Statement from President Biden on Russia’s Sham Referenda in Ukraine
SEPTEMBER 23, 2022
STATEMENTS AND RELEASES
The United States will never recognize Ukrainian territory as anything other than part of Ukraine. Russia’s referenda are a sham – a false pretext to try to annex parts of Ukraine by force in flagrant violation of international law, including the United Nations Charter. We will work with our allies and partners to impose additional swift and severe economic costs on Russia. The United States stands with our partners around the world – and with every nation that respects the core tenets of the UN charter – in rejecting whatever fabricated outcomes Russia will announce. We will continue to support the Ukrainian people and provide them with security assistance to help them defend themselves as they courageously resist Russia’s invasion.

@OwlsDance I can understand it is a serious matter for Russia. It was the last serviceable assault weapon left in their armoury.

Italy has historically had a large contingent who support communism and Russia, I remember reading books about it 45 years ago.

ISW Key Takeaways

Local military commissars are carrying out mobilization orders in a way that suggests a possible disconnect between Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu’s guidelines for partial mobilization and Russian President Vladimir Putin’s demands for haste.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is likely continuing to address systemic issues in Russian senior command by replacing individual senior subordinates.

Russia may be preparing to forcibly mobilize Ukrainian prisoners of war in what may constitute a violation of the Geneva Convention on Prisoners of War. [the ISW put this in large font]

Ukrainian forces likely continued to make gains along the Kharkiv-Luhansk Oblast border and northwest of Lyman.

Ukrainian military officials indicated that the continued Ukrainian interdiction campaign in southern Ukraine is degrading Russian combat capabilities.

Russian sources identified three locations where Ukrainian troops conducted ground operations in Kherson Oblast- northern Kherson Oblast, western Kherson Oblast near the Inhulets River, and northwest of Kherson City near the Mykolaiv-Kherson Oblast border.

Russian forces conducted ground attacks around Bakhmut, Donetsk City, and in western Donetsk Oblast.

Russian authorities continue to coerce residents of occupied Ukrainian territory into voting in sham referenda.

Hoping for some good news on this front, so depressing the UkAF are losing 50 soldiers a day and the gains seem few and far between since the lightening fast counter offensive on Kharkiv.
This war is all so bloody pointless and with Putin doubling down with mobilisation and sham referendums I can't see an end to it all. I used to hope that someone would take Putin out but now I'm worried we'd end up with someone even more extreme and deranged than he is. What a mess.

Congrats on your beautiful duckling Ijsbear, a reminder that it's not all doom and gloom.

My guess would be that bribes by people escaping the country are more easily paid in cash, but it is only a guess.

Ijsbear · 25/09/2022 12:38

Maybe loss of confidence in the banking system too, at least temporarily.

Yes, cash is for bribes and people who need to be paid on the spot, untraceable and no questions asked. Same goes for jewellery, watches and small items of high value. Maybe laptops, toilets and washing machines too.

@Ijsbear love the pictures. Congrats on your new duckling Flowers

"In Belgorod Oblast, a 43-year-old soldier, Viktor Perigibsky, has stolen a KAMAZ and escaped from a military unit armed with an assault rifle. Police and Rosgvardia forces are searching for him". I have a strong feeling we will see a lot more of this in the coming months."

Hope Russian forces spend more time searching for their deserters and rifles than actually fighting.

Further down in the tweet, some very impressive foliage and forest camoflage by UAF.

And even further down, a moving photo of a long line Ukrainians stopping and getting out of their cars (probably fleeing conflict) to pay respect to a long line of UAF troops moving in the opposite direction. You can see why Ukraine defenders will not stop fighting. What a stark contrast to Russian forces.

I've been chatting to relatives this morning, like I sometimes do. To be honest I'm not at my best doing this as I often find it sapping and dispiriting, but then I remember it is worse on the other end. The one that had me pondering the most is a cousin once removed in Dnipro (as in a generation down from a cousin) who has switched from stoical to get me out of here. It seems to me that relatives have had waves of changing emotions and plans over the months and they are not at all in sync.

She had been working in a clothes store pre-war and lost the job there. People were not buying clothes. Now she picks up part time work. 'I go to different jobs. Because of the war, it is difficult to find a good job, there is only enough money for food.'

She has a Ua -enko name (my grandparents are Ru style -ov/-ova) and on her side, not related to me, is a grandmother in Moldova she is considering trying to get to and has said she can come. Moldova has quite a linguistic mix. Getting there though? There are challenges and costs. And she doesn't really want to go, but she does, and she doesn't. I think the longer term prospects in a drawn out war are very much on her mind.

TheABC · 25/09/2022 13:32

50 dead UKR soldiers a day is depressing but not unexpected when it's an active war zone. More interesting are the Russian figures; 250 a day dead. That indicates several thousand in a month, not including wounded-in-action. I can see why fresh Russian conscripts are being rushed to Ukraine after two weeks of training: it's to stop the total collapse of th

Couple of possibly relevant articles of the Convention:

Article 13:

"No prisoner of war may at any time be sent to or detained in areas where he may be exposed to the fire of the combat zone, nor may his presence be used to render certain points or areas immune from military operations."

Article 49:

"The Detaining Power may utilize the labour of prisoners of war who are physically fit, taking into account their age, sex, rank and physical aptitude, and with a view particularly to maintaining them in a good state of physical and mental health.
Non-commissioned officers who are prisoners of war shall only be required to do supervisory work. Those not so required may ask for other suitable work which shall, so far as possible, be found for them.
If officers or persons of equivalent status ask for suitable work, it shall be found for them, so far as possible, but they may in no circumstances be compelled to work."

Whether Russia cares about any of the above??

This is just such wonderful news. She must have suffered so much, and to get out and now to have her baby - just wow.

About the Ukrainian POWs maybe being made to fight their own people - that was the implication but it's not spelled out.

Russia has shown 0 signs of abiding by the Generva convention in its treatment of prisoners - Olenivka murders, the starving of the Azovians.

Well if you're leaving the country, you'll want as much cash with you as you can possibly carry.

The queue at the border with Georgia is 10km long! That's thousands of people in just one spot, there'll be other crossings just as busy.

Russia may be preparing to forcibly mobilize Ukrainian prisoners of war in what may constitute a violation of the Geneva Convention on Prisoners of War.

But Russia says that they're not at war - it's only a "Special Military Operation" Hmm

Therefore, the prisoners can't be POWs Confused and so Russia can force them to fight Angry

It truly is Orwellian Newspeak Sad
