My house is 18.5 degrees and I'm COLD!

I cannot afford the heating on yet. I have fluffy socks, pjs, hoody and a throw but my feet and nose are still chilly! It's hardly the arctic but I'm really not looking forward to 'proper' winter if this is how I feel in Autumn!

I'm snuggled up under my Teddy Bear bedding from Wilkos, with an electric heatpad (same size as a hot water bottle but no boiling water risk) and huge fluffy socks. It will soon be time to dig out the (fake) Oodies and fleece lined leggings. Last year we made a few small insulating changes (curtain on inside of front door, draught excluder for living room, foil behind radiators) so hopefully it will help us stay fairly warm at minimum expense.

I think we got used to it being hot during the Summer and became acclimatised.

We will get used to it being cold too. ☹️

If you get off a plane in a hot country it seems super hot. After a day or two at that temperature you get used to it

I never do. I was so, so cold all last winter, because i work in a school and the fucking windows had to be open. Home wasn't much warmer either, so I've been dreading it. I hate being hunched up and in pain.

I will, however, go running in the shittiest of weather.

Dannexe · 27/09/2022 22:03

Just checked the heating and the house is at 17 upstairs (so it will be lower downstairs) so it isn’t surprising it feels on the cool side.

SD1978 · 27/09/2022 22:09

18 is ok if you're doing things. I haven't had the heating on above that(not in the UK) all winter. House is usually about 6 degrees when I get up in the morning, and I turn it on. If you're doing things, 18:is great. Watching television and 18 sucks. I get cold hands and nose. I hate a cold nose!

StillMedusa · 27/09/2022 22:09

Scianel The hot water bottle was only a year old! (My kids get me a new one every Xmas as I use one every night)
I guess it had a weak spot... I'd just filled it (yes from the just boiled kettle...won't do that again) put it on the sofa and it literally exploded, taking an awful lot of skin off my arm and elbow. It was excruciating and a miserable few weeks having it dressed!
I think it was just unlucky as I've had some that lasted years, but a 5 yr old one should definitely be replaced.. the doctor told me they do have a shelf life!

I think we are going to have a really bad winter, it's bitter already I'm dreading it. X

coldcaff · 27/09/2022 22:18

I'm really cold tonight! Looked at the hive app to see the temperature and it said 16.9... I was expecting it to say a fair bit lower than that!

We’re having a slightly warmer than average autumn and that’s forecast to continue during October.

HighlandPony · 27/09/2022 22:32

Mine is 12. I’m Scottish. I don’t mind it.

Chickdaft · 27/09/2022 22:50

As above, 12 is ok. Have 15 at work and that’s fine. Did put the multi fuel on tonight and place is roasting. Leaving the oil a wee whiley yet in NW Scotland……

piecesofham · 27/09/2022 23:00

For my kids I have fleecy pyjamas, 13.5 tog duvets and teddy bedding in winter. Also for this year thermals for under their clothes/ onesies if needed.
The hoodie blankets from Brentfords are amazing, you can get them on Online Home Shop and they're the best, there are other fleece hoodie blankets but theirs are brilliant, I bought them for our older family members who feel the cold a few years ago and they love them! My children also have one each and they had the pyjamas made the same last year, there are other fleecy pyjamas that are scratchy and not warm on the inside but the proper ones are full on!

milkysmum · 27/09/2022 23:01

I've had the heating on for an hour in the morning and a couple of hours at night for over a week now. Tonight I also lit the log burner in the living room as I still felt a bit chilly..

Fatballs · 27/09/2022 23:07

16.7 here. I’ve gone to bed.

My husband is downstairs watching TV. Wearing shorts.

Update, the cat just farted. Reviewing plans of more cats for warmth Envy

@Orchidflower1
Yes, I did this the other day. I'd cooked in the oven, when it was switched off it was a shame to waste all that heat, so pulled the airer into the kitchen and opened the oven door.
This thread will be full of economy heating hacks, thankyou OP and other contributors.

Gloriosity · 27/09/2022 23:21

A bit like the oven door tip, which i also do, I’ve moved my condenser dryer into the far corner of my living room 😂I wash clothes first thing and put them on the airer, then finish them in the dryer for half an hour early evening and the dryer heats the living room, everything smells like clean washing and i still get soft clothes!

Then electric underblankets on the beds for 20 mins at bedtime. It’s ok so far, I was cold middle of the day today but wrapped a giant furry blanket round my legs out of sight of my Teams meetings and drank a lot of tea.

treadcarefully · 27/09/2022 23:32

16.3 in our house tonight. I succumbed and put heating on for an hour. Checked thermostat after the hour was up and it was 17.3! So only a degree warmer but the house felt so much warmer.
Think it's getting warmer here beginning of next week, upto 19 degrees so that's something to look forward to!😂

High5InALowRide · 27/09/2022 23:34

14.5 in my bedroom but I'm in bed so ok! Had hooded fleecy blanket on whilst WFH though today.

JML001 · 27/09/2022 23:36

Heated throws? These are new to me, anyone recommend any in particular?

I have a relaxwell brand one that's a couple of years old and toasty. Ugly beige colour as my dad bought it but you can't have it all Grin
Google suggests they have much nicer colours still bitter

mondaytosunday · 27/09/2022 23:47

18.5? That's the max I'd set my hearing on! If you are freezing surely that can't be right?
But get a plug in efficient electric heater that will heat up the room you are in if you don't want to turn on the central heating.

TheTeenageYears · 27/09/2022 23:54

Fluffy onesie & fluffy slipper socks so no gaps. Same effect as a blanket but you aren't afraid to move for fear of freezing when you move from the sofa.

I got the Bauer Professional Heated throw from Amazon. It was £50, but it is really cosy, and barely costs anything when it's on (my smart meter stays green anyway!)

Cantthinkofanewnameatm · 28/09/2022 07:11

Hot water bottle. Put it against your back if you’re sitting under a throw, surprising the difference it makes.

megletthesecond · 28/09/2022 07:14

That is cold unless you're dashing about doing housework.
I'm fleeced up and it's 20° and I'm still not comfortable.
