Apologies that the prior thread filled up before I could create this one. Hopefully everyone will find it. Lurkers are of course welcome to unlurk.

@ZZTopGuitarSolo

That sounds very lovely- especially the bit about drinking Gluhwein! And who doesn't like a Christmas market!

Sadly my room is too small and I live alone but I love al the Christmas decorations and table decorations.

MissConductUS · 28/11/2022 15:48

Weclome, @JamSandle, and thanks for sharing your COL payment news. I wish someone would give me a COL payment.

ZZ, that sounds like a lovely walkabout. I haven't been to Chicago in 20 years. You have a DD in uni there, correct? I agree, the four-day break is really needed by this point in the fall.

In the office we have an 11 l Glühwein cooker, which gets Glühwein (high quality) ready for 17h. We have a designated engineer for the job. 😀Only I never liked Glühwein.

Yes, Miss it is just ordinary potatoes + a bit of olive oil. It is important for DS (AS) that they look and taste exactly like the bought ones.

I just made a simple Kirsi for DH, it turned out well.

thejadefish · 28/11/2022 19:42

Just stumbled across this thread. Been in our house 5 years, previous owner painted the banister on the stairs orange which we haven't got round to changing. Am on maternity leave and baby kindly decided to nap so I've been stripping off the orange paint. I wanted to varnish it to show the wood underneath but there are screws in the middle holding it on so will probably paint it white to match the walls. There were more layers than I was expecting, it'll probably take a few days!

MissConductUS · 28/11/2022 20:23

Welcome, @thejadefish, and thanks for sharing your decorating and mat leave news. Is the baby your first?

Orange paint for a banister? Was the previous owner colorblind?

If you want the wood to show through, you can buy a small can of wood-colored putty to cover the heads of the screws.

thejadefish · 28/11/2022 20:45

Thank you @MissConductUS no it's my second

I think the orange was to match the wallpaper (which was pale green with orange flowers on it - the walls are just painted now). When we bought the house the internal doors had also been painted orange. I painted over those a while ago so its just the banister left to do. It was a look, I'll grant them that!

Thank you for the suggestion I'll give it a go 😃

sproutsandparsnips · 28/11/2022 21:57

Prok that sounds amazing! I want one!
I am going away overnight tomorrow for a conference. This is something I have not had the opportunity to do in all my 25 year career so I am strangely excited. We leave tomorrow at 7 and my colleagues are coming from west to my house and I will drive to Cardiff.
We have got the boxes of decorations from the roof but not yet got round to putting them up so the boxes are cluttering up the hall.

mathanxiety · 29/11/2022 03:48

Waves at ZZ from the general area.
Sounds like you had a good time. It's always nice downtown after they turn on the Christmas lights and before the bitter cold sets in.

thejadefish your orange banister reminds me of the pillar box red woodwork in my old house before I painted it all white. When the sun shone in through the west facing windows the sitting room was bathed in an apricot hued light. The previous owners got their inspiration from a decor magazine that we found in the basement along with a lot of other junk when we moved in.

What is a Kirsi, Prok?

Lemonsandlemonade · 29/11/2022 05:34

Enjoy the conference sprouts. I just had a moment then when I realised the last time I went to Cardiff was the morning my Dad had passed away. I haven’t been since. Think I need to rectify that one.

The jade fish wow orange and then orange and green sounds different 😂.

MissC is the COL as bad in the US? Inflation rate is lower I believe. They said that the mortgage rate could double next year in UK. Luckily we fixed for 5 years at a very low rate.

Lemonsandlemonade · 29/11/2022 05:46

Aggh posted too soon.

DS is going through a very rough sleep period. He goes down fine but then wakes up . He is on the go all day and is certainly tired by the time he goes to bed. He then wakes up screaming usually about midnight but will self settle then ok. Last night he was down at 6:45 then at 8 was awake then at 12 and has stirred now at 5. I hope it’s just a phase but it’s bothering me as for last 12 Months he has slept in his cot al night constantly

Have job interview next week. I’m not sure to tell work or not but I think I should.

HelenaJustina · 29/11/2022 06:37

Congratulations on the interview lemons! Everything crossed for you!

