Hi, I'm here today because I'm addicted to shopping especially when I'm feeling low, online shopping. Recently I've been buying alot of coats in all colours they not too expensive but do I really need all of them.
How many coats should a woman have?

@lljkk DS has a nice coat in a men's small I have my eye on for the minute he outgrows it! His last one was an age 13 and a bit short in the arms for me so had to go to charity.

MaryTruss · 25/09/2022 21:27

I never wear one, if it's chilly I wear a wool jumper Sarah Lund style

This has been eye-opening. I have one raincoat, a 3/4 length swing jacket for spring/autumn and a proper winter coat. Can't fathom having anymore or the idea of tying a coat to an outfit. It just goes over the top depending on the weather.

DH has about 8 because he keeps experimenting with trying to find one that is the right combination of warmth and waterproofness and they annoy be just seeing how many hooks they take up.

DC have two each, a winter coat and a light waterproof.

Titsywoo · 25/09/2022 21:29

I have a quilted short autumn coat, a long thick winter one, a denim one, a leather one, 2 smart wool ones (a dark green one and a white one). I think that is enough for most occasions!

HappyMum543 · 25/09/2022 21:30

Wow, these coats are just up my street...

I have 1 jacket, it's waterproof and warm, it's also from the mens section because it's got lots of pockets and a hood Idont do handbags. I also have a poncho.
My go to misery buy is slippers. 😁

nokitchen · 25/09/2022 21:31

Maybe 20? I've had some of them for decades. I tend to keep watch on eBay for what I want if it's going to be expensive. Have picked up some brilliant nearly new bargains over the years

Rutland2022 · 25/09/2022 21:32

I have 4 riding coats (long, Spring and 2x warm winter-all waterproof), they stink so are kept separate from non riding wear.

For normal use I have 1 long padded winter coat, 1 waterproof coat and 1 casual jacket.

I was too fat for my smart coat so charity shopped it recently with another jacket that fitted poorly. Next time I need a smart one I’ll buy one. My winter coat is also tatty so I’d like a new one but waiting for the sales as I’m too poor!

I’d say 5 is optimum excluding hobby/specialist ones.

WarmWinterSun · 25/09/2022 21:32

good question!

  1. waterproof and windproof coat for school runs

  2. more dressy coat for work and meetings

  3. coat for walking the dog which will get dirty

  4. dress coat for dinners and evening events

  5. weekend coat to look smart for shopping, etc

that should cover it!

nokitchen · 25/09/2022 21:32

Never found a leather jacket that will suit me though I've tried many times

dudsville · 25/09/2022 21:33

A coat that can go to a funeral/formal
A coat for rain
A coat for winter weather
A coat for spring/autumn
A coat(s) for casual

The number is meaningless as some of these can double up.

FindingMeno · 25/09/2022 21:38

2 smart woollen types in grey and black.
2 casual anoraks in black and camel.
I puffa.
I pac a mac.
I lightweight shower proof navy blue jacket.

MinnieJumbo · 25/09/2022 21:39

Depends on budget for sure!

I’ve two dark wool long dress coats.
Opera coat which is dressier still.
3 macs in different colours and weights.
Cream coloured mid length coat.
Fashion quilted jacket for day to day.
Country quilted x2 (for being at the stables etc)
Proper rain mac (as above/walking)

Going to buy a tan long coat this winter, either classic or teddy.

Thats before jackets/blazers etc…

MinnieJumbo · 25/09/2022 21:40

Oh and three long puffers.

ok that’s more than I thought!!

pointythings · 25/09/2022 21:42

Well, I have 2 fleece cape coats in different weights (one cost me £2 from a charity shop), 1 seriously warm Loden coat which belonged to my grandfather and is 80 years old, 1 fleece for archery in winter and 1 gorgeous wool vintage style coat for best. So I'm going with 5.

Youthinkyoureuniqueyourejustastatistic · 25/09/2022 21:43

2
A lightweight raincoat and a warm winter one.

I'm a woman and I find I certainly can have too many clothes. I wear what I love so some just end up not being worn. I pass on what I don't wear.

GyozaGuiting · 25/09/2022 21:54

I love coats Op, I have 15; I’m quite outdoorsy, so I genuinely need several coats for different activities- light waterproof, running jacket, cross country ski jacket, cold weather ski jacket, hiking body warmer, hi vis for running… then I have to dress in fairly formal attire for work, so suit jackets, woollen winter coat type vibe… coats are my thing! If you can afford it enjoy it!

mondaytosunday · 25/09/2022 21:57

I have two, one smart wool coat, one 'I'm going into a blizzard with the dogs' long jacket. I didn't wear either last year.
My daughter (17) has two puffer type jackets, a rain jacket and various hoodies. No coats as such.
My son has about five jackets - mostly lightweight.
I think three is good: one smart, one for really cold days, one for rain/spring/Autumn. If you have more it's for fashion really. If that's where you want to spend your money that perfectly legit.

RosesAndHellebores · 25/09/2022 22:01

Quite a lot but I tend not to buy more than one a year.

Ancient Burberry trench coat
Classic khaki mac
Navy coatigan
Blue linen long jacket
Leather flying jacket
Quilted winter jacket - new this year
Fur collared smart swing coat - three quarters length
Below the knee smart grey coat
Tweed casual coat
Velvet evening coat
New velvet evening coat
Lightweight waterproof jacket

I have no wish to own a parka.

I have just put out a pink coat - well worn and probably about 8 years old, and a funnel neck wool coat - well over 10 years old which were looking very worn.

Don't get me started on boots.

tinselvestsparklepants · 25/09/2022 22:06

If you comfort shop, have you tried Vinted, or Thrift? Buying second hand keeps it cheaper and greener, too.

verdantverdure · 25/09/2022 22:12

Smart black coat for work and funerals
Smart coat for work
Running jacket for running
Waterproof Technical jacket for walking and hiking
Ancient Fleece for hiking and casual wear when not raining, and probably indoor wear this winter.
Puffer for when it’s really cold
Long rubberised waterproof for when it's really rainy.
Ancient Mum coat parka for scruffy

TokyoTen · 25/09/2022 22:12

I have 2: black quilted and lingerie like a duvet for cold winter commutes and a lighter rain mac. That's it! Honestly I prefer to save my cash not spend it on stuff I don't really need!

Lifehappenssometimes · 25/09/2022 22:15

Do the posters with lots of coats have big houses and masses of storage? I have about 5 coats (including an anorak thing for bad rain/country walks) plus a leather jacket and my wardrobe is bursting at the seams. I just couldn’t fit any more in - when I got my latest coat I had to take two older ones to the charity shop for storage reasons alone.
