My house is 18.5 degrees and I'm COLD!

I cannot afford the heating on yet. I have fluffy socks, pjs, hoody and a throw but my feet and nose are still chilly! It's hardly the arctic but I'm really not looking forward to 'proper' winter if this is how I feel in Autumn!

I may be talking bollocks (I usually am) but I think when there's a dampness in the air, as there seems to be now, it feels colder, even at the same temperature.
I had my coat on today when walking the dog. It was 16.5 degrees so normally I'd just have a long sleeved top on, but it felt colder today.
When it's drier it doesn't feel so cold (to me).
Maybe.

I would agree with this (don't know if it's scientific or not lol) but I do feel colder if it's damp than I do at the same temperature when it's not damp

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 27/09/2022 20:51

It’s wind that makes it cold too.

Cold wind round me.

Sophieagain1984 · 27/09/2022 20:51

Long sleeved thermal vest and long johns make a huge difference

Msgrieves · 27/09/2022 20:51

It's 9° here too, thought it felt a bit chilly. I'm OK with a thin hoodie on though, think peri is upon me.

This is so utterly stupid isn't it? People across a wealthy, first world country sitting about feeling cold and dreading Winter.

I have a cold atm which is actually helping because I'm running hotter than normal. I think being cold is such an utterly miserable way to live.

I am going to wait until October but after that I'm having the fucking heating on.

Completely agree. I'm fucking sick of it already. I bet the tories aren't sitting in the cold.

Chicheguevara · 27/09/2022 20:52

I work from home and it’s 18.5 degrees. I put my buff on today. Just that buff under my jumper really seemed to help. I always wear my warm slippers if there is an R in the month.
I make sure that I get up and prance about the living room, every hour, or I stiffen up.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 27/09/2022 20:53

What is a buff?

Minimalme · 27/09/2022 20:54

@teaandtoastwithmarmite I imagine all Tories have a large fire lit in the snug and shut off the west wing for the Winter Grin

This. I work fucking hard, earn a half decent wage, but I’m a single parent so too scared to put the heating on when the kids aren’t here so as not to waste money. It shouldn’t be like this. Tory bastards.

OutDamnedSpot · 27/09/2022 20:56

I’ll be honest though. I don’t really know what labour would do differently. What is the ‘better’ economic answer?

Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight · 27/09/2022 20:57

I find that if I haven’t eaten for ages I get much colder.

Having said that it’s 18 degrees in here and in order to feel warm I am wearing long johns under my trousers, woolly socks, slippers, then on my top half a long sleeve cotton top, a proper wool roll neck jumper, a scarf, a padded body warmer topped off with a outdoor thickness fleece jacket.

Oh and then I have a throw over my legs too and a hot cup of tea.

OddBoots · 27/09/2022 20:58

I keep telling myself I just feel cold as I need to acclimatise, I m hopeful I will get used to it.

user7817811 · 27/09/2022 20:59

Go and do some hoovering, it always warms me up!

Autumninnewyork · 27/09/2022 21:00

You need merino wool base layer (vest and leggings) and a hot water bottle as well

Your heating bills would be the same under labour, you do understand what’s caused this and it’s not a Tory policy right?

LowbrowVictoriana · 27/09/2022 21:01

I'm going to change the sheets to warm up!
Might even get into bed afterwards.

Lunabun · 27/09/2022 21:02

17 degrees here and shivering!!! Admittedly I'm not really doing much to combat it so I won't complain too much.

But I had my heating set to 17 most all of last winter, and I don't remember it feeling this bad!

StillMedusa · 27/09/2022 21:03

I have a hot water bottle but having spent the last few weeks with a fairly nasty 2nd degree burn being treated after my old one burst ...I'm a bit nervous of it!
Our living room opens into the conservatory with no divider so the room gets cold fast (the thermostat is in the hall which is warmer so I suspect it's about 15 degrees in here!)

My pelvic floor won't take star jumps /anything high impact so a work out might be risky Grin
I think I'm going to have to buy some serious thermals!

Exactly what I did this morning when it was 16 degrees inside! Worked a treat, I had to take a couple of layers off and now the house looks fresher too!

Whowhatwherewhenwhy1 · 27/09/2022 21:04

14 degrees in our house. Miserable but thats life for the foreseeable.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 27/09/2022 21:05

Its 9 degrees outside and was 17.5 degrees in my lounge. Kids were cold when we got back from rainbows so they ate dinner on the sofa and i put the oil filled radiator on to warm the room up it went up to 21 degrees after 30mins so turned it off and we all just snuggled under blankets watching tv until bedtime. Kids are all snuggled up in bed now and im sat under my heated throw as the temp went back down to 18.5 and i refuse to put the radiator on just for me

Chloefairydust · 27/09/2022 21:08

I would suggest an electric heated throw, they cost pennies to run…

I’m following the heat the person not the house motto for as long as I can get away with it this year…

We just can’t afford the heating, with the rising living costs.

HorribleHerstory · 27/09/2022 21:08

It’s 5 degrees outside here and raining, I just walked to the shops with just a long sleeved top on which was somewhat of an error but it’s only about 500 metres so I thought it would be fine.

On the upside, it’s made the house feel warmer now I’m back inside and under a blanket. I think it’s about 14 indoors at the mo

JanesLittleGirl · 27/09/2022 21:09

The central heating thermostat says that the temperature is 18. I'm wearing fleece-lined leggings under moleskin trousers, thick socks, UGG boots ,a vest, a long sleeved tee and a cashmere roll-neck and I still feel cold. DH and DD are both barefoot in jeans and tees and are perfectly comfortable. I guess that I should have been born in the tropics.

Dannexe · 27/09/2022 21:10

Seven degrees outside here. I’ve put a cat on my feet