I did 8am-6pm at work yesterday and am doing the same again today… am tired already!

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 29/11/2022 07:10

Math I have used the wrong letters for the i sound, the word is Turkish.
It is a type of bulgur salad - multiple recipes are around. If I want to impress people I use the recipe of a work mates mum 😀I am sure it exists in the UK, and is only called differently.
example

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 29/11/2022 07:12

Oh and regarding the orange bannister
Do you remember the 70ties? 😀

mathanxiety · 29/11/2022 18:19

Many thanks for the recipe, Prok!

It looks exactly like the bulgur salad DS' exGF made. It's too late for me to ask her how to make it, so I'm glad to have your link.

mathanxiety · 29/11/2022 18:24

Lemons good luck with your interview.
I would tell your current employer only if you get an offer.

Most Americans have 30 year fixed rate mortgages, so the rising rates don't affect people who already have a mortgage. New buyers are looking at higher rates.

Silkierabbit · 29/11/2022 19:37

Lemons Hope the interview goes well. I agree with Math only tell current employer if you get an offer. How is your DB doing, was it cancer in the end?

We went down to stay in the Holiday Inn again on Sunday night and I swam a mile on Sunday and a mile on Monday and we had dinner and breakfast there. Its very good value for Sunday night and enjoy it. We get swimming pool pretty much to ourselves and there is also a jacuzzi, sauna and stream room.

Saw DS twice. Saturday I have a call to say he has broken his ipad trying to make himself a bathroom door for privacy with a blanket and they add he was also trying to do it with mattress and they have taken it out. Go Sunday pm to give him ipad new one we got and homemade cakes and find him slumped in the bathroom with no furniture at all and his clothes on the floor to the toilet where he is trying to sleep. The CCTV which watches him 24/7 he has covered up with communication cards and a sheet he has put over bathroom door, his education plan is screwed up. Even his mattress is removed. I tell them he wants no CCTV and privacy in bathroom and need some furniture back. Monday visit again and find he is on mattress in the bathroom asleep by a drain and CCTV is on and bathroom door is uncovered. Then today I get a call he's been put in seclusion for refusing to come out of bathroom (its the only place not monitored) and was climbing on sink when they took his mattress away again. Argh. I told them they are breaking human rights laws and if he does not want to be on cctv that is his right and they need to move him back, give him a mattress and cover the CCTV up. After a few hours they did that and he is more settled again. I can see his just games on his ipad all night. That is his only activity in there. There is a meeting on Thursday but current plan is to keep him there for ages then move him elsewhere for further assessment to see if he has psychosis or ocd, they have had a psychiatrist watch him for 2.5 months already. So want to bring him home and they have so far observed neither of those two conditions just autism and anxiety. They are back to waiting for him to speak. Argh, bangs head.

DH is playing piano. Having a veg curry for tea. Will try and catch up on rest of thread later.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 29/11/2022 20:50

Silkie Removing matrasses, no bathroom doors, sleeping on the bathroom floor - what is this - a type of gulag for children? How do they justify this? This cannot be justified by any kind of medical or psychological theory or method.
Why are they allowed to keep him? I am helplessly furious on his behalf.
Do they wait for verbal communication or would writing do?

I am off to chemo nr 5 tomorrow. There is a type of pattern emerging: 3 days chemo then home, 2 'weak' days with hand and swallowing problems, able to eat almost normally on Saturday, feeling almost normal on the following Friday, back to pre-diagnose self on Sunday and back to hospital on Tuesday.
Luckily the wifi is good. I am in the standard 2-bed-room with wc and shower and a large window with a lovely view of the canal. And the TV is headphones only.

Lemonsandlemonade · 29/11/2022 21:25

Silkie it’s a tumour but at this point they don’t think it’s cancer but really they have no idea. It’s incredibly rare and specialist after specialist don’t know what to do or how to help. They just keep regularly monitoring and looking for changes.

Oh Silke how awful. What strikes me are staff trying to build a rapport? My preschool children with ASD will only ever do anything when they are in a regulated state. There is no point trying to communicate and insist on communication with my crew until they are regulated enough to do so. Sounds to me like your DS is clearly communicating in his actions if they only took the time to look and think a bit about what he is trying to say.

