Forget accountability

Thérèse Coffey is ditching the government’s long-promised white paper on health inequalities despite the 19-year gap in life expectancy between rich and poor

But Jeremy Corbyn.
Keir had a beer.
Boris knows what a woman is.
Starmer's boring.
The markets are scared of a Labour government.

That list will need a thread of its own soon!

They might not like u turns , but they seem to like shredding machines on anything remotely controversial.

Blackford on LBC

🔥Wow. OBR writing to Blackford totally torpedoes govt’s there-was-no-time defence. Says they gave forecasts to Kwarteng on his first day and offered to update them with any measures to be published alongside mini-budget but “were not commissioned”. ~AA

I thought we were told that Blackford was going to disappear into obscurity following Boris around shouting Resign?

Downnotdown · 29/09/2022 19:33

Very refreshing to hear one Tory MP talking sense and saying it like it is.

Sir Charles Walker was on C4 News this evening saying that the government need to show 'its workings-out', like they do at school, so we can all see how they think this is supposed to help the country. He also said they need to stop blaming journalists for not understanding it and stop blaming other world-wide events.

I agree; they need to own it.

In February this year Walker announced his intention to stand down at the next GE so he obviously feels comfortable to speak freely. I just wish other Tory MPs would find a bit of back-bone and admit what they really think. I can't see it happening though, but I will be watching the audience closely at the party conference.

jgw1 · 29/09/2022 19:45

I have seen it suggested that if the yougov polling is correct that would leave the Tories with less than 100 seats.

I shouldn't share Sturgeon's tweet then, but for the balance

Hard to know what to say to the suggestion I should mirror policies (tax cuts for richest) that have sunk the £, crashed the mortgage market, pushed pensions to the brink, imperilled public services & forced a Bank of England bailout. What planet is the PM living on?

What That YouGov poll could look like in a General Election:

LAB: 498 (+296)
CON: 61 (-304)
SNP: 36 (-12)
LDM: 29 (+18)
PLC: 4 (=)
Others: 2 (+2)
GRN: 1 (=)

NI: 18

Labour Majority of 346

Well I imagine Truss will use her "best ignored" approach for that too.

It's spot on!!!!

Fucking hell. They must be absolutely bricking it. I’d just call an election now if I was Truss and save myself a world of pain.

Notonthestairs · 29/09/2022 21:27

Liz Truss will hold emergency talks with the head of Britain’s independent fiscal watchdog after failing to dampen panic in the financial markets or shore up support from Tory MPs on her radical economic plan.
In a highly unusual move, the prime minister will meet the Office for Budget Responsibility’s (OBR) Richard Hughes on Friday, along with her chancellor, Kwasi Kwarteng, before being presented with a first draft of its full fiscal forecasts next week.

One government insider said the OBR meeting was “like trying to read the manual after you’ve broken the thing”

www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/sep/29/liz-truss-to-hold-emergency-talks-with-obr-after-failing-to-calm-markets

Too late.

DuncinToffee · 29/09/2022 21:32

Faisal Islam is saying the same as Blackford

NEW

OBR confirms on record my story from 9 days ago that it prepared a draft forecast for new Chancellor waiting for him on first day at Treasury 6th September, and that an offer for a legally compliant forecast to accompany the mini-budget was rejected.

Will that be the same draft as mentioned in the Guardian article?

Extraordinary. But it's made incredibly sad. What a bloody waste for this country.
We can do better then this.

DowningStreetParty · 30/09/2022 06:32

How can we get an election to happen? Who do we campaign to, what do we do? It is undermining all our hope and faith in democracy that this horrific bunch of craven Tories are allowed to take us to financial hell in a handcart with absolutely no democratic mandate.

My useless backbench Tory MP is sick of hearing from me and if they had a conscience would not have stuck with the Boris party line for three years so I will carry on emailing regularly but it feels increasingly like a waste of unaffordable electricity to do so.

We need an election!!

the80sweregreat · 30/09/2022 06:39

It's a case now of waiting for the OBI meeting today and let's see how the new PM and chancellor can put their fiscal event across to them. They will be tougher than a BBC local news presenter I would imagine and they were not holding back.
They will probably just spin it as ' nothing to see here ' and I doubt we will get the full picture anyway.
The GE should have been in July , they spent months naval gazing instead
Still, have to see how it pans out I suppose.,
