...and tell me where you got it from!

DP and I have decided to get married early next year, which means we need to sort out an engagement ring fairly soon - I know we don't "need" to, but I have never had any nice jewellery and would like a nice shiny ring!

I think I'd like either a diamond or Sapphire ring, open to second hand/vintage. Not keen on a solitaire but clueless apart from that!

We have had a look in a couple of local high street shops and didn't find anything. Thinking of having a weekend away somewhere to look at rings: Birmimgham for the Jewellery Quarter, or London for Hatton Garden? Or somewhere else?!

If anyone has any good suggestions of where to go, let me know, and let us have a nose at your engagement rings and wedding bands : ).

I am a jeweller and love looking at these threads.
If you go to a workshop or indie jeweller they should have time to make you something within that timescale. But go soon, Christmas is insanely busy!! Having a bespoke ring is often less expensive than high street or off the peg.

A Sapphire is a good choice for an engagement ring, with no disrespect to pp I generally wouldn't recommend Emeralds (or aquamarine or tanzanite) for an engagement ring to be worn everyday. They are softer stones than diamond, sapphire or Ruby and chip or "rub" more easily.

I would also add if you like silver or white metal, then go for platinum its more hard wearing and stays white for longer. Its also much cheaper per gram. White gold is usually rhodium plated which wears off after time (it's easy to redo but platinum needs less maintenance)

Mine are sapphire & platinum, made by an independent designer whose main platform is Etsy. The stone can look very different colours depending on the light. I knew I didn't want a diamond - I imagined I'd go for something more vintage looking but I fell in love with this.

Saw this on another thread and it's my perfect ring. Absolutely stunning.

Mine is antique (1930s I think) with old cut diamonds, from the jewellery quarter in Birmingham. We had the wedding ring made to fit around it. They both need cleaning and re plating now, but I still love them.

Love it

Enjoying this thread. Don't have any rings (yet) and OH has just said to me "why are you looking at engagement rings!?"

HINT HINT

Some beautiful styles here. Following for more 😊

Mine is a platinum Art Nouveau diamond ring, would’ve been an estate ring rather than an engagement ring in 1910. It’s from a little antique shop in a village near our house. I had my wedding ring cast to match the curve of the ring, and now I’ve lost weight it’s miles too big and can’t be altered. Very annoying!

No wedding ring yet but my ring is from purely diamonds in London

My engagement ring is from LaurenB (online) and wedding rings are from Cara's Jewellers in Dubai - massive saving on both by not buying from high street!

Halstead · 10/11/2022 21:20

Yeah, that is annoying @HashBrownandBeans ... I feel your pain!

TheBirdintheCave · 10/11/2022 21:21

My engagement ring is a 1930s platinum and gold diamond solitaire with milgraining down the sides. My mother in law found it on the floor of a post office in the 70s and no one ever claimed it from the police station so she got to keep it. She gifted it to my husband as she said it had never felt right to wear it.

It needs a serious clean and polish at the moment 😂

My wedding ring is from 1950. It's Welsh gold and originally belonged to my grandma ❤️

Mines a bit different, we got married while in holiday in Las Vegas, I wanted a band and a stoned ring!
This was on one of the jewellers on the strip, and bought about 4 hours before we got married

I usually hate other peoples engagement/ wedding ring combos but I have to say this is beautiful, very classy

dizzydizzydizzy · 10/11/2022 21:24

Never been married or engaged so I don't have anything to show you. My friend has 5 engagement rings but never got married.

claracluck1978 · 10/11/2022 21:25

This is mine. Currently in the jewellery box as too small for my fat finger. Once it fits it's not coming off again! It's an antique cabochon cut ruby with old cut diamonds and is glorious!

@TheBirdintheCave thats the first time I’ve ever seen anyone with a ring remotely like mine. 👍🏼 They’re very unusual
