Hope your DD is on your call tonight MissC her trip sounds great.

We do have muffins here, they are a bit like bread and we have toasted with butter. Don't have them that much. Scones often have fruit in them and are generally served with jam and cream but you can also get plain ones and savoury ones. Non savoury ones are sweet whereas a muffin would be savoury, a bit like alternative to toast. Looking them up I think its muffin. I would imagine they are much better homemade, our shop ones I am not that keen on. I prefer crumpets or hot cross buns.

Happy Mothers Day to all the UK Mums and anyone else its same day for.

DS is home for the weekend and we have just had Mothers Day pancakes which DH made. I wanted to do something with DS before he goes back to hospital. He is very happy with my choice. Silkies are very chatty this morning. DD will go to her boyfriends as its his birthday. Floof went to lie on DS bed last night.

Happy Mother’s Day all Flowers

MissConductUS · 19/03/2023 17:52

Happy Mothers Day to all! We had our weeks ago and I didn't realize it was today for the UK until I started seeing all of the posts from mums who got nothing, not even a card.

I had to run to the supermarket this morning for a few things and saw this huge display of English muffins. As you can see, they come in many varieties. I haven't had one in ages, so I bought a package and made one at home, toasted with a bit of butter.

Here, English muffins are the sort you find McDonald's use for their Egg McMuffin or the base for eggs Benedict. Sort of like a crumpet - which you can also find here. I think our scones are like the English scones and are either round or triangular; sweet or savoury. I'm curious how everyone pronounces the word, scone. Growing up we said, skaahn, like yawn. Now, you rarely hear that pronunciation and scone is said like throne, which might be more English.
Does anyone know what baking powder biscuits are? My dad loved them and I would make them for him when I was a kid. Essentially, they are an unsweetened scone. My dad would like them straight from the oven slathered in butter. 😋💖 I remember they'd turn to rocks when cooled.
I think Americans would simply call them biscuits and typically serve with (white) gravy.
---an interesting thing I learned travelling to the States..."gravy" is white. "Brown gravy" is from pan drippings. And Americans can always tell a Canadian as we always want brown gravy with French fries! Here, gravy is always assumed to be brown. So, we learned to ask for a side of "brown gravy" if we wanted it with fries . 😋🤓
(Have I won the prize for dull conversation today?)

mathanxiety · 19/03/2023 18:20

A scone is a biscuit, more or less.

Happy Mother's Day to all celebrating!

Silkies - there seems to be no chain of command at all. Does incompetent CAMHS doctor call the shots or the Maudsley guy?

Lemonsandlemonade · 19/03/2023 19:25

Happy Mother’s Day to al celebrating it today

Silkierabbit · 19/03/2023 19:50

Math That is something I want to check. It sounded like Russian mafia child psychiatrist from cahms thought he calls all the shots which is quite worrying once he is home. Whilst still under the hospital its the lovely hospital psychiatrist and Maudsley have been called in as Second Opinion doctors but its more like they are leading now as they are the experts in the UK. The Independent Mental Health Advocate shouted at the Russian once he was being ridiculous in the meeting. 😂I thought thank you for saying what I'm thinking. The trouble is hospital one is lovely and kind and cahms one is very matcho and so he dominates when two are together. The matcho side I can deal with, reminds me of when I worked in the City and you just have to be matcho back but the crazy meds regime and the return to hospital at any point plan argh. But we are in negotiation stage. I also may try and get Maudsley to put something in writing re not using the drugs he used before. There was a psychiatrist at cahms before who was quite gentle but then he got moved to autism one when he got diagnosis.

Silkierabbit · 19/03/2023 19:54

I got a Mother's Day card from DS. DH bought it and got DS to sign it. First time he's written since May. Though DH got a super glossy card so it was hard but he tried.

IWanderedLonely · 19/03/2023 20:29

Happy Sunday all.
Silkie I was so pleased for you and DS the other week, so sorry it's proving to be awful and complicated. I hope DS loves seeing the silkies.
Lemons sorry about DH's nanna.

I'm not entering the bread products debate; it will only make me hungry.
We've been away in the camper and as usual I ate too much.

Liver scan is on Wednesday. Blood counts have dropped back down, it's not hepatitis or an auto- immune disease. GP thinks it could have been viral, but the scan will reassure me (I hope).

sproutsandparsnips · 19/03/2023 20:51

Hope scan goes ok Iwandered.
Those pictures look like what I would call a crumpet Miss!

HildaTablet · 19/03/2023 20:55

That’s so poignant to read about your Mother’s Day card from DS, Silkie 💔 I cannot believe the utter horlicks they’ve making of his discharge. Well, obviously I can believe it as they’re a disgrace. Who’s the important one here, DS or macho egos?

Against my better judgment I’ll wade into the muffin debate…tbh I think they’re not eaten all that much here any more, although in Victorian times they were famously sold every day in the winter months by street vendors who would walk round with baskets or trays of them (balanced on their heads!) and ring a bell to advertise their wares. They’d knock on doors and people would buy them to have for tea.

