I just heard on the radio. Don't know what others think but I used to love their brightly coloured pyjamas.

I’m so sad. You’d all hate me. I wear striped floral Bretons all the time. Have the coats and wellies. I used to buy joules at country fairs and at the feed merchant. Still got my sweatshirts from 20 years ago, they are indestructible. It used to be much better quality I agree.

Great to know I look frumpy, old and dated!! I live in the countryside and everyone wears joules sweatshirts!

@DobbyTheHouseElk we,don’t all dress like that in the countryside thanks very much!

The shop in Winchester closed a few months back, I thought things might not be going well when that happened. Seems like fashion has moved on and it's all athleisure and grunge now.

True. Almost everyone seems to be walking around in gym gear these days.

Brigante9 · 14/11/2022 17:48

I have their riding wear, polos, sweatshirts, it was all the rage when I started riding. I never see that section of their clothing anymore. I think it’s great quality, but haven’t bought anything recently so couldn’t say if it’s deteriorated. I’m sad they’ve got administrators in, it was iconic in riding circles when I was younger.

StPaulandTheBrokenBones · 14/11/2022 17:52

I’ve just bought a dressing gown from Joules with bumble bees on it. Not my usual thing but I just thought it was cheerful and keeps me warm when I don’t want to put the heating on. It’s like wearing a bloody sleeping bag, it’s so thick and warm. So I was quite impressed with the quality. First time I’ve bought anything from there.

Tansytea · 14/11/2022 18:20

Very sad for the people working there, but it was a crowded market. There is Boden, Cath Kidson and Sea salt all doing very similar clothes, and Joules was a bit more out there and bright than the others. I personally do not have anything from there, and I surely must be in their demographic, but it was just too clunky looking, nothing elegant, not aspirational, but quite expensive for what it was.

Deguster · 14/11/2022 18:47

I have a Joules tweed jacket that I bought second hand 15 years ago and it will outlive me and everyone I love, even if it does smell of wet dog these days. Pretty much everything I’ve ordered in the last 3 years (not much) has been returned because of poor quality.

SanpellegrinoIsToryFanta · 14/11/2022 19:02

I love most of their plainer things. I have 5 of their coats and they still look as good as new. Will be disappointed if I can't shop there anymore ☹️

Scottsy100 · 14/11/2022 19:03

Oh no where will people buy their official Mumsnet Uniform now 🤣🤣🤣

That joke’s been done in about 15 different ways already.

What! I've waiting on an order and I've bought several items in more than one size for my girls. Am I going to bed left with it all? I assume I won't be able to return for refund if they are in administration.

Bastards just put on a big Black Friday sale last week so no doubt lots of folk in same situation as me.

Happened to me when ‘Ness’ went bust, leaving me with various pure 100% wool pinafore dresses, none of which fit...a very expensive mistake at over £100 each. ☹️

SomeChickensAreJustTooBig · 14/11/2022 19:11

Crikey! They were so popular!

EllaPaella · 14/11/2022 19:14

The jeans were always good quality and I've had a few things from Joules over the years that I've really loved and lasted well.
Nothing is ever going to be to everyone's taste and the scoffing at other people's choices gets tiresome and childish, so bored of the 'it's so frumpy only my 70 year old granny would wear it' shite.
It is a shame to see the collapse of yet another brand who were once had shops on many a high street.

Bunnycat101 · 14/11/2022 19:16

I’m quite sad actually as I have really liked their summer dresses. Having something that is actually cotton and not polyester seems a challenge so they filled that gap for me. Surely though not every brand can cater for the 21 year old and teens. There is nothing wrong with wanting something to do the school run in etc.

DarkShade · 14/11/2022 19:35

I love joules. At least there might be some juicy sales before it all goes.

Adipose · 14/11/2022 19:36

We live in the town where Joules was founded, they have only just completed their new absolutely massive headquarters here, it took years to build, so to hear they've gone in to administration is awful. A lot of jobs will be lost in the town now, including quite a few of my friends and acquaintances. Such a shame. I wonder what they'll do with the building? It's very bespoke, can't imagine what will end up there. Must have cost millions to build 😬

Mumteedum · 14/11/2022 19:40

Bum. I ordered something on Saturday. Wonder if it arrives! I would not have bought it full price. It was massively reduced in sale.

I have two jackets from joules from years ago but I think their brand lost its way. Bit frumpy and repetitive generally.

Anon778833 · 14/11/2022 20:08

Frugi might go. I had an email for 40% off party wear.

Frugi quality has deteriorated a lot in the last couple of years. They've started selling in big shops and seem to have lost some of their ethics. So I wouldn't be surprised.

Gr33ngr33ngr4ss · 14/11/2022 20:34

I'm trying to pinpoint when I stopped buying or wanting to buy. I think about 10 years ago, kids were still little, we had a little bit more money than we'd had but weren't really going anywhere out-out. So where I'd previously splashed on a dress, I spent on something reasonably casual but a brand I felt was "nice". And Joules, round here, was fairly unusual back then. And a bit spendier than F&F!

Then the outlets popped up. Then the QVC selling, the Next website thing. And they were EVERYWHERE and my mum had a Harbour and my MIL did and it didn't make them any less nice but I didn't want to wear what everyone else was wearing! And I started going out more. So looked for my own style again

I still have friends who wear a lot of Joules and look great in it.
But I think the overwhelm of it made me want it less - not that it wasn't nice and not that it was "frumpy" because we all wear things differently.

shinynewapple22 · 14/11/2022 20:43

mamabear715 · 14/11/2022 15:07

Then I apologise, @ChristmasisRuined , it came across that way, but I still never wore Joules when I was mucking horses out!

I don't think you have any need to apologise @mamabear715 . There is a lot of ageism on here - but @ChristmasisRuined actually telling you that you are too old to wear a brand is way out of order . There have been some posters upset on here by comments that joules is perceived to be frumpy - but telling a poster they are too old for a brand takes ageism to another level .

LolaSmiles · 14/11/2022 20:49

Frugi seem to be going into sale very quickly with endless drops at the moment. With a drop in quality and high price hikes it feels a very different company now than it used to be. Some of their recent maternity stuff could easily have come from any high street or supermarket shop and looked quite cheap.

They seem to be doing the same path as Joules: start off slightly pricey but good quality, then end up compromising quality and style whilst hiking prices, start getting stocked at lots of big retailers and always having 10% off here and there, and going into sale regularly.

I agree, why do people generalise. I’m a country girl, though currently live on the very outskirts of a city. Not all country people live in Midsummer. I don’t know anyone who wears Joules from my background, a Breton top, yes, with flowers? Fuck no.

Yes Frugi are always having an UP to sale.

LadyMarmaladeAtkins · 14/11/2022 21:15

I am very sad for all those working in the business who are going to lose their jobs or who have put their money in and will lose that (if indeed they will - I think I remember reading that when Orla Kiely went bust she and her husband had taken large amounts of money out for at least 4 years beforehand). Was it still owned by the original proprietors or had they sold to venture capitalists? Likewise anyone in the supply chain who will lose out. But I can't stand Joules as a brand so I'm not sorry to see it go. Overpriced even before the latest Cost of Living crisis bit, and none of it ever fit me shapewise, designs a bit twee and samey. I would suggest that enough of the rest of the population agreed as to make the business non-viable.