Waiting for a child with ASD and anxiety to speak is a pointless mission in my view.

Math/Silkie I think you’re both right hold off for now on job info, think it’s best. Then if I don’t get it it’s no issue. The references I need come from my other employer and two former employers

wow math 30 years fixed rate 😳.

MissConductUS · 30/11/2022 14:09

Lemons, a lot of tumors like that turn out to be benign. Is it in a location where they can't take a biopsy? We also have fixed-rate mortgages with shorter terms. Our last mortgage was fixed rate with a 15 year term. You get a lower interest rate with the shorter term.

Silkie, I don't understand how legally they can confine your son without your consent, given that he doesn't seem a danger to himself or others.

I have a meeting in Philadelphia next Friday, so I'll take the train and return on Saturday morning. Philly is okay, but it's not going to be much fun.

OP posts:
Lemonsandlemonade · 30/11/2022 19:03

Miss C due to location they are finding biopsy hard to do,

Agh I see. We have a five year one at 1.1% which we are grateful for at moment.

have told work I have an appointment on interview day. It’s gone down like a led balloon. Bear in mind I never have time off

Silkierabbit · 30/11/2022 19:39

Prok Hope chemo went OK today and you aren't feeling too bad.

It does feel like a gulag in some ways and apparently mattress are optional items which will be removed if not used as a mattress hence the sleeping on bathroom floor. If a parent did that they would go crazy but its mental health care here. Same as no bathroom doors. We have secretly taken some pictures at least.

MissC They are arguing he would put himself at risk at home "as he attempts to go to school which has a main road by it" though they have now added due to my pressure he has never entered this road. They also argue after 2.5 months they need longer for assessment to check he doesn't have extreme ocd (there is zero chance of this, he is a soap dodger and they are referring to contamination ocd) or to check he does not have psychosis. But they have watched him for 2.5 months on cctv for 24/7 and seen no evidence of that but say they cannot assess this as he is mute so are waiting for him to talk and all explain his thoughts. He has never explained his thoughts. Then there's a whole lot of stupid stuff in there like he was not properly dressed at school - he was in full school uniform and it was 21C and warm. Have no idea where this has even come from, what is a child supposed to wear to school other than school uniform and its from the schools uniform shop. And it says I am housebound apart from chemotherapy. My chemo ended in July and he is 15 not a toddler and I have never been housebound anyway, luckily I have photos and receipts of things but these just seemed to get filed in the bin. Its so annoying though as it stops him getting the support he needs and they falsely have him as dangerous to himself as school to mean it wasn't their issue reported him as absconding from home when they lost him at school in school hours and tracker showed him at school all the time. So now we have the ridiculous statement of child absconding from home to go to school as his dangerous behaviour.

Silkierabbit · 30/11/2022 19:41

Lemons Glad your DB isn't cancer but sorry they can't explain it more. The one good thing about breast cancer is its very common. I have another tumour on adrenals which is not cancer.

Silkierabbit · 30/11/2022 19:45

The staff are nice there Lemons but can go health and safety crazy and don't engage brain, its very tick box mentality. They had not worked out that a child who completely covered CCTV did not want it or that a child who covered his bathroom door wanted a bathroom door. Its not rocket science. And then they just take the covers away and he gets distressed and they segregate him for being distressed. Thankfully they do listen at the hospital but its not a good environment, a room he never leaves with not even a TV in it and no bathroom door and he is watched on CCTV 24/7 including going to toilet, that is via mirror.

halfpasteleven · 01/12/2022 22:05

I'd be going down the legal route silkie...
they have enough assessing done now - he would be happier at home and his happiness matters in all of this. I'm v tired tonight otherwise I'd write more but I really feel they haven't proven anything by assessing him up to now so what would any longer show?

Best wishes Prok.. hope it went well..

The elf is back here - I'm annoyed with him for existing already!

mathanxiety · 01/12/2022 23:53

Silkie I really urge you and DH to find a solicitor who handles this kind of case.
