Starting this at 980 on the other thread because it's late and I might miss the tipping point. We're moving fast at the moment, thanks all for the analysis, insight and company

Would they say anything different?!

That does explain why he went to the US!

Do you mean you suspect what Wallace says, about it being a 'malfunction' isn't true?

The is precisely why this war needs to end sooner rather than later. A direct hit then and we are looking at WW3.

I wander if this was part of his trip to Washington. By the sounds of it the missile wasn't aimed at the RAF jet but it was released while they were communicating with it.

Precisely. The only positive I can take from this is that the comms are still open and active between the parties involved. Thank God for cool heads.

It is perfectly credible the missile left the fighter by accident (switching error by the pilot, engineering error).

I can remember at least two such instances in the RAF (both associated with dodgy wiring).

As long as the missile isn't locked up or similarly active then they usually either just fall earthwards or head off in a random direction..not great in the circumstances.

Strange that this happened 3 weeks ago and were only just hearing about it. For the shit show if this Tory government I do have and fondness for Ben Wallace and his cool head.

I would suspect this is fairly normal, gives them time to discuss with allies and assess what actually went on.

Igotjelly · 20/10/2022 13:02

Does just show how tightly genuine information is being kept. Not a sniff of this on Twitter.

Not strange at all.

It certainly wouldn't have been on Twitter within minutes.

I'd guess a fair bit of analysis will have been done of what was recorded on-board the Rivet Joint aircraft, and then cool heads in MoD and elsewhere will have spent time deciding if to go public and when.

Hancox432 · 20/10/2022 13:04

Interesting Analysis from a retired RAF vice Marshall on sky news. He believes the Russians will pull out of Kherson, And consolidate the Donbass for the winter with the view on negotiations which most experts believe if they will happen will be during the winter months.

Fair enough, do you think this would have been the main topic of Wallace's visit to washington?

No. But they couldnt say anything different. The alternative is Russia deliberately fired in the vincity of a British aircraft. That's diplomatically impossible for us to say and its also an admission that we have been directly threatened!

Putin still believes the energy crisis in Europe and Ukraine will focus minds.

No idea but if the evidence points to the missile being effectively dumped accidently I'd guess not.

I could not agree more. I am just aghast at this entire thing. Christ knows what our allies, and indeed Putin must think.

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 20/10/2022 13:50

How mortifying.

Anyone see Sir Stephen Walker's interview 😅 he could hardly contain himself.

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 20/10/2022 13:53

Sorry! Charles!

prettybird · 20/10/2022 13:58

I did. He was on the point of tears with the sheer frustration and disappointment.

notimagain · 20/10/2022 14:10

BTW it's possible we have an explanation for those two Typhoons visibly escorting the RAF Rivet Joint over the Black Sea a couple of days back......

Yeh agreed.

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 20/10/2022 14:18

How embarrassing! The cost of borrowing started to full once the market heard an announcement was imminent. Oh I'd be so mortified.

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 20/10/2022 14:27

Russian army doing what they do best:

We have reports of looting all over Kherson Oblast, and not only West of the Dnipro river. It is just lawlessness.

twitter.com/tendar/status/1583052103777660929?s=61&t=53GrBOeJniWgLn7CStgxUw

Wasn't it a 10 year prison sentence for looting that Putin announced recently?

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 20/10/2022 14:39

Apparently the city is very quiet today. A lot of people have gone. So there will be lots of empty houses to loot

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 20/10/2022 14:44

Report of Russians loading up fire trucks with looted goods and taking them over the Dnipo.
I hope this isn't to prevent fires being put out when they inevitably start bombing Kherson:
