Will Truss show herself before the weekend?

Hannan is claiming the markets are collapsing because Starmer are doing well. It's utter drivel.

I am genuinely shocked Truss hasnt been out and about trying to talk up her budget and to draw some attention from the Labour conference. They've disappeared in to a hole.

The Telegraph this morning is an utter disgrace. It’s used a conference photo of a guy with a red Mohican and a woman with a fag in her mouth and the comment pieces are skewed as all get out. The business pages, however, are telling the truth but how many of its readers will get to them?

BoreOfWhabylon · 28/09/2022 09:40

There's a thread of despairing Tory voters in AIBU wanting to jump ship.
They could do with some encouragement I think, not vilification

DuncinToffee · 28/09/2022 09:58

I won't villify them but the thing is they voted for Johnson, for this circus, they should own that. They should be the ones holding their party to account.

The only advice I can give is not to vote Tory next time.

DuncinToffee · 28/09/2022 10:12

The madness summed up

All is fine in the Conservative Party.

What a bloody mess.

"The Bank of England is now buying long dated government bonds, having said last week it was selling government bonds, to temper financial instability. The rise in government bond yields was causing liquidity problems for some financial institutions - and risked “a disruption…

of the flow of credit to the economy”. This is an emergency response to a very real crisis - which was set to worsen the cost of living debacle. If I hear anyone else say these are just teething problems with a bold economic reform plan…

I will scream. This is an unholy mess. The Treasury is underwriting this Bank of England operation and indemnifying its potential losses.

DuncinToffee · 28/09/2022 11:42

This isn’t unprecedented but it’s the sort of thing that happened after 9/11 and the global financial crash - absolutely astonishing that this is a result of government action…

Notonthestairs · 28/09/2022 11:44

Surely they'll have to U turn? This can't go on.

DuncinToffee · 28/09/2022 11:53

That would be the sensible thing to do, instead Truss is hiding and her flying monkeys are busy blaming a future Labour government.

DuncinToffee · 28/09/2022 11:58

If you want to get away from this shit show for a bit, the comments on 'where is Liz Truss' and Ashcroft's 'a currency trader told me' are good way to do that Smile

Notonthestairs · 28/09/2022 12:03

"Is the currency trader still in the room, my Lord? Can you still see him?"

Im Am Not An Economist but just listened to one on LBC. Apparently the reason the BoE has taken action is because things like pension funds and insurers are now at risk of going under?!?

Notonthestairs · 28/09/2022 12:18

Yes that is what I've read too Bore.

I've read that Truss will be under pressure to change Chancellor - Javid? Gove?

But I see Truss & Kwarteng as a package. They've been in step together. Besides I don't see the ERG cabinet letting go of control over this - RM, Braverman etc will be digging in.

"Just spoke to a Tory MP who told me “we ( Conservative party) are just a protectionist racket right now - a gang of marauding ambition - not a serious party”.

So BoE action is Quantative Easing?
(Getting a crash course in economics here)

Keir Starmer sounded so sensible and adult this morning on R4 Today (at around 0815). We need a General Election.

Does anyone know when the Tory leader last did an indepth interview for the Today programme?

tobee · 28/09/2022 12:39

Presuming you are saying when "a" Tory leader?

Notonthestairs · 28/09/2022 12:44

So they were planning on reversing QE but have had to change track as far as I can see.

IpanemaChic · 28/09/2022 12:51

I also listened to KS this morning on radio 4. It’s the first time I’ve felt hopeful about the UK in a very long time.

countrygirl99 · 28/09/2022 12:58

On September 22nd you could get 409 Zimbabwe dollars to the pound, now it's 385. A 6% fall.
Let that sink in - a 6% fall against the Zimbabwe dollar.

Chevyimpala67 · 28/09/2022 13:00

I'm just so tired of it all. Bone tired.

Since 2015 this country has made consistently poor choices, both the electorate and the elected governments.

Ds1 looks to me for hope and I try. I do. I lived through the 80s under Thatcher fgs but everything I predicted/feared has come to pass - in one way or another.

I'm a proactive sort. But I'm at a loss atm. What can I do to further insulate my family from the acts of the ruling elite?

I'm at the stage of thinking do I move our savings? Put them into euros or dollars? Overpay the mortgage? Stop spending?

It's all such a bloody mess and most of it was avoidable.

I am increasingly optimistic the end is in sight, although I do feel down today.
The Iraq War hangs around Tony Blair, The financial crisis around Gordon Brown.

I increasingly think that the Tories are done for for many years.

tobee · 28/09/2022 13:10

I don't trust the electorate.

I don't trust Tory MPs to do anything to sort this before it's waaaaaaaay too late.

And if, by a miracle, a GE happened very soon, and, another miracle, they had the sense to send this lot packing, that they would understand that the huge, devastating damage caused by the actions of these criminals who've been allowed to absolutely ruin this country systematically over the last 12 years will take years to begin to recover.

tobee · 28/09/2022 13:10

That's the electorate in my last paragraph btw

Notonthestairs · 28/09/2022 14:23

Starmer has called for Parliament to be recalled which is the right move.

I'm genuinely astonished Truss is still lying low.

Badenoch is in the US giving a speech promoting investment in the UK 😬

Cornettoninja · 28/09/2022 14:34

This has similar tones to when the WHO publicly admonished the governments initial response to covid.
