Heed my warning (about crisps)

I’m recovering from covid and I’ve been quite ill. I’ve actually gone an entire week without eating anything. I have fresubin to make up the calories but still.

Anhway, I really danced some pickled onion monster munch. So I got some. And I could taste it. Just.

So I had another. And another.

In the end, I had five packets. I felt good. I ate something!!

Then I realised my mistake. I have a sore now on my bottom left gum. Another one on the bottom right gum. And the skin has peeled away on my tongue.

Damn those crisps. Still have 4 left but I will eat those in moderation and scoff bags of cheesy balls instead.

I think this may actually be my fav thread ever! Esp the diagram of the monster munch , I thought it was a foot too! Clue was always in the title though! Can’t believe I’ve only just learnt it’s a monster!! 😂😂😂

Oh no no no not for me, they are the crisp equivalent of a Rich Tea. Would be OK if dipped in chilli and onion powder.

I know. I love a strong crisp of the mouth-stripping variety. But there was something so deliciously greasy about those ready salted chipsticks. Sigh.

My poison is flaming hot Cheetos. They dye your fingers red but dear god those stale textured nobbly sticks are addictive! The following morning, ooh the regrets!

OMG Flamin hot Cheetos. Every time I travel to the US (for business) I stuff my suitcase with them from CVS. Gone off and googled them on Amazon to buy. I want one now!

Monster Munch are claws - Walkers said so a couple of years ago

Every day is a school day on Mumsnet. This thread is so educational.

Has nobody had the hand cooked Chardonnay salt snd vinegar from Aldi?
They're lethal!

Shhh. Don’t tell them, they will all want them and that will be my supply scuppered.

My husband introduced me to the co op version first and I used to send him there to buy supplies on the way home from work, but one glorious day (on a mundane nappy buying trip) I discovered the Aldi version and my crisp eating life hasn’t been the same since.

Jubaju · 28/10/2022 21:26

They are definitely claws!!

Walkers confirmed it after the Twitter rage about it

I can’t take the ups and downs of this thread

Iamthewombat · 28/10/2022 23:29

SquitMcJit · 28/10/2022 22:48

Yes, Seabrooks do them

The real mystery is what became of spring onion crisps. They were everywhere and then they disappeared in the late 80s. I’m not that upset, however, because they were crap. Always tasted a bit sweet.

Other crisp flavours that vanished:

Sausage and tomato (they really existed)

Non-monster munch pickled onion

The two best Seabrooks flavours: Canadian ham and Indian tandoori.

ViolinPin · 28/10/2022 23:34

I've never known such troopers and dedication, I must admit I can't hack the pickled onion and SV crisps of this world, the best I can manage is smokey bacon, maybe a marmite crisp

but 5 bags !! You lot, you lot are mangnificent 👏

I salute you.

user47438673 · 28/10/2022 23:36

Tandoori crisps! Coop does naan chips which are right up there with the chardonnay crisps. Triple-A calibre with the right amount of crunch, 3 different flavours in a pack and some bright beetroot coloured tikka ones.

Justgivemewine · 28/10/2022 23:38

Soubriquet · 28/10/2022 20:23

Monster

Thank you @Soubriquet, it all makes sense now 😄😄

Iamthewombat · 28/10/2022 23:40

Yeah the Co op naan chips are pretty good but the mighty Seabrooks Indian tandoori (RIP) were epic. All the flavour (bright yellow dust) got caught in the ridges. You really need a crinkle crisp for maximum flavour density. If you went crinkle with the Co op sea salt and Chardonnay vinegar crisps you’d need a health warning!

mowly77 · 28/10/2022 23:43

Sausage and tomato @Iamthewombat ! I’m getting physical waves of nostalgia.

Also second the ready salted chipstick.

I am desperate for crisps, but there is nothing but stale Mini Cheddars or a Coop Salt & Chardonnay V job but I can’t bring myself to like S&V. SAD FACE

BrutusMcDogface · 28/10/2022 23:47

waterlego · 28/10/2022 19:36

I once ate a whole tube of salt and vinegar Pringles, licking the ‘dust’ off each one before consuming it. It actually made my tongue bleed. Not, like, torrents of blood, just tiny amounts which appeared to be coming out of my taste buds. Haven’t done it since, though still love S&V crisps, of any brand (McCoys and Discos are the best).

Have you tried co-op salt and Chardonnay vinegar? They are the best crisps ever, ever made (and sooooooo vinegary and sharp! 😙)

Penguinsaregreat · 28/10/2022 23:49

Loving this thread.
I might have missed it but I raise you ……Scampy Fries.
unfortunately the only packs I can find are sold with Frazzles which are nowhere near as good. So I end up left with all the Frazzles just so I can get my hands on the delicious Scampy Fries.

CPL593H · 28/10/2022 23:51

I want pickled onion Monster Munch so badly now. I would settle for salt and vinegar pork crackling. I think I may have a bag of Cheddars available and my life has turned to ashes in my mouth.

BrutusMcDogface · 28/10/2022 23:51

Oh my. I see I’ve missed a few (7) pages in my haste to recommend the co-op crisps….to see that I’m not the first to do so! The best, I tell you.

SpideyCraw · 29/10/2022 00:07

burblish · 28/10/2022 21:06

If you like pickled onion Monster Munch, have you tried Walkers Pickled Onion crisps? (And a 6 pack of crisps is insanely easy to eat.)

Yes - delicious! Bettered only by the gone but not forgotten pickled onion Discos. They were really quite something.

tapdancingmum · 29/10/2022 00:10

Tesco do a ready salted chipstick which I love. Except I can't just have one, I shovel them in so fast I cause myself an injury due to them being cut like matchsticks 😀

I think I'll just have a few but they must be covered in some sort of salt barbiturate as once I start I just can't stop.

The other flavour I'm missing at the moment is marmite flavour. Since Covid and the problems with getting crisps they have disappeared. They were the only flavour that I knew would always be there as no one else likes them.

I really fancy pickled onion flavoured monster munch now. Must add it to my shopping list for tomorrow.

Wait, I forgot the pickled onion fish and chips crisps, the burton’s ones. So tangy they seem to infect the air around your face and erode your eyeballs as well as your tongue, but totally worth it

TheArtfulStodger · 29/10/2022 00:12

Loserluck · 28/10/2022 19:45

(You know crisps didn’t give you ulcers really don’t you? If they did I don’t think they’d be freely sold to kids and everyone)

Ive hsd some give me ulcers, ditto certain sweets like Skittles. But I'm 99% sure I've got a weird allergy to the Skittles

1000umbrellas · 29/10/2022 00:12

Well Walkers seem to be going a bit coy on the monster/foot question, this from a packet I just snaffled out of the big saucepan purely for research purposes (thanks for the reminder @Itstarts !)

Heed my warning (about crisps)
1000umbrellas · 29/10/2022 00:17

Also imho S+V Squares have the edge on both French Fries and Pringles in the stripping off your mouth skin stakes but I have yet to try these legendary Chardonnay vinegar crisps...

ParrotsAteThemAll · 29/10/2022 00:21

I’ve definitely lost a few layers of mouth skin to Pringles s&v. Monster munch s&v are hardcore, I’m impressed with your efforts OP!

My fave pastime is marvelling at Home Bargains crisp isle, it’s a thing of beauty. Long forgotten crisps are there in all their glory!
