Heed my warning (about crisps)

I’m recovering from covid and I’ve been quite ill. I’ve actually gone an entire week without eating anything. I have fresubin to make up the calories but still.

Anhway, I really danced some pickled onion monster munch. So I got some. And I could taste it. Just.

So I had another. And another.

In the end, I had five packets. I felt good. I ate something!!

Then I realised my mistake. I have a sore now on my bottom left gum. Another one on the bottom right gum. And the skin has peeled away on my tongue.

Damn those crisps. Still have 4 left but I will eat those in moderation and scoff bags of cheesy balls instead.

I’m loving crisp sandwiches at the moment. Cheese, mayonnaise and pretty much any crisps.

Monster munch could work 🤔

I use Dairylea instead of butter or mayo, and have Walkers Cheese & Onion or Ready Salted

I once ate a whole bag of Coop Chardonnay vinegar crisps. Jesus fucking christ, by the time I’d stopped shovelling them in long enough to realise what a disaster my mouth was in it was too late.

I have to really portion control myself with them now. They taste so good though!

I can never not eat a whole bag. DH calls them crack cocaine Chardonnay crisps as they are so fucking addictive and we have to buy a bag each or I get nasty if he tries to take some of mine

Does anyone else remember the hedgehog flavour crisps of the early 1980s’? Basically smoky bacon flavour, if I remember correctly, which is another flavour of horror.

Lidl used to make a big bag of what looked and had the texture of wotsits, but they were peanut flavour!!

I can't really manage the strong vinegar taste anymore, though I will when I've eaten all the others in a multi pack.

Try Bamba...

Soubriquet · 29/10/2022 08:21

My absolute favourite crisps is Worcestershire sauce French fries.

Only Asda sell them.. and the nearest Asda is a 40 min drive away.

So when I go, I stock up.

Unfortunately it also means I devour them very quickly. Six packets at a time…

Oh yes - I was very young at the time but I remember being a bit disappointed with them. Not sure what I had expected hedgehog crisps to taste of….
I do remember they also made curry flavour crisps which were very strong but very dry.
I was too busy enjoying my cheese and onion ringos and pickled onion space raiders!

RNBrie · 29/10/2022 09:22

Do you remember Brannigans? Beef and Horesradish, ham and mustard. They were fabulous with a pint of larger.

@WhatTheHellIsAQuasar I think m&s might have stopped making their Skips... I can't find them in any of my local m&s shops and I'm DEVASTATED.

Yes I remember! I was only a kid and genuinely bought they were made from hedgehogs so wouldn’t eat them!

Damn, I want some Frazzles.

Boots used to do a version of frazzles. They were even baconier than frazzles but I think they’ve discontinued them. I miss them.

SquitMcJit · 29/10/2022 09:46

@Iamthewombat

Seabrooks still do Canadian Ham (lilac packet).

But I’ve not been able to find the weird but glorious Lamb and Mint for ages.

Disclaimer: I don’t work for Seabrooks ( just imagine…)

Bananalanacake · 29/10/2022 09:56

I live in Germany where monster Münch is not available Sad

Soubriquet · 29/10/2022 10:04

Yeah…I’m definitely regretting it now.

My poor bum hole feels likes someone has rubbed sand paper on it

That is excellent news! I will start campaigning for my local crisp outlets to stock the mighty Canadian Ham. I am in Lancashire, Seabooks are made in Yorkshire (Bradford) so I suspect a stealth ‘war of the crisp roses’: refusal to stock the good crisp flavours so that I buy local snacks instead.

But as you can see, the flavour range is nowhere near as good. Black pudding and mustard???? What madness is that?

Needmorelego · 29/10/2022 10:49

@MorrisseyGladioli I tried some of those peanut flavour wotsit thingys.
They were a betrayal to the snack aisle.
No. Just no.

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 29/10/2022 11:10

For those who (like me) loves spring onion crisps, have a look down the 'world foods' aisle of your supermarket. I found that 'cebulka' flavoured crisps were very similar.

hugoagogo · 29/10/2022 11:15

What were the ones shaped like little hollow pigs?

Thewolvesarerunningagain · 29/10/2022 11:32

Piglets!

CoopersChase · 29/10/2022 11:38

Ahhhh 10p packets of bacon flavoured piglets on the way home from school. Hollow = zero calories.

They really are.

goldfinchonthelawn · 29/10/2022 11:55

I didn't enjoy the last three.

@Emotionalsupportviper
Since this is a retro thread, can I just say: ROFL!
(great name btw.)

SquitMcJit · 29/10/2022 11:56

@Iamthewombat

I think you could be on to something there! Crisp wars.

I’m in Yorkshire and found them in Morrisons - worth a try if you’ve got one locally? Otherwise you’ll have to cross the border… I think Morrisons was originally a Bradford based supermarket so maybe why they still have the brand.

Or order online from Seabrooks:

www.seabrookcrisps.com/flavours/canadian-ham

Weirdly they don’ t have all their flavours available online - just the basic ones. Which is probably a good thing.

Now that is a weird flavour combo.

Although I’m strangely intrigued…😁

Pearbear · 29/10/2022 12:15

@SquitMcJit i don’t know if i love you or hate you.

The joy to go on Seabrooks crisps website and discover they do make my favourite lamb and mint sauce crisps but the horror that you can’t order them online is awful.

Needmorelego · 29/10/2022 12:22

Do you remember last year Walkers did mince pie flavour crisps?
They were quickly put on a recall due to "incorrect allergy information on the packaging".
No... I reckon it was because everyone said "Walkers.....what on earth were you thinking you dingbats"
