I'm genuinely astonished Truss is still lying low

#whereisLuzTruss is no1 trending on Twitter.

Lonelycrab · 28/09/2022 14:38

Liz even but you get the idea

DuncinToffee · 28/09/2022 14:38

Rishi Sunak, David Davis, Sajid Javid & Mel Stride all confirm they’re not attending the conference

And Tory MPs are starting to air their objections

ClaudineClare · 28/09/2022 14:38

Honestly, sometimes I wonder if I have lost my mind and all this is some sort of prolonged hallucination. It is unbelievable.

tobee · 28/09/2022 14:43

As there a link or statement to this re non attendees?

tobee · 28/09/2022 14:46

Hmm. I've only just seen that the problem with some messages not appearing properly after quoting is only an issue for the app.

Progrund on Sunak

EXC: Rishi Sunak will not attend Conservative Party conference. He’ll be in Yorkshire instead
Ally says former chancellor will give Truss all the space she needs to own the moment

Jon Craig
Tory “big beasts” appear to be boycotting next week’s party conference. Rishi Sunak, David Davis, Sajid Javid & Mel Stride all confirm they’re not going.

Thanks @DuncinToffee

That reply saying

"Not Mel Stride!

Conference is ruined now."

Made me laugh very loudly!

Roussette · 28/09/2022 15:09

Former BofE Policy Maker says "we are now in chaos" and "we've no idea where Liz Truss is, and we've no idea where the Chancellor is"

Fucking hell. This is really, really bad. This is the worst crisis I’ve seen in my life time. Where the fuck are the grown ups?

Roussette · 28/09/2022 15:22

And delegates are pulling out the Conservative party conference, my DD tells me. Sunak definitely has. Sajid Javid has. Ditto David Davis and Mel Stride

Headlines in Guardian... "With the Tories looking like death cult muppets, all the Labour leader needed to do in his big speech was not sound like a complete halfwit"

But instead of that... he nailed it.

I would like our old friend to come on here and talk about her post when Truss won... saying LT was a competent woman of steel

🚨NEW🚨
On the @bankofengland intervention:
Am told the BoE were responding to a “run dynamic” on pension funds - a wholesale equivalent of the run which destroyed Northern Rock.
Had they not intervened, there would have been mass insolvencies of pension funds by THIS AFTERNOON.

ShockSad

Does this mean that they have things under control for now? (Or at least until
Truss & Kwarteng come out at Conference to say they are sticking with the plan.)

Blossomtoes · 28/09/2022 15:30

Surely they’ll cancel the conference? They can’t submit themselves to several days of intense media and public scrutiny, can they?

Roussette · 28/09/2022 15:31

From Emily Maitlis

@maitlis
Just spoke to a Tory MP who told me “we ( Conservative party) are just a protectionist racket right now - a gang of marauding ambition - not a serious party

I really hope so but who knows.

Notonthestairs · 28/09/2022 15:42

If they cancel conference they will look panicked and they'll have to recall Parliament because they can't hide out any longer.

I suspect they'd rather take their chances at Conference than in Parliament.

Rock and hard place. What the hell are they going to say at conference that anyone would listen to? At least if they were in the Commons they’d give the impression (however misleading) that they realise what a mess they’ve made.

tobee · 28/09/2022 15:50

I thought Kwarteng was supposed to have met with Bank of England on Monday or Tuesday? Did he go? What happened?

DuncinToffee · 28/09/2022 15:50

Beth Rigby

Quick update from Treasury sources on chancellor and the economic plan. Told CX not resigning and there will be "no reversal of policy"

tobee · 28/09/2022 15:51

Marvellous

Blossomtoes · 28/09/2022 15:52

I hope the Chancellor’s security is tight.

Notonthestairs · 28/09/2022 15:52

They'll give more hints of supply side reforms (planning deregulation, employment deregulation, investment zones, fracking, pork markets).

I doubt the media will get close enough to get questions in. JRM, Coffrey & Cleverly will handle all media interviews.

verdantverdure · 28/09/2022 16:00

It is actually incredible that the UK central bank has had to step in to protect the UK from the actions of the UK's own government! I mean, just think about that for a moment: Our country needs protecting from our government.
