How many coats should a woman own

Hi, I'm here today because I'm addicted to shopping especially when I'm feeling low, online shopping. Recently I've been buying alot of coats in all colours they not too expensive but do I really need all of them.
How many coats should a woman have?

I have many but that's because I'm old, buy good quality and look after them properly so they last forever. I might buy a new one every year or two.

Do the posters with lots of coats have big houses and masses of storage? I have about 5 coats (including an anorak thing for bad rain/country walks) plus a leather jacket and my wardrobe is bursting at the seams. I just couldn’t fit any more in - when I got my latest coat I had to take two older ones to the charity shop for storage reasons alone.

I have 14, I think (posted upthread that I had 13, just remembered one more). Don't think this is a huge amount, but storage reasons is definitely a consideration for not getting more. I have them all (bar the two ski jackets which stay in the loft until we get snow) hanging on one of those over-the-door hook things.

Ok that makes sense, I was imagining everyone with giant walk-in wardrobes (enviously!)

I wish!!! I'd love a good-sized cupboard by the front door for coats, footwear, bags, scarves, gloves.

To those of you with lots of coats, where do you keep them all?
In my house, coats take up so much space!

They really do. I have 8 and they take up half the rail of the off season spare extra wardrobe into which I will soon be depositing sundresses, shorts and sandals and hauling out scarves hats and woolly jumpers.

I have:
Barbour jacket
Denim Jacket
Lightweight Puffer
Warm lined long raincoat
Semi waterproof long coat
Red raincoat
Grey raincoat
Long Puffer
Spring weight quilted Barbour
Long fleece coat
Stockman's raincoat
3/4 length black wool coat (my funeral coat)
Long tweed coat (posh country events)
Short tweed jacket (useful for chilly weddings)

But we have a wet room that is long and narrow so put coat hooks all up one side! (and the posher coats are stored in my wardrobe)

Barring the stupidly flappy stockman coat and the tweeds/funeral coat I wear the rest regularly! I walk the dog in all weathers and often have one coat drying our while I wear the next! And some of the coats are OLD... like 20 years old! I rewax my Barbour every couple of years and I expect it to last at least 25 years!

I have more coats than any other item of clothing, thinking about it!

ladywithnomanors · 25/09/2022 23:53

Wow im
amazed how organised people are. I have one ugly winter coat

Kite22 · 26/09/2022 00:00

The issue isn't whether you can find people who have more coats than you though, the issue is that you said I'm addicted to shopping especially when I'm feeling low, online shopping.
It reads like the start of an alcoholics anonymous meeting.

caringcarer · 26/09/2022 00:09

9 full length coats, 10 jackets, a parka, 2 X dog walking waterproof coats regatta, 5 fleece jackets, a poncho. I have a weakness for a nice coat, but they don't really wear out.

1Step2Step · 26/09/2022 00:24

I would imagine 5 is pretty reasonable in a cold climate. A long coat, a short coat, a casual one, a dressier evening coat and then a classic trench.

It depends on your lifestyle. If you are more country you’d ditch the dress coat and probably have 2-3 trenches and more casual coats.

optimistic40 · 26/09/2022 00:39

I've got quite a few now that I've thought about it! Generally I have a couple of favourites and those get the most wear. I'm glad I have some others for different weather / looks.. but could get rid of a few. I've probably got about 12 and there are 3-4 getting waaaay more wear than the others.

It's a shame you thought it started off like an alcoholics meeting 😆 🤣 😂
Thanks for your opinion...

I’m thinking to the tune of: how many roads must a man walk do-own before he can call himself a man…

crossstitchingnana · 26/09/2022 06:49

1 warm coat
1 waterproof warm coat
1 short winter coat

Isyesterdaytomorrowtoday · 26/09/2022 06:59

One waterproof lightweight
one duvet parka for winter dog walking
one Barbour style casual for in between seasons
one dark wool proper coat
one light wool proper coat
one ‘dress’ coat for evening wear
one mac

Annoyed200722 · 26/09/2022 07:04

I have about 7:

black wool winter coat (12 years old!)
didrikson winter waterproof parka
green Autumn jacket
smartish warterproof
basic outdoors waterproof
wax jacket for walking the dog
denim jacket for summer

I hope to buy a new wool, winter coat this year, to replace the ancient black one!

Curledupnow · 26/09/2022 07:09

I don't know how many I have but it's double digits. I need my waterproof duvet coat and a waterproof coat for summer, the rest are only worn occasionally on a night out.

KingscoteStaff · 26/09/2022 07:14

1 Barbour.
1 ski jacket.

Dh does occasionally mutter about the costs (and boots) situation in the house 😂 Most of them live in the cupboard under the stairs, which is full height, then we have a row of pegs by the back door for outdoorsy activity coats. My running one packs into its own pocket, so that at least takes up no space…

felulageller · 26/09/2022 08:12

A long faux fur coat for winter
A trespass short jacket with hood for rainy days spring- autumn
A long trench coat/ Mac for smarter days in spring and autumn
A cord denim style jacket I've hardly worn
A hoodless waterproof jacket that's missing a button so I can't wear til it's fixed
A short, fitted puffa for this time of year
A leather knee length coat for nights out if it's not too cold/ rainy (so only worn twice!)

I have 3 others that no longer fit me but I can't bear to get rid of

Cheesewiz · 26/09/2022 09:43

I have 3, a waterproof, a parka and nice smarter coat

Drysner · 26/09/2022 10:58

Have 3 thick warm waterproof jackets that I mostly wear for work and then one dufflecoat.

verdantverdure · 26/09/2022 14:12

Are we counting shackets? I've got a fleece lined one on today indoors because it's pretty chilly here but it could be worn outside as a jacket if I didn't live in a rainy country. I also have a poncho, but that's also for indoor wear.

I think I still have my 90s/00s denim jacket too. I might dig it out because I'm getting the feeling that denim jackets are "back".

clowerina · 26/09/2022 14:13

one smart one, one super warm one, one lightweight summer one, and maybe a packa mac!
