How would you spend £80 in WH Smith?

I have been given a voucher Smile

Literally the only thing I'd want from WHSmiths is a traditional advent calendar. I think I'd save if for when I was travelling and wanted a water at the train station. I'd have it for years Grin

Maybe a diary and a pen? And a Toblerone? I went in the other day and the price of the books was so high I preferred to spend the same money at my local independent bookstore.

MrsJBaptiste · 18/10/2022 07:37

I'd try and sell it for £60 - you can then spend less money but in a shop you actually want to go in.

£80? What a waste when so many people are watching what they spend at the moment.

DarkDarkNight · 18/10/2022 07:39

My son got one off my SIL, regifted I’m sure. I bought him Roblox vouchers with it so you can definitely spend them on vouchers.

CeeJay81 · 18/10/2022 07:49

As others have said I'd go with seeing what bits you can get for Xmas for people and use the money saved somewhere else.

For those wondering how they manage to stay open. It's Airport and Train station shops that keep the business going. If it was just the high street ones they'd have gone under ages ago.

blusteryshowersaway · 18/10/2022 08:18

Christmas stuff, stocking fillers, chocolate etc.

Or possibly a new Filofax and inserts. I do like a paper diary though.

Needmorelego · 18/10/2022 09:55

@MrsJBaptiste why would you say it's a "waste" when although WHSmith is often over priced they actually sell some decent stuff that make a nice treat for someone.
I actually went into their website last night to see how I could spend £80 if I had it. It took me barely five minutes to think "ooh I'd get that and that" etc. Stuff I wouldn't normally get from there but with free money (ie an £80 gift voucher) I would really be able to treat myself.

Deathraystare · 18/10/2022 10:07

I could easily ....on books and stationery (stationary??).

Somanysocks · 19/10/2022 10:38

StationEry

AlwaysFoldingWashing · 19/10/2022 11:18

I remember it as being StationEry by thinking E is for Envelope which is a stationery item

AngelicaElizaAndPeggy · 19/10/2022 13:37

£80? That would be just enough for a king size twix and a flashing novelty soft toy pencil case in wh Smith.

Seriously? Some lovely winter novels to curl up with.

Our local WHS always seemed so poorly lit that I found it

hello? Were you posting from WHS? Have you got lost?! Grin

I know what you mean, the aisles seem narrow and the shelves stacked high, and a bit dark. I presume it meets fire safety regulations, but I do feel a bit trapped in there.

Smartstuffed · 19/10/2022 14:10

... found it depressing.

Smartstuffed · 19/10/2022 14:13

Yes... I'm somewhere near the rear of the store but fairly confident that I can make my way to the tills if I follow the scent of the chocolate...

Somanysocks · 19/10/2022 19:02

I actually asked a staff member if they were closing down as the shop looked do sparse and messy. She wasn't happy and said 'we're sorting out the Christmas stuff'. Oops

Girasoli · 19/10/2022 19:09

Easily! Art supplies for me and toys/book/stationary for the DC

BlackForestCake · 19/10/2022 21:43

I actually stopped going into WHS altogether years ago because I was so sick of being pushed to buy a chocolate orange or whatever it is in addition to what I actually wanted.

IF I WANTED A FUCKING CHOCOLATE ORANGE I WOULD PICK ONE UP.

Anyway, at the station recently, having forgotten I was boycotting them because it's so long ago, I wanted a paper and took it to the cash desk where the assistant pointed to the self-service checkout and told me to use that. So I scanned my paper AND THE MACHINE TRIED TO SELL ME A CHOCOLATE ORANGE!

Reader, I left the paper and walked away.

Fairyjuice · 19/10/2022 21:45

Ooh I'd love this, would splurge on a filofax and loads of stationary bits 😁

By the Nigel Slater Christmas Chronicles book for £9 and come join us over on the dedicated thread

I'd buy, a new diary for next year, wrapping paper and things for birthdays and Christmas. Stock up on birthday cards

Magazines & newspaper. So like small bits at a time not dropping £80 at once

xprincessxjanetx · 19/10/2022 21:59

I'd just buy a bunch of books

Is the book really £9.
Its 20 on line and I've never seen it for less than £15
