My house is 18.5 degrees and I'm COLD!

I cannot afford the heating on yet. I have fluffy socks, pjs, hoody and a throw but my feet and nose are still chilly! It's hardly the arctic but I'm really not looking forward to 'proper' winter if this is how I feel in Autumn!

Currently very glad that I don’t seem to feel the cold (I’m always too warm and never change to a winter duvet!) as our boiler is currently out of action awaiting a part which is on back-order. It’s going to give us a chance to get used to how we’ll keep warm without it over winter.

We’re very lucky to have an aga in the kitchen so generally congregate there in winter months for meals etc and with a drying rack above, washing won’t be a problem.

Also have a log burner in the living room and that will go on when the evenings get really cold. Again luckily we’ve access to endless fuel for that.

My plan is to keep the heating off for the winter / as long as possible. We don’t often use it tbh anyway, and whilst we could afford it, I am prioritising overpaying the mortgage as much as we can for the next few years as I think that might make things easier in the long run.

I hope everyone stays warm. Layering up before you start to feel cold is the key (learned over many years of camping trips).

We sat under a blanket on the sofa, I had wool socks on and wore slippers. I had a hot water bottle that tipped me into "toasty" and that meant I got off to sleep alright. I feel like, in my house, we're learning a lot about how we used gas, for instance OH might be planning to make something so would set a pan on the hob, but then he'd faff about for a half hour, the water would halve, he'd top it up. Or he'd warm the shower for 20 min before getting in. There are some habits that needed to change.

Those who are talking about 18.5 on a summers day, isn't there an explanation as to why 18 in July feels different to 18 in December? I'll have a Google.

Just did a little Google. I was talking crap, ignore me, it seems it was just about acclimatisation.

Dannexe · 28/09/2022 08:13

Its also about humidity and direct sunlight

I think we always feel the cold more in autumn than we do at the same temperature in spring because we’re coming off the back of warm temperatures.

Today was the first day I needed to wipe down all the insides of the (single glazed) windows though and on the school run I noticed most of the houses on the roads (almost all will also be single glazed too) seemed to have the same problem too. Not a big deal but just a sigh that that’s every morning for the next six months or so then…

Don’t think I’ve ever put the heating on in September so obviously this won’t be the year I start, but it is noticeably colder now. 12oC outside. I have a window wide open for ventilation so it can’t be that bad!

I feel it in spring more. Icy winds in March.
