I have been given a voucher Smile

Take a look at @ WHSCarpet on Twitter - it's brilliant!

NancyDrooo · 17/10/2022 16:18

Give them it to put money in the meter, every time I go into WHSmiths (two branches near me) I’m stunned by how dark and gloomy they are!!

Greetings cards. Stationery. A nice diary. Chocolate. Wrapping paper. Not books - they’re RRP so usually much cheaper elsewhere.

Idontevenknow · 17/10/2022 16:19

What was 20% off gate?

When I was a teenager it was a great shop, always busy. Now as an adult it's always so quiet and I wonder how it still makes enough money to stay open. Shame.

I'd get a few new books every month

WireSkills · 17/10/2022 16:22

Fancy notebooks, nice pens and a few jigsaw puzzles!

It is a bloody miracle that shop is still going though. I have a theory that it's the airport ones that keep every other shop going as they've got a captive audience.

Why anyone would voluntarily buy anything in Smiths is beyond me. So expensive yet looks like a pound shop in there!

Suprima · 17/10/2022 16:23

I’d stock up on birthday cards and anything I could gift as a present for Christmas.

then save my own cash for something I actually wanted

Somanysocks · 17/10/2022 16:24

20% off a gate would be useful if you need a new gate.

Aixellency · 17/10/2022 16:26

Why would someone do that to you, OP? Let me guess, a parent who forgot you’re not 11 years old and starting a new term at school?

A fountain pen you don’t actually want?

A few Everyman Classics?

All the accoutrements for the next big celebration - banners and balloons and stuff?

Posters for a child at boarding school?

A huge drawing pad and the biggest Caran d’Ache tin ever?

Happy shopping!

WizardOfUK · 17/10/2022 16:27

Books, if there's nothing you want them use it to buy Xmas presents

MyPetCrow · 17/10/2022 16:27

Buy a magazine, drink and snack at one of the train station ones you might get a couple of pounds change 😁

Needmorelego · 17/10/2022 16:27

Hardback books instead of waiting for the paperback (there's several out I want to read)
(Overpriced) Lego
Big pile of magazines
Craft stuff
A Beanie Boo or Squishmallow style soft toy
Jigsaw
Traditional advent calendar with baby Jesus on 🙂(they are oddly really expensive)

I could spend £80 within minutes at WHSmith.. normally I wouldn't because you can usually get everything they sell cheaper elsewhere. But with a voucher I would have no problem spending it.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 17/10/2022 16:28

Buy them some new carpet....

Why can't you use the voucher for certain items, though - like stamps or a different voucher? It's not like it's a promotional money-off-when-you-spend-£X voucher, designed to increase sales - it's literally somebody else who has paid them £80 with cash/card in advance. You should be able to use it to buy exactly the same selection of goods as your friend could have bought with their standard payment method. Why are they punishing you/your friend for having paid them well in advance and agreed to ringfence a decent amount of money for spending with them? They should be grateful for it.

I'd use it over some time for things like magazines or newspapers that cost the same there as anywhere else. As PPs, most of their other stuff is very overpriced compared to elsewhere.

glassfully · 17/10/2022 16:30

I find WHSmith quite good for cookbooks. They have a regular rotation of books on offer for a fraction of the RRP and usually less than Amazon. I almost feel guilty buying them sometimes.

TenoringBehind · 17/10/2022 16:34

We recently struggled to spend £45 of vouchers. Our local one doesn’t really sell books. Ended up buying lots of pens.

Sewraymesewla · 17/10/2022 16:37

I’d look at what they have to buy as gifts for others for Christmas and birthdays etc, I got some good toys there last year, then divert that money into something of my choice, a sort of odd regifting.

justcantgetenough · 17/10/2022 16:37

As suggested use vouchers for Xmas/birthday presents and use the money you've saved elsewhere!

Even though I'd have no problem spending it in the stationary or art section. I don't go in WHSmiths anymore as I can't resist notebooks or pens plus so expensive

Luxurysleuth007 · 17/10/2022 16:37

I really don’t think I could spend £80 in there without wasting a chunk of it. What exactly do they sell?

Mysterian · 17/10/2022 16:45

I would buy 60 Chocolate Oranges and see if the person at the checkout still asks " would you like a Chocolate Orange with that?"

DilemmaDelilah · 17/10/2022 16:49

Books, books, books and more books. And maybe some InkJoy gel pens in funky colours.

Cattytabby · 17/10/2022 16:50

Can you use them online? The website has toys or mugs etc.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 17/10/2022 16:59

Grin Grin Grin

RodiganReed · 17/10/2022 16:59

If you're murdered any time soon OP, your family need to signpost the police to whoever got you these vouchers.. Psychopath

TheFormidableMrsC · 17/10/2022 17:12

A couple of bags of crisps and 2 drinks at the Kings X station branch.

Marellatea · 17/10/2022 17:31

A Filofax? I bought my DD one a few years ago (when she was 12) and she loved it.

re. 20% gate, I think lots of people had discount codes that they supposedly shouldn’t have had and WHSmith cancelled orders. Then refunds were taking ages to come through.

Ambertonix · 17/10/2022 17:38

Books, overpriced christmas mags (since i have a voucher!) and chocolate!

DoingJustFine · 17/10/2022 17:42

£80 won't buy much in smiths. Maybe a kinder egg and a magazine?

Or use it for Christmas stuff (annuals, cards, etc)
