and stress that other counties face disruption

Reading a few threads on here, I can already call bingo on that one.

I survived without central heating. That's why I'm horrified at the prospect of going back there, it was bloody miserable. Besides which, we're not prepared this time round. When I was a kid we had thermal underwear, thick woolen blankets, thick socks knitted by grandma, and endless supply of really cold weather clothing. I don't know about anyone but I don't have any of that now and if people can't afford to put the heating on they also won't be able to afford to stock up on thermals.

This. I used to sit on top of a gas fire in my hippy chic 1930s fur coat. Difference is I was in my early 20s. I’m nearly 70 now and feel the cold a lot more. No way do I want to return there.

Well, if other countries are having similar things going on, maybe the media should mention it more? Just for balance really .
Im the very first to have a rant about the government, but maybe more awareness of why might not go amiss too.

We need Clav back for that.......

The other countries trope is bollocks. Which other economy has the IMF commented on?

But they are just biased and overstepping the mark. Apparently.

Is Clav Liz, they both seem to have disappeared.

That media thread is bonkers. Another reason we have the crash is that it was going yo happen anyway so Truss has done us a favour by hurrying it along. We should all be grateful.

Kwasi Kwarteng comments on the suggestion by his junior Treasury Secretary Chris Philp that the UK may not hike benefits in line with the rising inflation.

"We are talking about helping people in the round. It's premature of me to come to a decision about that" Kwarteng says

twitter.com/kitty_donaldson/status/1575496003406659584?s=46&t=2njNuCaF6nCrnF0d59f8bA

Not too premature to ditch the cap on bonuses though.
People on benefits use their money and use it locally. It gets straight back in to the economy.

Welcome! This is one of the last bastions of sanity here!

🚨 The IEA and @the_tpa are delighted to announce that we will be hosting Chancellor of the Exchequer, @KwasiKwarteng, for an In Conversation at this year's Conservative Party Conference!

🖥️ Tune in on Tuesday 4th October here!👇

The Institute of Economic Affairs & The Taxpayers Alliance are Tufton Street buddies. Worth a listen to yesterdays The News Agents podcast to hear a bit more about them.

Notonthestairs · 29/09/2022 15:59

Sorry I meant to give you a wave hello Achilles!

Notonthestairs · 29/09/2022 16:07

Good news - OBR report to be published by end of October so before the next BoE meeting. Ridiculous that they thought they could leave it til afterwards.

First draft to be with KK next Friday. I guess they will want to revise elements...

"at the World Bank, we did hundreds of investor surveys on what determined their willingness to invest in a country...Low taxes and enterprise zones were always near the bottom" on.ft.com/3SFdrE9 via @FT

What would the World Bank people know?
Annoyingly I can't read the full article.

Well it makes sense to me.

What's the point of investing in an economy because the tax is low when none of the people who live there have any money to spend on their enterprise?!

That's both the general public and large public sector institutions who have had real term funding cuts and austerity.

Investment needs return.

Blah blah....China did it too....Putin's Energy Crisis...

Dear lord.

I heard that. Radio 4. But Japan did the same.

Putins fault.

Notonthestairs · 29/09/2022 16:15

Funnily enough the World Bank concluded macroeconomic & political stability, high quality infrastructure and skills were key for investors Itsgettingweird.

It’s a very strange concept that investors will be attracted to a country with a trashed economy. And lunatic politicians.

Has Truss started sweating about that yet Wink

AchillesLastStand · 29/09/2022 12:32

I’ve moved over to this thread for my sanity, far too many heads in the sand. Truss and Kwarteng have no electoral mandate for the policies they’re implementing. They’re running a banana republic and we’re just sitting back and taking it. I’ve never felt so depressed about the future of the country, not even after Brexit.

Absolutely.

Levelling up with the major part of the mandate.

They are deliberately doing the opposite internally and internationally levelling is down at the same time.

I agree with those who say it's criminal as they work for us.

Blossomtoes · 29/09/2022 16:47

It’s a very strange concept that investors will be attracted to a country with a trashed economy. And lunatic politicians.

A certain type of predatory vulture like asset stripping disaster capitalist finds the vulnerable attractive because the vulnerable have few options and few defences and can be very thoroughly exploited then abandoned.

It's not the kind of "investment" anyone would want for a country they cared about.

NEW: two new polls out show enormous leads for Labour.

Survation: 21 points
YouGov: 33 points.

That is wipeout territory for the Conservatives.
