Tesco is out of stock for everything - we’re doomed!

Logged onto the Tesco site this morning to book a slot for early November. Everything is showing out of stock! Perhaps they know something we don’t…
Apparently they only have one type of red wine to sell (Malbec) and that’s out of stock, too. Gonna be a long and hard winter.🙁

I use 3 supermarkets on average a week and all have had issues with various products for months. I had to explain to my brother who lives abroad, when he visited that you can't just assume you can go into a shop and find something anymore, like we could 5 or 10 years ago. It's amazing how we've got used to this since Brexit

I'm definitely used to it.

You cannot just shop in one supermarket anymore imo.

Tbh its cheaper to mix supermarkets. (yes I have priced this up). Aldi came out cheapest for me on like for like products I buy, by a few pence against Asda. However if I do an Aldi/asda combo shop (they are next to each other where I live) I can save quite a bit.

Supermarket loyalty is promoted but actually its really not the cheapest way to do it.

Plus it has ended up being a good way to protect against shortages.

Because I plan to short this way, it does cost me a little more time, but ultimately it saves me doing the top up shop in the week, which ends up being more expensive and costs me petrol too.

Just stop this now.
It's very silly and makes people panic.
Remember March 2020?

Oh do behave 🙄

HouseBook · 16/10/2022 10:10

@mamabear715

I don't recall @Nowisthesummerofourdiscontent saying anything about panic.

You don't think the 'we're doomed' is at all panicky?

Never. I will never behave 😉

Rockbird · 16/10/2022 10:11

All of the supermarkets round me have had huge gaps on their shelves for months but Tesco is definitely the worst. Easy for some to say buy an alternative but if your usuals are £1 and the alternatives are £2.50 that's going to make a huge difference to your bill.

xFlowerBeanx · 16/10/2022 10:11

Its disgraceful where I live. I use asda and lots of items are always put of stock. Similar for home bargains, never have any fresh sandwiches. Shelves are always bare in that section. Was no milkshakes either when I tried to get one Friday then went to asda and couldn't get either.
Never as much fruit or essentials like toilet paper . Can't get the fresh veg to make a soup. Thank all the brexiteers for that. Our work is the same , we are struggling to source supplies since brexit are vast majority have to be imported from outside UK , virtually impossible to source from within , and even if there wasn't a supply issue, there's also an issue getting it delivered due to shortage with drivers as a result of brexit aswell

MrsLargeEmbodied · 16/10/2022 10:11

i remember being so disappointed with sainsburys @ 20 years ago when they had no onions from UK
they were from New Zealand, and in fact so many shelves were bare, saturday afternoon
i dont do online anymore and occasionally shelves are bare in lidl, asda, tesco - just reconsider your menu plan, no courgettes? buy something else

Apparently not 🙄

MrsRuggles · 16/10/2022 10:13

Are people really not finding shortages in some areas? I've been photographing a lot of supermarkets in the Eastern area and London for much of this year. As the Tesco boss said, it's not that people will starve but there will be less choice and shortages.

Shops are covering the gaps with printed material, filling large spaces with a lot of one product rather than having a variety, and even pulling stock to the front of empty shelves so at first glance they look full.

Comparing this with information from friends who live in EU countries or have come back from holidays, the contrast is startling.

Gonna go of piste here, hows about using a different supermarket?????🙄

I don’t know about others, but we buy a delivery pass for one supermarket. I don’t want to use another and then have to pay for delivery. I also have a list of favourites in Sainsbury’s, so an order takes a couple of minutes. It would take ages to search for everything if I used a different one as a one off.
No need to roll your eyes like people are stupid.

Whiskers4 · 16/10/2022 10:15

I shop in store at our local Tescos. Managed to get everything I wanted this week.

Have also done a freezer shop with Iceland (just had one substitution which was perfectly acceptable) and packed up a few things that are cheaper/nicer in Lidl (Managed to get what I wanted there as well).

