Hi, I'm here today because I'm addicted to shopping especially when I'm feeling low, online shopping. Recently I've been buying alot of coats in all colours they not too expensive but do I really need all of them.
How many coats should a woman have?

I have:
One thick longer winter coat
Two short jackets with hoods
A cagoule for hiking, days out when it might rain
Fleece
Smart mac I hardly ever wear
Ski jacket (left over from when I used to go skiing) which is very warm and I sometimes wear in the winter.

So 7. Not all worn regularly.

MinervaTerrathorn · 25/09/2022 20:15

At least one, if in the UK or similar climate. I have a puffa jacket, a wool blend thigh length coat and a basic rain jacket

MinervaTerrathorn · 25/09/2022 20:17

DS has a coat and a pack a mac (do boys/men have different coat requirements?).

i have two leather biker jackets one for summer one for winter riding,
a velvet padded jacket for work in winter,
a denim jacket for work in spring autumn
a faux fur jacket for going out in
and an outragously expensive long suede and sheepskin coat that i hardly ever wear but OH bought that one not me

Gettingbythanks · 25/09/2022 20:19

I don’t own any coats, I don’t like them 🤷‍♀️

HundredMilesAnHour · 25/09/2022 20:20

I'm shocked at how few coats some people have. 😮

I have many, many, MANY coats. Too many to list or count. Some are work coats (so very formal office wear varying from lightweight trenches of different lengths/colours to long cashmere/wool coats etc), some are practical outdoor coats (winter walking in lockdown definitely added to that!), some are evening coats (such as a navy blue satin long fitted coat from Christopher Kane), some are just for fun....and some look fabulous but aren't very practical (capes and bags don't mix grr). I've built up my collection over decades and they all get used. Some are faithful friends, some bring back old memories, some won't be around forever and will move to the charity shop.

My father is the same. He's obsessed by coats. I think it just be genetic. 😂

Oiseaux · 25/09/2022 20:21

I have:

  • a long dressy winter coat (not especially warm though)
  • a retro velour blazer (perfect for autumn)
  • a summer stripey/denimish jacket/blazer
  • two thick winter jackets (one pale, one dark)
  • one summer jacket, bomber-style (very thin, not puffy)
  • summer trench coat
  • two ski jackets
  • two body warmers (one puffer style, one fluffy)
  • casual navy jersey blazer for summer

Seems perfect for me. One for every need/season/occasion.

ChannelIsland · 25/09/2022 20:22

However many my mum has, minus 10!

wetpebbles · 25/09/2022 20:24

1 puffa for winter
1 parka style for autumn
1 denim for spring/summer
1 waterproof pack a Mac

ChocChipOwl · 25/09/2022 20:25

You've got me thinking!

An Isabel Marant wool coat

3 leather jackets

A padded long duvet boden coat

Bird + Wolf camo jacket

Levi's denim jacket

New look smart ish coat

Aviator type fit lined coat

Whistles trench

Super dry utility

More than enough really

MinervaTerrathorn · 25/09/2022 20:25

I'm not that keen on coats. I wear my puffa jacket 95% of the time I need a coat and my wool blend coat 5% of the time. I like to be able to stuff a coat into a backpack if I get warm. Same with jumpers, I like lightweight merino jumpers, nothing bulky or heavy or I feel burdened.

HappyMum543 · 25/09/2022 20:27

Yes, i could afford it i work hard for it, but I really don't need all of them & this includes perfumes & bags...
I'm gonna try to cut down starting from today...

A wool coat for smart, a dog walking coat and a beige Burberry style Mac for when it isn't so cold. Also a leather jacket, but that doesn't really count as a coat.

Georgesgrumpymedicine · 25/09/2022 20:47

Denim jacket (casual)
Raincoat (casual)
Winter parka (casual)
Cotton summer jacket (semi smart)
Mid-weight parka (semi smart)
A warm puffer coat (semi smart)
A work wool coat (smart)
Trench coat (smart)
A summer gardening coat (scruffy)
A winter gardening coat (scruffy)

We live in Britain and have extremely changeable weather and I like the right coat for each weather/ smartness.

rosenecklace · 25/09/2022 20:50

To those of you with lots of coats, where do you keep them all?
In my house, coats take up so much space!

Bloodybridget · 25/09/2022 20:51

Two winter coats, one waterproof. The other is seven years old. One cagoule which is about five years old. A cotton drill jacket, three years old, and a very new, warm winter jacket. I do love coats and jackets, but I don't want to have more clothes than I need.

LowbrowVictoriana · 25/09/2022 20:52

Blimey, if you also include jackets then I probably have 30+.
I even bought a new (to me) coat today! Blush . I LOVE coats.

There is no "should" about it. However many you want is the right number. I always buy 2nd hand and keep things for years.

BirmaBrite · 25/09/2022 20:55

None ?

OxanaVorontsova · 25/09/2022 20:59

n+1 where n= the number currently owned

LibertyLily · 25/09/2022 21:00

I've got nine -

Three smart, warm, full length winter coats
One long quilted raincoat
One 3/4 length quilted raincoat with hood
One unlined smart wool coat
One thin hooded jacket
One cagoule
One unlined cotton coat

A couple of the winter coats I've had for more than 15 years but as I rotate them they're still in great condition. My style is quite boho so tend not to buy the latest trends in clothes either...

We have a wardrobe for coats in our hallway and store out of season ones in the loft

MinervaTerrathorn · 25/09/2022 21:04

I don't think you can start including warmer weather jackets as we don't all wear jackets. Is a work fleece a jacket as it has a zip or a jumper?
I wear jumpers or a hoodie in warmer weather.

lljkk · 25/09/2022 21:23

you can only wear one coat at a time.
I imagine I wear one about 5x/year. One for a lifetime is about enough for me. I actually have 3 or 4. Still only wear any form of coat about 5x/year.

I suppose I have about 10 jackets. 2 fleece ones (hand me downs), a generic blue one that lives at work, a cycling jacket, a Goretex walking jacket and... hmmm. I found a nice jacket/coat DS left behind. Guess that makes 6 jackets. I love being an age where I inherit DC's cast offs.

Antinori86 · 25/09/2022 21:24

As many as she wants and bring her joy!

I am a big big coat fan, so:

  • Edwardian black velvet dress coat
  • Camel wool city coat
  • Black wool city coat
  • Beige tweed cape
  • Black/white houndstooth cocoon coat
  • Vintage black trench
  • Navy trench
  • Beige trench
  • Grey high neck cocoon coat
  • Vintage white silk cape
  • White/black high neck cocoon coat
  • Khaki parka
  • Pea green wool belted coat
  • 1950s cobalt blue belted flared coat
  • Green tweed riding jacket
  • Green cropped high neck jacket
  • 1940s black embroidered wool flared coat
  • 1940s orange silk embroidered brocade coat
  • Pea green trench
  • 1950s teal/black flared coat

This does not include my blazer and work jacket collection. All collected over about 15 years but should hopefully last for many many more!

TheDogsDinner · 25/09/2022 21:25

I have four.
I had a black pure wool maxi coat, which comes to my ankles that I wore every winter for years. When it wore out eventually I had a tailor make me a replica, which I still wear every winter.
