I'm binging on ER... favourite episodes?

When Carter and Lucy get stabbed. Especially when Benton comes storming down the stairs. So arrogant but deep down cares so fiercely.

When Mark gets attacked in the toilets. Brutal.

Sally Field as Abby's bipolar mother. She played the role phenomenally.

The chemical spill when everyone randomly starts passing out and Carter takes charge. The first time Benton really started taking him seriously.

Love's Labour Lost. Heartbreaking and Mark was amazing.

...but the very best masterpiece of all - when Doug Ross saves Ben from the storm drain. Seriously gripping stuff.

I'm on Season 7 so I'm looking forward to Susan reappearing and meeting Pratt, who I know nothing about. I am NOT looking forward to a certain character's death 💔👓

@Latenightreader you can't be conscious if you need CPR.

ThisShitsBananas · 14/10/2022 10:07

I’ve watched it all about 15 times 🤣

My faves:

Carter and Lucy stabbing
Peter Bensons nephew is murdered
Ella overdoses on Rachel’s drugs
Deb had her baby
Pratts death 😭
Basically any Mark centric episode
The Blizzard episode in season 1 is I credible and was the first big trauma episode that got everyone hooked onto the show.

DameHelena · 14/10/2022 10:18

It's years since I watched it, but I remember one episode with a big family and friends party at (I think) Carol Hathaway's place. Think she's just started seeing Doug and she's introducing him to the family. Mainly I remember them dancing madly to the 'Tequila' song Grin

I loved ER but have never rewatched it. I might have to but DH can't stand medical dramas!

So many good episodes mentioned already, I remember the Tarantino episode being so tense and dramatic.

Occitane · 14/10/2022 10:25

I love ER, but they play the same music whenever the storyline is about Doug and Carol, and that music really annoys me!

StrawberryPot · 14/10/2022 10:30

And one that hasn’t been said- the episode with Cynthia Nixon in some kind of locked in state where she can hear and see everything around her but can’t move or speak, and the whole episode is from her perspective.

That's an amazing episode because she's talking through the first scenes really clearly and loudly and finally the camera pans to her stroke affected face and you realise the voice was in her head and she hadn't been speaking out loud at all.

I rewatched all of ER during lockdown and it hasn't lost any of its brilliance. Always knew how to surprise and shock. And the characters were amazing.

Having defibbed someone who was conscious, yes you can.

Not for long, but it can happen.

AllotmentTime · 14/10/2022 10:59

Cynthia Nixon does it all really well too, must have been a real acting challenge.

That’s at Carols wedding to Tad that never happened. Doug is sitting watching her dance and the look on his face says everything.

one moment I wept at was when Kovac was tending to the bishop, who encouraged him to open up about what happened to his family. The bishop says “I am dying. Let me take this with me” and Kovac tells his harrowing story.

Mark's big storyline. All of his episodes really, and his wedding. I loved Lucy too. Romano's arm!

Oh yes - Romano’s arm!!

It was Tag. John Taggliere (not sure won’t he spelling!) he was the doctor she was going to marry in season 1

TrashyPanda · 14/10/2022 11:45

Ooops!

DameHelena · 14/10/2022 11:53

OK. Googled him but I still don't remember him! Sorry Tag.
I haven't watched ER since the first time round, so mid-90s. Not surprising really that my memories of it are patchy.

EllieQ · 14/10/2022 12:17

Agree with lots of the episodes already mentioned - the first episode with Carol attempting suicide , Love’s Labour’s Lost where Mark is delivering a baby and it all goes wrong, the storm drain episode, Carter and Lucy being stabbed.

One that hasn’t been mentioned so far is the episode that was broadcast live - it’s in one of the earlier seasons. It was a big deal at the time as it was the first time a drama series had done a live episode (I think). The cast had to do it twice - once for the east coast broadcast, then later for the west coast. I think the plot was that the ER was being filmed for a documentary.

Another moment was Benton leaving to take a more 9-5 job so he would have more time with his son. At the time I was sad that he was leaving, but now (as a parent), I can see why he made that choice.

I’d forgotten about Mark being in the elevator and not resuscitating/ shocking the murderer, and the fact that the murderer was conscious enough to know what was happening. A chilling moment.

thinkponk48 · 14/10/2022 12:28

The episode where Benton tries to save his nephew. When he walked out and his sister saw him and just knew. So heart breaking

FadedRed · 14/10/2022 12:40

The scene with Carter and Luka in Africa, when it looked as if they were both going to be shot by insurgents.

blusteryshowersaway · 14/10/2022 12:55

Pratt dying
Mark dying and the fax

i love the scene when abbey leaves and she’s taken to the name tag wall. Nearly broke me.

FrodisCapering · 14/10/2022 13:02

I was young when it was first shown and struggling to come to terms with being bisexual. I had a big crush on Kerry Weaver (!) so my favourite storyline was when she came out.

Daisypod · 14/10/2022 13:53

@EllieQ that was season 4 episode 1 I believe. I was so excited to watch that episode I got cable tv installed just for it as it had gone to Sky from I think channel 4.

Largethighsbadeyes · 14/10/2022 13:59

I've never seen it, is it like Greys anatomy because I loved that? (early series anyway)

StrawberryPot · 14/10/2022 14:03

Mark dying and the fax

Oh the fax! I'd forgotten about that 😞😢

Frazzled2207 · 14/10/2022 14:09

Agree I find the ad breaks on All4 very annoying
BUT back in the day I was grateful for them because the tension was often just too high!

Toddlerteaplease · 14/10/2022 10:07

@Latenightreader you can't be conscious if you need CPR.

I got my episodes muddled, the one with chest compressions on a conscious person is Two Ships (the one with the plane crash). Can't comment on the accuracy of the medicine, but I have a clear memory of the episode.

tigger1001 · 14/10/2022 14:16

There are just so many good episodes of er. It really was a groundbreaking show who got the balance right between the medical side and the personal lives of the staff.

The episode when Lucy and carter get stabbed was just so emotionally charged from start to finish.

Marks death leaves me sobbing every time.

Just so many great moments