MsSquiz · 16/10/2022 10:16

If the OP's slot is for November, then it makes no difference what is currently in stock or not available as that will all probably change come the day before the delivery!

elisenbrunnen · 16/10/2022 10:16

It's amazing isn't it, how everyone in the western world is used to just clicking their fingers/mouse and getting what they want, when they want it, and at rock-bottom prices. Angry
And all without giving a single thought as to how that item got there, who grew/raised/made it, or how much it costs to do so.

No, I want to flick a switch and a light/washing machine/tumble drier comes on. But i don't want to have to pay too much for it. I don't want to have to dry my washing outside (yes, I know people in flats etc can't, I'm not talking about them) or put a cardigan on. I want to have all the luxuries I have been used to, without thinking too hard about any of it - not least, the using of the world's resources so you can avoid putting on a jumper.

And as for 'why would you want courgettes in winter?' - my courgette plants, in my garden (complete with washing line) are still producing courgettes. My point exactly - we have no Idea when things are grown, or harvested. Or when they are imported from around the worl.

We could do with this energy crisis, the food shortages. We need to start thinking about how we can live more in tune with the planet.

Ticketybooboo · 16/10/2022 10:16

Tesco had nothing at all to buy when I logged on earlier to do a shop so suspect something is wrong with their online service.

FanniesFlaps · 16/10/2022 10:17

Nocaloriesinchocolate · 16/10/2022 09:49

I am ashamed to admit I thought about buying a frozen turkey yesterday - best before date was next March so Ok - just to be sure. I would have done had I had the freezer space. (Ashamed because it does seem the pinnacle of panic buying to buy a Christmas turkey in October!)

I’ve done that for years. It’s called planning and cost spreading, not panic buying. Plus I used to work in retail so studiously avoid the shops in December. I try to have all non-perishable stuff in the house by the end of November.

@Numbat2022 I think Brexit might be more relevant than Covid for this.

When all else fails, blame Brexit.

That was 2016.

Yawn.

😴

2016 was the referendum ffs, keep up!

OddsocksinmyDocs · 16/10/2022 10:20

On the other hand, Morrisons has been incredible where I am!

nannybeach · 16/10/2022 10:20

I knew Brexit would crop up. I was unable to get tomato ketchup a couple of months ago, none in any of my local shops big or small, and none of the shops knew why. Local shop, mine is Tesco express, last year they wanted £2.20 for 6 medium free range eggs. Next village Tesco £1.20, that's massive. I have found issues with Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Lidl ,suspect panic buying
Am old skool, larder and basics.

Blowthemandown · 16/10/2022 10:20

@Nowisthesummerofourdiscontent a lot of those veg are seasonal though or by the time you finalise your order they’ll have ‘new but not identical’ items

No it wasn’t. You’re thinking of the referendum.

stephaniestephanie · 16/10/2022 10:20

Definitely not doomed and there is plenty of food available (if you can afford it) however, there is no doubt that pre Covid our local supermarkets, Aldi, Lidl, Tesco, Sainsburys and Waitrose rarely, if ever had gaps on their shelves. But in the last two years, whether it is down to Brexit, Covid energy costs or War, there are marked stocking issues and gaps throughout all the stores. These vary week to week. All my friends have also noticed the change. It's not a disaster but it is noticeable. We are in the south east.

AIIyMcBeal · 16/10/2022 10:21

Northern Ireland here, so we usually have more empty shelves than the rest of the uk (protocol, borders, extra shipping etc) usually not too bad, but the past 2 weeks I’ve found that I’ve had to go to several supermarkets to get a full shop where as previously you could quite reliably get everything you needed in once place without traipsing around. Annoying marks and Spencer always seems to have stock of what I need, but I balk at doing a full weeks shop there as it’s easily £100+ compared to £70-80.

Windbeneathmybingowings · 16/10/2022 10:22

There’s been a broccoli shortage for about 5 months

Nowisthesummerofourdiscontent · 16/10/2022 10:22

@Housebook,I suspected it was a software issue impacting future orders and was being tongue in cheek. Tesco has fixed it.

ainsisoisje · 16/10/2022 10:23

Definitely a a lot of gaps particularly in Lidl, think they stock an amount daily but not the volume they used to so if you go in the evening shelves are quite bare. I understand its just supply but is quite alarming. This is north leeds.
