Heed my warning (about crisps)

I’m recovering from covid and I’ve been quite ill. I’ve actually gone an entire week without eating anything. I have fresubin to make up the calories but still.

Anhway, I really danced some pickled onion monster munch. So I got some. And I could taste it. Just.

So I had another. And another.

In the end, I had five packets. I felt good. I ate something!!

Then I realised my mistake. I have a sore now on my bottom left gum. Another one on the bottom right gum. And the skin has peeled away on my tongue.

Damn those crisps. Still have 4 left but I will eat those in moderation and scoff bags of cheesy balls instead.

The real mystery is what became of spring onion crisps. They were everywhere and then they disappeared in the late 80s. I’m not that upset, however, because they were crap. Always tasted a bit sweet.

Other crisp flavours that vanished:

Sausage and tomato (they really existed)

Non-monster munch pickled onion

The two best Seabrooks flavours: Canadian ham and Indian tandoori.

Lemon sole flavour (can't remember the make)

Kipper (Tudor (now Walkers))

I think I see a theme developing here . . .

If anyone finds any gravadlax flavour - or even jellied eel or hillock flavour - let me know will you.

Asking for a friend, obviously . . . 😗

Emotionalsupportviper · 30/10/2022 20:23

*Whillick, not hillock

Oh, dear! 😂

Yes. But I think the brand was Hedgehog, not the flavour .

I was vegetarian at the time and I remember having the piss taken out of me at school for having 'hedgehog' crisps. Clearly I am still not over it.

Mmm, yes.. but no.. but..

They were meant to sound as if they were Hedgehog flavoured which eventually caused sufficient issue they were taken off sale as obviously they did not contain Hedgehog, this was ironed out and with a tweak to the name, they went back on sale. SO they went from 'Hedgehog Flavoured Crisps' to 'Hedgehog Flavour Crisps'...

They were basically sausage flavoured (pork fat and herbs) and I quite liked them, but then I had little basis for comparison as my mother bought very little junk food and only got these because she liked the idea of them being hedgehog flavour... she was an odd woman.

On the subject of hedgehog crisps, does anyone remember pig crisps? I don’t think they were called that, but they were sort of little puffed crisps in the shape of a pig.

Yes - mid 1980s. I think they were called 'Piglets'.

pagopago · 30/10/2022 23:47

I miss Cream & Cheese NikNaks.

pagopago · 30/10/2022 23:48

leopardprintlara · 30/10/2022 08:29

@pagopago I got some packets of lays in Poundland few weeks ago

@leopardprintlara thanks, I'll have a look in my local one.

secretfreckle · 31/10/2022 01:07

Had a migraine today, but some ibuprofen, two cans of Coke and two packs of salt and vinegar Walkers sorted me right out.
Pigs in blankets flavoured Pringles were amazing (only available one Christmas at Waitrose. Haven't seen them since)
After a bad week at school, can't beat lying in bed eating a family pack of own brand Frazzles.

WhatTheHellIsAQuasar · 31/10/2022 03:16

@BooseysMom golden wonder still make quarterbacks - I found some in my local nisa but apparently spar do them too

WeisheitNurInWahrheit · 31/10/2022 06:07

I think what @BloodAndFire is remembering, @WiddlinDiddlin, is the vegetarian flavours that were made by the same brand (example pictures attached). The hedgehog flavour business happened before I was born - I only heard about it as an adult. The vegetarian flavours (& the company making a donation to Tiggywinkles) are what I remember from when I was wee.

Tayto are the best “normal” crisp. Not getting into the North/South Tayto argument though 🤐

I can eat 6 packs of cheese and onion baked crisps no problem, but actual crisps, flippn nora, after 3 bags my mouth feels as though it has been skinned......and as for pineapple, no thank you!

CornedBeef451 · 31/10/2022 09:18

@Soubriquet very occasionally Tesco has Worcestershire sauce flavoured French fries and I go a bit mad until they disappear again.

@Emotionalsupportviper
I've seen Canadian Bacon Seabrooks in Sainsbury's in Carlisle recently 🙂

Winter2020 · 31/10/2022 19:06

When I was a student I munched several packs of crisps hungrily when drunk - I think Nik Naks were involved and promptly got a gum infection because I cut my gums to ribbons. Needed antibiotics.

Ooooh... no never had those only the Hedgehog flavour, but they too donated to Tiggywinkles (another reason Mother approved!).

This thread has cheered me right up on a bad day!

I don't know half of these brands (am in Australia) but we do have Tyrrells. I found the Worcestershire Sauce ones in a discount shop once and went back to buy the last 7 packets (180g each).

We have a brand called Red Rock, they do a parmesan and truffle flavour that I think I could actually saw my face off with. Full truffle taste and everything.

Adding to shopping list for tonight, can't wait.

No way! That's amazing, thanks for letting me know. I'll never forget them!

leopardprintlara · 01/11/2022 08:36

@Dustyblue do they still have burger rings and twisties in Australia? I had to hide in toilet to keep my burger rings to myself…twisties are next level cheesy dust.

Dustyblue · 01/11/2022 09:17

@leopardprintlara Oh yes, you've picked two of my favourites there!

Twisties come in Cheese (orange) or Chicken (yellow). I never ever buy chicken. Orange fingers all the way.

Burger Rings- A Love Affair

The God of the salty umami crunchy face hurting cure-all of snacks.
Whether mildly hungry, bored or dealing with a Force Five hangover, Burger Rings are your friend.

I once found (and I tell you this is the glorious truth) a small-ish Burger Ring in my packet that was made of PURE POWDER. I swear I went blind for a few seconds and saw fireworks in my head.

It will never happen again, but no-one can take it away from me.

leopardprintlara · 01/11/2022 10:04

@Dustyblue yes! Nothing has come close to a burger ring for me. Pure powder - insane!!!! Chicken twisties I have never tried but the cheese ones with a can of solo 👌immense for a nasty hangover.

Everyflippingusernameistaken · 01/11/2022 11:01

Would not be a problem for me. I detest Monster Munch. UGH!!! My girls liked them though.

GrannyWeatherwaxsHatpin · 01/11/2022 12:47

@WeisheitNurInWahrheit those are the very ones! Goodness, I haven't seen those for many a year.

I've never had burger rings but Spar (I think?) did burger bites. The petrol station sold them at 39p a bag and they were puff balls of salty burgery flavour. So bad they were good.
