!

I'm too far away to tell - it just looks like a little black lump to me.

Still no resolution on the bacon is a pork product front as far as I can tell.

It apparently wasn't black pudding at all but a burned bit of bun.

Harrysnippleno3 · 15/11/2022 14:30

The issue will have been pig's blood.

Even though it said quite clearly the in the OP...

And she doesn't eat pork.

Pork is the issue. She doesn't eat pork.

Labnehi · 15/11/2022 14:30

But can you not understand that the experiences/frames of reference used by you and your circle of friends, family and acquaintances, might not be the same as those of others outside your own circle?

No. People who don't eat things like pork for religious or cultural reasons know better than anyone what pork is and where they might find it.

You assuming that someone of a religion or culture that doesn't eat pork won't know what bacon is offensive, patronising, and kinda racist.

Surely you are not seriously still trying to suggest that this person (described by the OP as white British) comes from an entire culture of people who don't know that bacon comes from pigs?

You're not really, are you?!

No - she wanted the bacon sandwich, got cross about the black pud, and then claimed not to know that bacon was from pigs and THAT was the bit that all the fuss was about. It moved on from the black pudding to - no one ever told me bacon was pig. Read it again.

Choconut · 15/11/2022 14:30

God I love bacon.

MajorCarolDanvers · 15/11/2022 14:31

whack-a-mole for tiresome, patronising wokerati

Thank you that is brilliant 😂

WiddlinDiddlin · 15/11/2022 14:31

If the issue is the pigs blood then surely you say 'I don't eat blood products'.

I mean I would say 'I don't LIKE black pudding, eugh'.. because I don't. But then, I would have just picked it off and probably in the process would have discovered it was a burnt bit of bun and not black pudding anyway...

But I am (generally!) not a twat.
