How many coats should a woman own

Hi, I'm here today because I'm addicted to shopping especially when I'm feeling low, online shopping. Recently I've been buying alot of coats in all colours they not too expensive but do I really need all of them.
How many coats should a woman have?

OP posts:
ParkheadParadise · 25/09/2022 19:23

I have about 15 I think.
Everyday coats, going out coats.

MissyCooperismyShero · 25/09/2022 19:24

Proper coats, I have two. One short, one long. Other than that I have three jackets, one gillet and a packable Mac.

DenbyChina · 25/09/2022 19:25

Hmm. Maybe one each for:
waterproof
warmth
changing seasons: denim for spring and slightly warmer bomber type for autumn
evening
spare

Maybe six?
I’ve got waterproof for work, a denim jacket, wool coatigan and two light weight (so not for warmth!) wool coats. However, I am planning to make myself (I sew) a bomber jacket, mid length mohair jacket which will be padded so super warm and a green coatigan. Covid has meant that I haven’t really needed massively warm jackets for a little while.

I keep numbers of clothing items down by ticking boxes - so, long coat, short coat, outdoors spring / autumn jacket, outdoors winter jacket, waterproof jacket. So, I've got 5 I think.

I get the shopping as therapy thing though, 💐 OP.

Dacadactyl · 25/09/2022 19:27

I have 4. A winter one, a summer one, a hiking one and a going out/dressier one.

LimeCheesecake · 25/09/2022 19:28

If you are comfort shopping, stop. I know I did it and those clothes end up bringing bad memories, not making you feel good.

(I currently have 10 coats.)

Hillrunning · 25/09/2022 19:28

There isn't a correct number or even range that would apply to all women, so it's a bit of an odd question. Hmm

If you are spending more money than you have and its impacting you negatively then you should address your spending habbit.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 25/09/2022 19:28

I have two leather jackets, a denim jacket and a cord jacket.

Long flappy coats stress me out.

FGSWhatNow · 25/09/2022 19:29

I've also got around 15 or so, if you count coats, jackets and waterproofs... Blush

I still think I've got a few gaps in my wardrobe though, so there's potential for more...

I guess the question for you is can you afford it? If so, crack on and enjoy your coats!

Mol1628 · 25/09/2022 19:30

Depends on your lifestyle.

Ive got three. Proper winter coat. Autumn jacket. Foldaway rain Mac thing

starsinyourpies · 25/09/2022 19:30

Leather jacket
Lightweight waterproof
Mega warm thick waterproof
Trench coat
Wool coat which needs replacing

I think that's pretty minimalist!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 25/09/2022 19:30

I have honestly never bought myself a coat.
My mother keeps buying them for me despite my telling her I don't wear them. I use an umbrella.

Appalonia · 25/09/2022 19:31

I have 5 fake fur coats, 2 waterproof jackets, 2 leather jackets, 3 wool coats, 2 suede jackets. I think you need different coats for the weather, length of outfits and different occasions. That's my excuse anyway!

cariadlet · 25/09/2022 19:31

I've got a parka style jacket for the winter, a denim jacket and a pac-a-mac waterproof.

Plus hoodies which work as lightweight coats when I'm not at work.

I could really do with something lightweight for work when it's cool enough to need something but not actually cold.

That's plenty for me but I'm not really interested in clothes shopping.

There's no right or wrong answer for how many coats anyone should have. As many as you need or want as long as you can afford it and it doesn't impact on ability to pay the bills, pay for what any children need etc.

MintJulia · 25/09/2022 19:32

No idea how many we should own but I have

A long tailored wool coat
A shooting jacket
A lambs wool evening jacket
A long riding mac
A black and brown animal print mac
Two ski jackets

OldTinHat · 25/09/2022 19:32

I have one long, one short, a foldable mac, a waterproof jacket, a denim jacket and a fancy mid length Joe Brown's.

GeorgeorRuth · 25/09/2022 19:32

I have 2
Old one for dog walk and
A newer one that is a fleece that can be zipped out of a outer waterproof one.

butterfliedtwo · 25/09/2022 19:34

I have one winter coat and a rain coat. Both 6 years old.

Goldendoodlemum · 25/09/2022 19:36

I have way too many. To hazard a guess, at least 20+ coats. I do wear most of them on a regular basis though.

GrimmTales · 25/09/2022 19:39

All my coats are second hand. I have five:
two long winter wool coats
two heavy cotton coats for spring, autumn
one padded puffa jacket for winter

miffmufferedmoof · 25/09/2022 19:39

I have one winter coat, one spring/autumn coat, one thin waterproof and a gilet

ihatesoaps · 25/09/2022 19:40

I don't think I'd better answer this...
I have 40+ jackets in all colours and fits...leather jackets in blue Black and Tan, a denim jacket and other fitted jackets to go with trouser suits plus more casual jackets to go with jeans etc...
I have a velvet jacket, and a men's style dinner jacket, and a formal cream jacket with satin lapels (part of a suit)
I have a real fur, two fake furs (brown/black), a pink fur, a cream fur, an animal print fur...
I also have all colours of the rainbow in longer woollen type coats...except purple!
I have two trench coats, three quilted coats in different colours....

I just couldn't wear the same coats week in and week out.
How monotonously boring!
Coats finish off an outfit perfectly!

ARoyalSubject · 25/09/2022 19:40

Winter coats, I have a warm, waterproof green parka thingy for every day / dog walking / trips to the beach, and a black fake fur jacket for going out / funerals / when I want to look smarter.

Summer coats, I have a zip up black fleece for summer walks if chilly, and a denim jacket for evenings out.

I think that's it.

Where on earth do people store 15+ different coloured coats?!

Appalonia · 25/09/2022 19:40

Also, the UK is a cold, wet country and we wear coats for at least half the year, so I DO actually wear all my coats and I've had some for many years, so I think they are a useful investment. Unlike dressy dresses that maybe get worn twice a year.

GoldenGorilla · 25/09/2022 19:40

I have maybe 7?

Formal smart wool coat
Long warm waterproof
Long warmish waterproof
Hip length warmish waterproof
hip length light waterproof
knee length light waterproof
Hip length pack a mac

I live in a rainy place and have an autistic kid who needs to be outdoors a lot!
