Hopefully I've done this so it works.

How, how can they not have predicted that this would happen? There's no extraneous factors here, the reaction was immediate!

Truss probably hiding with covers pulled over her head.

It's pretty clear this is intentional harm to profit a tiny tiny minority

ClaudineClare · 28/09/2022 16:09

I really would like to see @janiiejones view on this mess. The pension fund issue is just astounding.

tobee · 28/09/2022 16:10

How can it be otherwise?

tobee · 28/09/2022 16:10

Sorry that was to @Chevyimpala67

It is actually incredible that the UK central bank has had to step in to protect the UK from the actions of the UK's own government! I mean, just think about that for a moment: Our country needs protecting from our government.

A time to be thankful for the BOE's independence.

I'm pretty sure The Treasury did predict this would happen. That's why they sacked Tom Scholar.

I don't think this bunch like reality interfering with their ideology.

Namecalling and whataboutery is all they have left.

Spot on

Yep.

The answer is usually the most obvious, despite how incredible it may seem.

itsgettingweird · 28/09/2022 16:14

Anyone else noticed the BBC seem to be giving Labour a really hard time about their policies - yet don't seem to challenge the actual government in charge over their actual policies that are currently running.

Radio 4 has been pissing me off this week Grin

I'm glad I'm not near retirement age tbh.

There must be people near retirement really really worried right now

I won't villify them but the thing is they voted for Johnson, for this circus, they should own that. They should be the ones holding their party to account.

The only advice I can give is not to vote Tory next time.

TBF I voted for him too.

I regret it now.

Massively!

They have probably been taking advice from a few spotty-faced fast streamers fresh from Oxbridge. No experienced civil servant would have thought any of this ok, I'm certain.

Notonthestairs · 28/09/2022 16:17

Well now we know what Truss has been doing.

Had a phone conversation with 🇬🇧 PM @trussliz. The UK has always been among the leaders in supporting Ukraine. We expect London’s leadership in reaction to Russian sham referenda as well. Defense and financial aid to Ukraine must be enhanced in response

So BoE action is Quantative Easing?
(Getting a crash course in economics here)

Keir Starmer sounded so sensible and adult this morning on R4 Today (at around 0815). We need a General Election.

This is the interview I mentioned above where they gave him such a hard time yet he was clear and concise and honest.

I thought they needed to stop talking and let him speak.

Yeah.

I bet you do.

Not like his history as a journalist, mayor of London, racist, homophobe, misogynist, xenophobe or cheating spouse could have given you any idea of his true character, eh?

Gosh... yes...

And #porkmarkets and #WhereisthePM is trending on Twitter.

ClaudineClare · 28/09/2022 16:25

I sorry, itisgettingweird, but it is true that anyone voting for Johnson knew what they were getting. Even if you had your eyes and ears shut to all the evidence before 2019, his illegal prorogation of Parliament showed you who he is.

Using the Johnson playbook is not going to wash this time.

2 years to go. Not happy.

Blossomtoes · 28/09/2022 16:36

It won’t be two years. Two months is pushing it.

We are completely at the mercy of the Conservative Party on that point though aren't we?

Blossomtoes · 28/09/2022 17:04

We are. But it seems backbenchers are saying they won’t vote any of Truss’ legislation through, how long could she survive that? Apparently letters are going in to the 1922 already.

Notonthestairs · 28/09/2022 17:04

They really are stuck now.
They can't come out and reiterate their plans because the markets will punish them (and us) again.
They can't u-turn because that would be the end for Truss & Kwarteng and as importantly the ERG Cabinet members (pretty much all).

So they say nothing and look hopelessly unable to lead the country.
