4 packets of fags and a rubber could probably take up your gift voucher balance. £19 for 20 cigarettes for my gran I couldn't believe it

WeeblesWibbleWobble · 17/10/2022 20:02

A nice note book
. Then probably the rest on the Dcs as they often have nice little bits in there.

Whataplanker · 17/10/2022 20:56

2 birthday cards.

waltzingparrot · 17/10/2022 21:42

Magazine subscription

They sell red letter days.
I'd use it for one of those. A night away or something

We have a winner, thank you!

Is spend it quick, as it always seems to me a brand that cannot last!

lots of books would be my answer, and maybe some nice stationery or craft things.

I'd think the same - but then, I'd have thought that 5 and maybe 10 years ago, and yet they continue. I can't think of a single thing that WH Smith has that other shops don't have (and for more competitive prices) - except maybe a few extra magazines to choose from (and the reason the other shops don't carry them is because they are niche - and we now have this thing called the internet to buy harder-to-find things). Oh, and the dirty carpets, of course.... (twitter.com/whs_carpet)

I assumed it was the wholesale side keeping it afloat, but as PP said, that was sold off some time ago.

myexisawanker · 17/10/2022 23:05

Couple of magazines, a birthday card and biro. That should set you back about £80!

PinkSyCo · 17/10/2022 23:12

2 sheets of wrapping paper and a 2nd class stamp?

snowspider · 17/10/2022 23:20

I would get a big supply of pens and biros and felt tips etc, a World of Interiors magazine, annuals for the grand children on multi buy offer, and a large bar of chocolate

RoseMartha · 17/10/2022 23:21

Books
Stationary
Jigsaw puzzles
Chocolate
Craft magazines

converseandjeans · 17/10/2022 23:21

Books
Sharpies
Stationery/notelets

Bedsheets4knickers · 17/10/2022 23:21

Stamps

FreshlyLaunderedSheets · 17/10/2022 23:25

I'd get a diary and calendar for next year, a pretty notebook, the expensive magazines I usually only get on holiday, a cookery book and I would stock up on cards for the immediate family for the next year. And that would be most of it gone I think?

Bedsheets4knickers · 17/10/2022 23:47

Actually forget the stamps .. probably stock up on protacters and other stationary to see my two through secondary

Xmasbaby11 · 18/10/2022 00:00

Books, art stuff, stationery. I could find lots for my kids too. I could easily spend £80 there!

TheOrigRights · 18/10/2022 00:20

A single birthday card and a chocolate orange at the till.

Randomword6 · 18/10/2022 00:21

Printer ink

bringincrazyback · 18/10/2022 00:25

I could easily spend £80 in Smiths, at one time it would have been books and a new Filofax, but now I've stopped using Filofaxes it'd just be books. It would be fun to spend £80 on books in one go. 😃

Gingerkittykat · 18/10/2022 00:59

I agree with spending it quickly in case they go out of business.

It's so sad that what was once a brilliant shop has gone so far downhill.

LibertyLily · 18/10/2022 04:03

MatildaMonroe · 17/10/2022 15:29

@BlackForestCake they used to have cabinets of fountain pens , now they have biros in multi packets hanging on a plinth
Shame really

I used to love their cabinets of fountain pens and really looked foward to receiving a voucher from a great uncle to spend on a nice pen 😍

DH and I were only saying the other day how WHS has gone down the tubes.

I'd use it for a Red Letter Day experience or use it for gifts for others.

MintJulia · 18/10/2022 04:16

Art materials. They have pastels and quite decent watercolours. I could spend it all in one go 😊

SazCat · 18/10/2022 04:26

Ah I have really fond memories of my part time job at WH Smith 20 years ago. It was a decent shop back then! I don't even ever think to go in nowadays, not sure how it's still going.

But yeah I agree get an experience day!

Realityloom · 18/10/2022 04:32

It's too much money perhaps £30 would of been fine.

You can buy some Xmas gifts though.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 18/10/2022 06:26

I have not bought anything in WH Smiths for decades...everything they sell is cheaper elsewhere....Wilko....Card Factory etc....however i'd treat myself to a gorgeous fountain pen.
