Tesco is out of stock for everything - we’re doomed!

Logged onto the Tesco site this morning to book a slot for early November. Everything is showing out of stock! Perhaps they know something we don’t…
Apparently they only have one type of red wine to sell (Malbec) and that’s out of stock, too. Gonna be a long and hard winter.🙁

war in Ukraine, as well as sanctions against Russia, have resulted in a massive decline in the supply of major staple foods. This has led to a rise in food prices globally.

does no one follow the news?

HerbertChops · 16/10/2022 09:27

No problem here (SWLondon) with food, been to Sainsburys and Tescos last week and both fully stocked.

Am having difficulty with medication though. Did an online repeat prescription order with the biggest online pharmacy 2 weeks early as last month there were delays. I can’t miss a dose or get horrendous side effects. It was approved by GP but showing on pharmacy app as delayed for over a week and now saying they can’t get either medication at all this month. Now have to go to GP tomorrow to beg for an urgent prescription and try local pharmacys 😬

Tbf I don’t much… too depressing but even I knew that! 🙂

Mammma91 · 16/10/2022 09:29

I had a bit of a wobble when I couldn’t get red onion or courgette on Monday. I think we’re in for a long winter!

waffless · 16/10/2022 09:29

Do you always shop on SUNDAYS? Worst day tbh

amatsip · 16/10/2022 09:30

I’m in north east and my app shows over 200 red wines to add to basket only the odd one not available, same on my usuals, at least 95% available.

I’m wondering if it’s because it’s a while off and they don’t know what they can guarantee being available - someone upthread mentioned close expiry dates which I’m also seeing. It must be very hard for them.

I don’t have a regular supermarket but have noticed all of them having empty shelves and fridges this last six months. Some shops have had their layouts changed to try to conceal this. There is always a fridge with a sign saying out of order, on a frequency I’ve never seen before (in the summer I was prepared to believe it was the heat but now I think they just don’t have the stock). Our local Waitrose has started turning more aisles into non food.

You need to go early in the day or there is often very little left. There are also lots of new brands I’ve never seen before. This is London, glad to hear other parts of the country are not necessarily seeing this. Of course even when there is stock, it’s all ludicrously expensive. Reminds me of being in a foreign supermarket where the numbers are all different and your usual products aren’t there.

I'm not keen on courgettes, but they seem to have plenty in the co-op if you can get to one. No shortages there, although it could be regional.

I couldn’t get any on Ocado last week so I went to Aldi, who had none and neither did the Co-Op next door.

Rosio · 16/10/2022 09:31

What happens if you search pain killers or medicine? Mine is only showing Tesco paracetamol and nothing else at all 🤔 maybe something wrong with the site

lightand · 16/10/2022 09:31

Mocking someone is such an ugly characteristic.

silverclock222 · 16/10/2022 09:31

There will be some people so mentally damaged by covid panic buyers - which I assume OP was due to this scaremongering post. Let's face it, nobody's life can be that dull they'd create a post like this for any other reason. Absolutely no issues in my local supermarkets - Asda, Aldi, Tesco. We also have Lidl and Morrisons and never seen stock issues there over the last couple of weeks. You really need to consider how damaging these stupid posts can be these days.

waffless · 16/10/2022 09:31

With your man name I would question your motives. Obviously for November they will increase prices so is showing as unavailable?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 16/10/2022 09:32

i tried to buy an anti histamine and certain varieties in tesco, ie their own brand, were not available until January!

waffless · 16/10/2022 09:32

MN name not man name

silverclock222 · 16/10/2022 09:32

Oh and I'm rural Scotland too!

Every kind of antihistamine in Superdrug.
Sounds like Tesco have their own problems.

ThenecklaceofLizTruss · 16/10/2022 09:33

It’s updated and stock has returned. I suspect some changes were tested but all good.

ScarlettnotOHara · 16/10/2022 09:34

At least we can go to the shops without fear of being bombed like the poor people in Ukraine.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 16/10/2022 09:34

why would you want courgettes in winter?

Maireas · 16/10/2022 09:34

PriamFarrl · 16/10/2022 09:31

Must be regional. All the supermarkets in my town are well stocked. Or the locals don't buy courgettes!

MrsLargeEmbodied · 16/10/2022 09:35

thank you @Maireas
perhaps

DaisyWaldron · 16/10/2022 09:35

Lots of shortages near me. I had to four different shops last week to get the ingredients DS needed to bring into school for food tech, and I was really lucky - I got the last pack of courgettes in the shop.

BakewellGin1 · 16/10/2022 09:38

My local Asda is providing me with a full shop and no substitutes today for the second week in a row. Must be a regional thing or a Tesco thing. My local Aldi is well stocked too. Popped in there for a few bits on Friday.

StapFooterin · 16/10/2022 09:39

Shopping app all up and running again here in NI. Crisis over (shortest crisis ever.)

ProfessorFusspot · 16/10/2022 09:40

Wouldn't want you to go short on red plonk now would we?

It might be inevitable. Malbec and cabernet sauvignon aren't produced in the UK because the grapes simply won't ripen properly - the climate's too cold and the growing season's too short. You should be able to find Pinot Noir, Meunier, and Dornfelder varietals, though. Apparently Divico can grow as well.

I wonder if the UK will up its production of black grapes post-post-Brexit? Currently they're only about 10% of the total annual grape crop, which cannot possibly keep the masses in (checks notes) "red plonk" indefinitely. 🍇😮🍷
