Thanks for the explanation AdamRyan

I like both Lisa Nandy and Angela Rayner.

Lots of voters - female and male , and other- agree with Nandy* , especially younger ones so I am not sure it is the massive own goal many on MN think it is....

*not making this up, plentiful research does show this...

"Truss was warned about this but unlike other countries has taken no action."

She also claimed there would be no rationing.

“Knowing what a woman is” comes way down your list of priorities when you can’t pay your mortgage, heat your house or feed your kids. It might have been an electoral issue a year ago, it won’t be when we go to the polling station - which can’t be soon enough. Never thought I’d agree with Dorries on anything.

I agree
Try writing that on the gender board though and loads of posters will tell you that you are wrong

borntobequiet · 06/10/2022 16:05

We should be wary of politicians and political parties that have been overtaken by ideology of whatever ilk.
I will vote Labour at the next election for only the second time in the last 50 years or so ( Liberal/LibDem previously). It doesn’t mean to say I don’t have grave reservations about some of their policies, and I shall make my views clear on the doorstep or wherever.

Piggywaspushed · 06/10/2022 16:06

Yes, I agree. We can't agree with every single thing a political party (or people within it) promises, says or believes. It's not possible.

No way am I going anywhere near the Gender board! It’s bad enough when some of its posters venture on to Chat and AIBU.

countrygirl99 · 06/10/2022 16:37

I do occasionally point out that the Taliban know what a woman is too. The point generally gets ignored.

Hahahaha 😂

tobee · 06/10/2022 16:56

Plenty of Labour supporters are gender critical and it’s a genuine problem for them. But they fear being able to speak up. Political parties can say what they like but if they want to appeal to the voters they risk losing a key demographic. Currently this is happening in the Tory party; appealing to members and some activists rather than to the people who they rely on get them into power.

AdamRyan · 06/10/2022 16:57

I'm actually a complete GC feminist myself. My views are the Tories know exactly what a woman is and use it to shaft us.
So many conservative policies disproportionately harm women, they have presided over the effective decriminalisation of rape (especially galling after all the progress Keir Starmer made as DPP), think nothing of having a leader with a track record of treating women abominable (Johnson) and various MPs with allegations of sexual and domestic violence against them.

I really really don't get the mindset where any woman would voluntarily vote for that.

Sorry for ranting. It infuriates me in case we end up with a conservative government effectively due to a protest vote (a bit like the boomers who voted Brexit out of a sense of injustice from the previous referendum in 1976, rather than because they actually wanted brexit)

DuncinToffee · 06/10/2022 17:05

We have said it on these threads before, 'knowing what a woman is' has become the new 'but Corbyn'.
They said the same about Trump and now look at the abortion laws there.

On a slightly different note, has everyone seen the brave women in Iran?

tobee · 06/10/2022 17:06

I wish Labour hadn't gone down the route they have done (and LibDem).

But the Tories are not the answer to feminist prayers either.

People who say this issue is purely left or right are doing so for nefarious purposes.

And, of course, it's the republican far right who are trying to control women with their anti abortion views.

Yes. Can't imagine what life is like in Iran for women and other similar countries.

This video by Guardian writerm George Monbiot is a fascinating sum up of Liz Truss and who she stands for, and it's not the British people.

I know that mumsnet generally isn't keen, but I think that lisa Nandy came across well today on sky. Kay is a tough one to crack , but she held her own i thought.
I know her views don't go down well on this forum ( or haven't done historically)

She was on BBC 4 this morning and she held her own there as well.

All they kept saying is how their borrowing etc would be half the current governments and how do they think that's good.

I kept thinking. It's easy maths.

Half is smaller!

She also was very clear they'd be making the money up through corporation tax/ windfall tax etc.

Then they'd repeat - how are your finances any better and how will you make the money you need to borrow.

I wanted to yell at the radio "she's answered that question about 5 times!"

Blossomtoes · 06/10/2022 17:44

I’m getting very tired of the aggressive interview techniques the BBC uses with opposition politicians on the rare occasions they give them any air time. What a shame she couldn’t say “I’ve explained that four times now, are you deaf or stupid?”

the80sweregreat · 06/10/2022 17:59

Kay was tough on Lisa Nandy, but at least she did let her speak.
Often they speak over people , it is frustrating regardless of your politics!

Plus those who get so exercised about it, don't actually seem to be able to agree on what they mean by the statement either.

That graph is very interesting

I watched the Monbiot clip and then read this -

NEW: Very concerning news from NHS board meeting this afternoon - health service is facing a £21bn funding black hole over next couple of years, putting core provision of cancer, GP and mental health services under threat @theipaper

This is over and above existing spending efficiencies. Of course the 1p rise in NI was intended to plug these gaps for the NHS and social care.

So what is the plan? Borrow more money or run services down?

After watching Monbiot you can't help but think the plan is to run it down and sell it off.

Notonthestairs · 06/10/2022 20:55

The Big Issue reported that shes been wearing that dress since 2018.
