I'm not sure the Queen would have wanted things cancelled.

Anyone know if the inter counties athletic championship for u17 in Oxford tomorrow is going ahead?

OP posts:

I am sorry about your child op, but this thread has given me a much needed smile today x

Eccle80 · 09/09/2022 11:53

@BeetrootBeetrootGhali‘s post really made me laugh!

If it is any vague help, I have seen two local athletics events (an open meet and London mini marathon trials) post that they are going ahead tonight and this weekend, and the open meet said they had had guidance from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, so there clearly isn’t a blanket ban on amateur athletics, but it may not be that all event organisers make the same conclusion

Eccle80 · 09/09/2022 11:56

@workinitout the football carried on last night as fans had already travelled, but the premier league has cancelled matches this weekend.

Sorry to hear your son’s event has been cancelled though, I’d hoped most grassroots and youth events would be able to carry on with an appropriate silence/ mark of respect

Im sure there are loads of people on here who keep up to date with the Inter countries athletic championship for u17s at Oxford.

Rolling 🤣

Fatballs · 09/09/2022 11:59

Frustrated that my son's sport event this afternoon was cancelled - a qualifier for entry to a national championship tournament.

Have these things been cancelled permanently, or just postponed?

cuminpotato · 09/09/2022 12:12

OP, I am in fact familiar with this event having competed in it myself as a teenager! Unfortunately I don't know if it will be cancelled tomorrow though. Fingers crossed it goes ahead.

Sorry to hear about you son's cancer. What event does he compete in? Athletics is a great sport

My son (18) had travelled too. He travelled by train from London to another city and stayed overnight in a hotel. The cancellation email arrived shortly before midnight, so he didn't find out until he woke up this morning, ready to go to the event that he had trained for. Others had travelled much further.

I doubt it will be rescheduled. Waiting to hear whether he will auto-qualify for the main event at the weekend (which hasn't been cancelled yet) or whether he'll just have to come home having missed the opportunity to qualify.

EFL have postponed all fixtures this weekend and our football club has followed. It's only postponed thankfully, hopefully your sons is too?

That’s such a shame for him, it feels like if people had already travelled they should have gone ahead. I really hope he can auto qualify

Oldrockingchair - You hate the world because of cancelled kids TV? That's a very extreme reaction.

Hi OP I've checked the Hampshire Athletics website which says:

SEAA Under 17 and Under 15 Inter-Counties Championships
Following yesterday's sad news, SEAA have this morning confirmed that tomorrow's event is still planned to go ahead (unless they get directed otherwise by UK Athletics).
If the position changes we will let you know as soon as we can.

Fingers crossed for you OP.

We're in the same boat waiting to find out if something will be running or not. After covid cancellations for two years, cancelling grassroots sport (except perhaps on the day of the funeral) is OTT.

Kite22 · 09/09/2022 12:32

Setting aside the rather niche knowledge to answer the 2nd part of the OP, I completely agree with the "Please don't cancel" thinking.

The English Football League have cancelled all matches this weekend. I don't understand why.
Our wonderful Queen, who was 96 years old and lucky enough to be well enough to be working until a couple of days before her death (not that I would want to be working at that age, but I mean cognitively sharp and physically able to be up and dressed etc) has died. Obviously it is sad for her children and Grandchildren but for everyone else it is a time to look back at all this remarkable woman has done for the UK and the Commonwealth. We do not all need to put our lives on hold however.
I would have presumed there will be a public holiday for the funeral but that the rest of us carry on our lives as normal.
The Queen has always been a 'put your face on and carry on with life" person. I don't think she would have agreed with the world stopping for day and days.

How nice that the OP's mum googled for her and joined up to let us know 😂

I think there needs to be a reassessment of national mourning because it seems extremely ad hoc and piecemeal now and is probably not fit for purpose. I'm not sure how it can be thought necessary to cancel eg kids TV and grassroots sport and I'm sure some sort of tribute could be made at public gatherings. The pubs are open, after all. The day of the funeral is different and perhaps the focus should be on that.

Also not sure if it is the best tribute to a racing mad Queen to cancel that, either.

oreobiscitz · 09/09/2022 12:43

Can the endless threads about the queens death be cancelled too?

In fairness, I'm quite sure half the threads started claiming certain demands and cancellations are happening are frothy bollocks.
The office insisting that everyone wore head to toe black or would be sacked. The poster claiming to work in a school and to have been tasked with buying a flagpole so the HT could obtain a flag to fly at half mast.
It's all a bit chinny reckon.

OilCity · 09/09/2022 12:53

Was Prince Andrew due to attend the u17 athletics? He'll probably have to cancel.

Wam90 · 09/09/2022 12:54

My 3 year old was very sad that he’d never got to meet the queen because he was in my tummy (no idea why he thinks he missed a meeting with her at this point!) but within about 10 seconds he wanted to watch a kids programme again!

How are we supposed to know... it's hardly the olympics.

Actually I've been a member of MN for years, have an interest in athletics, and thought that the Hampshire Athletics website might have the info on it.

I have no relationship with the OP!

OrangePumpkinLobelia · 09/09/2022 12:56

I know several things near us have been cancelled. Some social events as well as sports. I am waiting to hear about a whole weekend thing DH was involved in, but thankfully we do not have to travel for it. It would be a pain to lose the £400 or so entrance fee though, but I assume the event will be postponed.

I am in two minds about the cancellations. On the one hand we are in national mourning, and this is a huge moment in our national history. On the other people have trained / travelled etc.
