I didn't think I looked that rough!

A woman in the supermarket was chatting to my 11 month old DD and said "are you out shopping with granny?"

I was so stunned I couldn't say a word.

I am an older mum at 40 and she hasn't slept through in the last week but I didn't think I looked that rough!

Ouch! How old was she?

Marshmallowmountain · 23/09/2022 17:09

Incredibly rude! Silly woman

catchthedog · 23/09/2022 17:10

you are old enough to be her granny though so not that offensive? just a mistake.

gretr · 23/09/2022 17:10

Oh god that’s awful! In a similar vein I had two colleagues comment on my ‘pregnancy’ (I had a baby a year ago) - haven’t worn that dress since!!!

inappropriateraspberry · 23/09/2022 17:10

To be fair, at 40 you could easily be granny to a baby! Her experiences are probably only with younger mums, so didn't think about the possibility that you could be mother!

PugInTheHouse · 23/09/2022 17:13

Was it an elderly lady? In her defence you are old enough to be a granny and not that many years ago it was more unusual to be over 25 having a baby let alone over 40 so she may not have been being rude.

gretr · 23/09/2022 17:13

I think it’s unlikely in this day and age a 40yr old is a granny!! Maybe she wasn’t wearing her glasses!! I mean, technically a 32yr old could be a granny, so maybe you should be flattered instead!!

RagamuffinCat · 23/09/2022 17:14

If it is any consolation, someone once told me in the supermarket that I am the ugliest person they have ever seen. I also had someone shout at me in the street that I am one ugly motherfucker.

Mousematty · 23/09/2022 17:15

Meh. I'm 42. A lot of the school mums in my primary school DC classes are a similar age and also grannies.

I've been a great aunt since my 20s.

YumYummy · 23/09/2022 17:18

I think the youngest grandparent in the world is 23!

grayhairdontcare · 23/09/2022 17:18

Years ago I was out with a friend and the shop assistant asked if I was her mum .
She's 6 months older than me !!!

HairyMothballs · 23/09/2022 17:19

At 40, a woman could be a young granny.

My kids were 18 and 16 when I was 40 but I wasn't a granny until I was 52

cookiecreammmpie · 23/09/2022 17:33

I can see how you would find this offensive but you're on the older side to be having a young baby ( no offence) and if you look a bit older than your age, she's come to the conclusion you're her grandmother. I had my first at 20 and so my mum was a young nan in her early 40s.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 23/09/2022 17:42

People are idiots OP!

I’m a nanny. I was walking 10 week old charge last week who was having a grumble and someone stopped me and said “oh He must’ve had you up all night, you look absolutely exhausted you poor thing”

That one smarted a bit 😂

musicviking1 · 23/09/2022 17:45

I know someone who was a grandmother at 30 and her own mother was 45 at the time.

RJnomore1 · 23/09/2022 17:50

I was out shopping with my two daughters a few years back when someone asked my then 14 year old if she was my 9 year olds mum.

PalePurplePumpkin · 23/09/2022 17:51

You're being incredibly rude to grandmothers here

Weird, considering you're more than old enough to be one.

Senseofsomething · 23/09/2022 17:54

I’ve had this. I’m a mid 40s, mum to a primary age child. I don’t look particularly old for my age. I don’t think it means you look old for 40. As others have said, it’s just possible to be a granny at 40 and that person wasn’t thinking much before speaking. A kid in my DDs reception class had a granny who was 36.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 23/09/2022 17:55

I'm 42 and have had two x-rays recently. No-one checked if there was a chance I might be pregnant, either time.

Err…gross

Name1232 · 23/09/2022 17:56

You probably look great to be mistaken for granny to be honest.
Lots of women are grandma's around 40, if I saw a 40 year old looking exhausted I'd be more likely to assume they were mum, if I saw one looking well put together and refreshed I'd be more likely to assume gran.

Kissingfrogs25 · 23/09/2022 17:56

At least she didn't ask when the baby is due, this happened to a friend of mine. Mortifying.

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 23/09/2022 17:56

I was offered an 'Over 60s' 15% discount several years ago (in the pharmacy) several years ago.

I was 48. Blush Shock

Hope that goes a LITTLE way to making you feel better @Magenta82

Also, you don't look rough. Some people are just shit at telling ages. You probably don't look 21, as no-one of 40 does, and no-one looks more than 5-8 years younger when you look properly. But you don't look rough, and you very likely do not look older than you. The woman was rude and thoughtless though I agree.

Do you know the OP personally? If not, how do you know how she looks? Confused

Either way, the OP is being offensive to 40 year old grandmothers and I suspect she knows it.
