Tesco is out of stock for everything - we’re doomed!

Logged onto the Tesco site this morning to book a slot for early November. Everything is showing out of stock! Perhaps they know something we don’t…
Apparently they only have one type of red wine to sell (Malbec) and that’s out of stock, too. Gonna be a long and hard winter.🙁

why would you want courgettes in winter?

I think people are used to getting what they want, when they want.

Seeline · 16/10/2022 09:41

Courgettes I think are a casualty of the long hot dry summer.
My mum grows courgettes in her garden - just a couple of plants and us usually swamped with them throughout the summer and early autumn. She has had about 4 in total this year.

war in Ukraine, as well as sanctions against Russia, have resulted in a massive decline in the supply of major staple foods. This has led to a rise in food prices globally.

does no one follow the news?

Underlying that is leaving the EU. Shelves in the EU are full despite also having all the Covid and the war in Ukraine affecting them too.

It's a brexit bonus. The ex CEO of Sainsbury was clear on this on Sky news a while back.

How come some supermarkets never have shortages?

My local Asda is the same - shelves are bare - basics are gone such as rice, pasta, naan breads, tomato purées etc!

Went over the road to the Tesco and same situ there too :(

Shopped in my local asda yesterday. They had all of those things

This but to add to it, the summers heat has been bad news for lots of crops. It wasn’t just the uk that experienced prolonged high temperatures.

we’re not doomed but it follows that certain products will be in short supply.

Lidls has been like this for ages. Whole freezer sections empty. Things you could get pre covid are no more.

Like what?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 16/10/2022 09:47

@Maireas
yes, anyone complaining they cant get strawberries yet?

Triplecarbs · 16/10/2022 09:47

Lots of the shutters down along the dairy aisle yesterday in Sainsbury’s. Assumed it was for cleaning, but it was lack of stock!
So called supply issues!!
Thanks fuckwitted brexit voters! 😡

Oh probably. Or kumquats.

Cynderella · 16/10/2022 09:47

Our local supermarkets have been the same, and I'm putting it down to staff shortages rather than supplies. But maybe the hot summer has affected how much veg is being produced and imports not filling the gaps.

I always have some frozen peas, sweetcorn and sprouts in the freezer, so it hasn't been a problem when the fruit and veg section has looked so empty - there's always been stock the next day.

While I'm not advocating 'panic buying', these days more than ever, it's sensible to keep a couple of weeks supply of basics (for me that's carrots, onions, garlic, bread flour, rice, pasta, tinned tomatoes), so you can cook without shopping for a few days. Obviously, you need room to store extra food - I get that's not possible in some houses, but where it is, keeping extra supplies is sensible. It's not the same as hoarding.

Decaf filter coffee
Cheese biscuits
Washing detergent

Ooh will I be thinner <admires winter fat layer laid down in preparation>

MenopauseSucks · 16/10/2022 09:48

Must be regional.
Here in Surrey my local Morrisons & Waitrose are fully stocked & there are two Tesco's - one 5 miles, the other 17 miles - are both fine as well.
Am doing my usual shop no problems
(Famous last words...)

user1486915549 · 16/10/2022 09:48

No problems with my Tesco delivery yesterday
must be regional as our supermarkets look fully stocked

You need that now with the energy prices!

DeathMetalMum · 16/10/2022 09:48

Our shops are fine.

I often find this with online shopping, they change the product size or name very marginally and the original is listed as out of stock. I couldn't find a few products when I did an online shop recently, but they were in store when I next went in.

FanniesFlaps · 16/10/2022 09:48

BrieAndChilli · 16/10/2022 09:08

Isn’t it normal this time of the year? Don’t they swop over to Christmas stock so a lot of things appear out of stock while they change over?

That’s what I was going to say. It’s normal.

Nocaloriesinchocolate · 16/10/2022 09:49

I am ashamed to admit I thought about buying a frozen turkey yesterday - best before date was next March so Ok - just to be sure. I would have done had I had the freezer space. (Ashamed because it does seem the pinnacle of panic buying to buy a Christmas turkey in October!)

Peachspangle · 16/10/2022 09:49

Useitorloseit · 16/10/2022 08:54

Haven't been able to get a courgette from them for weeks!

You don't want one, believe me. I was there yesterday & Shock at the price....

PrivateHall · 16/10/2022 09:50

Maybe its because you are trying to to do a shop for a few weeks away? Just reserve your delivery slot and add the products nearer the time, when they know what will actually be available then. I was in Asda yesterday and it was bursting at the seams with food, stop panicking.

Rainbowcat99 · 16/10/2022 09:51

Nope all fine where I am, I had a delivery yesterday and no subs at all.
We did talk to somebody in Asda over the summer who said that their deliveries to the supermarket have dropped from daily to 3 x weekly because of petrol prices so they do have less stock on offer.
I'm generally quite flexible in what I'll buy and haven't had a problem all through Covid.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 16/10/2022 09:51

you could have bought a turkey easily, the boxes of cholates and stollen are in the shops now, people like to spread the cost

Maireas · 16/10/2022 09:51

It sounds like it's a problem with online shopping.

Queuesarasarah · 16/10/2022 09:52

I notice that Brexiteers are strangely quiet on their whole ‘project fear’ slur. Turns out it was an economically disastrous plan, just as many people said.
