Please don't cancel

I'm not sure the Queen would have wanted things cancelled.

Anyone know if the inter counties athletic championship for u17 in Oxford tomorrow is going ahead?

Why did channel 5 cancel kids’ tv?? Ffs! A 3 year old doesn’t give a shit, what a stupid thing to do. I really hate the world

This times a fucking million

Setting aside the rather niche knowledge to answer the 2nd part of the OP, I completely agree with the "Please don't cancel" thinking.

The English Football League have cancelled all matches this weekend. I don't understand why.
Our wonderful Queen, who was 96 years old and lucky enough to be well enough to be working until a couple of days before her death (not that I would want to be working at that age, but I mean cognitively sharp and physically able to be up and dressed etc) has died. Obviously it is sad for her children and Grandchildren but for everyone else it is a time to look back at all this remarkable woman has done for the UK and the Commonwealth. We do not all need to put our lives on hold however.
I would have presumed there will be a public holiday for the funeral but that the rest of us carry on our lives as normal.
The Queen has always been a 'put your face on and carry on with life" person. I don't think she would have agreed with the world stopping for day and days.

Actually yes - reading this I would say I am not in 2 minds - I agree with this.

My sons football match has been cancelled on Sunday. Not sure what I make of it all really. I know some will be really upset and others not so!

frothy bollocks

Frothy bollocks would be an excellent user name.

SayThatYouLoveMe · 09/09/2022 13:09

It's going ahead: www.hampshireathletics.org.uk/events/tf-ic-under17and15.html

See you there 😉

Baggyeye · 09/09/2022 13:14

My DC's first football match of the season has been cancelled as has football training as has their tickets to a Professional game this weekend. Sad news obviously about the queen but not sure that stopping kids weekend sport is necessary. They woulod have prefeered school to have been closed today!

sunnydaytoday0 · 09/09/2022 13:15

The Bank of England has announced it's delaying next Thursday's planned interest rate decision by a week.

Good job we're not in a time of economic crisis or anything!

Baggyeye · 09/09/2022 13:15

They would have preferred school to have been closed today!
Why is there no edit button?!

Baggyeye · 09/09/2022 13:18

Just looked on the Gov website
Major Events, Entertainment & Sports
There is no obligation to cancel or postpone events and sporting fixtures, or close entertainment venues during the National Mourning period. This is at the discretion of individual organisations. As a mark of respect, organisations might wish to consider cancelling or postponing events or closing venues on the day of the State Funeral. They are under no obligation to do so and this is entirely at the discretion of individual organisations.
If sporting fixtures or events are planned for the day of the State Funeral, organisations may want to adjust the event timings so they do not clash with the timings of the funeral service and associated processions. As a mark of respect, and in keeping with the tone of National Mourning, organisers may wish to hold a period of silence and/or play the National Anthem at the start of events or sporting fixtures, and players may wish to wear black armbands.

You hate the world because a 3 yo misses a tv channel for one morning? Why not watch cbeebies or an alternative? Or just play on their own. Talk about an over reaction. 🙄

That’s such a shame for him, it feels like if people had already travelled they should have gone ahead. I really hope he can auto qualify

Sadly its been confirmed that only the top seeded athletes will auto-qualify, so the up and coming challengers have missed the opportunity to leapfrog them for a place at the weekend finals (which have been confirmed as going ahead). Shame, as the top seeds were looking very challengeable. Ah well, there's always next year.

Rae36 · 09/09/2022 13:27

What is and is not cancelled seems very random. Ds's event is going ahead tomorrow and Sunday as planned. I'm sorry for those who have had events cancelled. Kids have had so much disruption and now there's even more. I don't think the Queen would have wanted things cancelled and kids disappointed on her behalf. Apart obviously for things that can't go ahead for logistical reasons.

My child is recovering from cancer and will be gutted if it's cancelled. It's been a tough time for youngsters with COVID cancelling everything. But please do go ahead and have a good laugh

That's obviously a tough situation op, but clearly no one on this thread could possibly have known that, and it's really bad form to use it in such a passive aggressive way against people who (understandably!) found it quite funny that you asked about such a specific event. It's like me asking you if the Mens 1st Xl vs Newbury is still being played tomorrow?!

RealBecca · 09/09/2022 13:35

The queen gave us 2 bank holidays for the platty jubes just a few months ago. Doesn't that compensates a little inconvenience for a week or so.

If there is an extra day off for mourning for the funeral people wont be so quick to complain.

phishy · 09/09/2022 13:39

Platty jubes > Envy

I know for a fact that the Queen said the first thing she wanted cancelled was the inter counties athletic championship for u17 in Oxford.

Soz.

Laughing about this 10 minutes later!

I was a bit wtf about my children's sporting events being cancelled but have reflected and think that it's good for them to know how important and unique the Queen was.

MelodyPondsMum · 09/09/2022 13:48

Did you mean to post this on MN because it reads like a private WhatsApp? Our sporting events have been cancelled. Well, they've been rescheduled to be accurate. However no-one on MN would have been able to tell me that.

Twawmyarse · 09/09/2022 13:49

Wam90 · 09/09/2022 12:54

My 3 year old was very sad that he’d never got to meet the queen because he was in my tummy (no idea why he thinks he missed a meeting with her at this point!) but within about 10 seconds he wanted to watch a kids programme again!

😂😂😂

Aren't kids great?

If only everyone had the same reaction as your son. I don't get why things have to be cancelled at all - apart from the fact a lot of people are lazy feckers!

Was Prince Andrew due to attend the u17 athletics? He'll probably have to cancel.

No, he was meant to be at Pizza Express in Woking.

Same here. Sure, I get why high profile football would be cancelled because it is watched by the world, but I really don't think the U10 Surrey League has quite the same status!