@Mumtobabyhavoc the scone pronunciation argument is passionate and hard-fought here. For what it’s worth, I pronounce it to rhyme with ‘gone’, but plenty of people will insist it rhymes with ‘tone’ (they’d be wrong, obviously 🤣 😉 )

halfpasteleven · 19/03/2023 22:15

Happy Mother's Day to all of you celebrating today ( and Flowers to those of you who may be finding today hard)

Silkie your card sounds lovely- especially when DS had to write on a shiny surface. I really hope macho man gets his act together and grows up and puts DS needs first.

I had a lovely Mother's Day- very restful as much as any day is restful with a toddler and a lovely meal this evening.

MissConductUS · 19/03/2023 23:18

Silkie, that's a lovely story about your card.

Sprouts, you're right. The English muffin is an Americanized crumpet. I couldn't think of the word because we don't call them that. Scones are pretty easy to find here. The posh Italian supermarket's bakery makes them, plain and with raisins. They're fab, but a calorie bomb. I treat myself to one occasionally. For the record, the standard American pronunciation rhymes with "tone".

They were first sold here in NYC in 1880 by a Brit named Samuel Thomas. The picture I posted up thread is all from his bakery.

Looking at the picture of the toasted one reminded me of how much I love those plates. They're from Dansk, and that set was one of the first things DH and I bought when we moved in together.

@HildaTablet I did a brief search, "how to pronounce scone"? and I see what you mean!
Lots of articles proclaiming "correct pronunciation revealed" citing surveys and "experts." 🤔 Quite the rabbit hole....

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 20/03/2023 23:29

Back home, slept for hours in my own bed, relaxed on Sunday and am now catching up. I have seen interesting food pictures, which need investigation.
I get medication to prevent fungal infections and sores. All food tastes like disinfectant, which last for about four days and then I get really hungry.
Neuropathy is not fun, but they tweaked the meds and now the symptoms are reduced. I have to be slow and careful whatever I do with my hands, and I am - by nature - neither.
The flower has just blossomed in an indoor chili pot, no idea what it is and where it came from.

Come and tell me your dull and unexciting news 24: Calmly through the day
mathanxiety · 21/03/2023 03:33

Glad you got through another treatment, Prok. I hope the meds continue to control the neuropathy. I know that can be sore. It's good to know your appetite hasn't completely deserted you. Cardboard-flavoured food has to be disheartening. I love your flower Smile.

Are there many signs of spring in Berlin? My cousin near Koln posts photos of bare fields and trees near his home. We have some little shoots about two inches above the ground here, daylilies and hostas, and a few lilies of the valley. I've seen hellebores growing well, but they haven't bloomed yet. So far, the sound of woodpeckers is the only indication the season has changed.

HildaTablet · 21/03/2023 09:33

Glad you’re home and back in your own bed, Prok. Nothing beats being able to retreat to your own bed when you’re not feeling great.

IWanderedLonely · 22/03/2023 13:04

GlD you're back home Prok. Hope the neuropathy subsides.

I have a sleeping baby on my lap and am too cosy and lazy to move.

MissConductUS · 22/03/2023 15:53

Good to hear you're home Prok. Did they give you Gabapentin for the neuropathy?

Math, I've no real signs of spring here either, other than the fact that the bugs are coming out and it's warmer in the afternoon.

I've been to the dentist this morning and the novocaine has yet to wear off. The Miele technician returns tomorrow for another look at the washing machine, but I'm not hopeful he'll do any better than last time.

🤔

Hoping to get out and enjoy the last of the snow on one of the local ski hills today and take Havoc for one last day of sledding.

Prok, how are you feeling?

MissConductUS · 22/03/2023 17:29

I may have spoken too soon about there being no signs of spring. There are some flowers opening up around the reservoir and Mr. & Mrs. Duck were napping in the sun on a convenient rock.

I forgot to take a picture of the flowers, perhaps tomorrow.

Thanks Iwandered Hope the liver scan went OK today and it was just viral.

Thanks Hilda Interesting about the Victorian muffins. Hope you are fine.

Thanks Half Glad you had a good Mother's Day.

Thanks MissC Good to see spring is arriving there. It quite feels like spring here when we drive through the countryside full of lambs to see DS. Its quite a nice drive through lots of pretty villages with old houses.

Glad you have another chemo done Prok, sorry about the neuropathy and lack of taste.

Hope you enjoy the sledging Havoc

Woodpecker sounds must be nice Math

Just had DS for another overnight stay which was lovely and rabbit slept on top of him at night. He's coping very well with decrease in lorazepam and that looks like it won't be an issue to stop. They are planning discharge but no date still, earliest possible is first week of April though we can also have pretty much unlimited home leave too. I spoke to the lovely hospital psychiatrist about the home one and she believes it was him who prescribed the wrong drug before but she says she will not do a CTO on DS as he wants as its not in his best interests so that's good, its a return to hospital order. She also says that he will only be able to prescribe what is in court order which she and Maudsley will set unless DS consents which he never will so she says that will stop him and his anti psychotics but its not ideal. There are talks to be had. Rest of team is fine. And education meeting has been arranged but not looking that great.

Been finalising thing for the few days in Azores. DD got another job today at a very prestigious college and she was very excited.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 23/03/2023 04:46

@Silkierabbit sounds like good progress. 💖

Silkierabbit · 23/03/2023 05:26

Thanks Mum Just up with Floof at the moment who needed a 4.52am tuna. DH thought Floof would then go back to sleep but nope Floof is trilling non-stop. And rolling over and showing his tail off.
