What do your Dc do with the house key whilst at school?

I've got to take DS to an emergency doctors appointment this afternoon. We will be back 25 minutes after DD finishes school. If I've ever been in this situation before, I've put the house key on a necklace for her to wear (DS would wear it on a lanyard tied to his belt).

DD has double sport this afternoon so can't wear a necklace. Should I ask the teacher if she can hand the key to her for the lesson or should she leave it in a bag in the changing room? I don't want someone to nick it and get into our house!

Mine kept it in their pencil case in their bag

RunWalkSwim99 · 06/09/2022 11:15

Think your over thinking it abit the key will be fine zipped in her bag somewhere. We put a cheap lock box on the side of our house with a key in it. That’s been handy for all of us at different times. Worth doing once kids older.

UniversalTruth · 06/09/2022 11:16

Doesn't she have a locker?

Literally never considered worrying about this - I assume mine leave theirs in their bag or blazer, which would then just be in the changing rooms. Seems unlikely to me anyone would deliberately target your house in amongst all the other stuff left in changing rooms.

NoSquirrels · 06/09/2022 11:17

I mean, it’s possible they could put it in their lockers but I highly doubt they actually do!

dirty clothes vs a house key!

maybe I am over thinking it! They don't have lockers and she wouldn't normally take a bag to school this afternoon.

Could she wear a flat ‘purse belt’ round her waist under her games shirt? I would second having a keysafe for future use. You never have to worry about being locked out again!

TokyoSushi · 06/09/2022 11:19

The chance of somebody stealing the key, knowing where you live and breaking into your house are beyond vanishingly small.

DS just keep his in a pocket in his bag!

CaramelTwirl · 06/09/2022 11:20

Mine just kept it in their bag or pocket.

SchoolInForeignLands · 06/09/2022 11:23

Everyone in her class and the class above knows where we live!

It's clipped to the inside pocket of their bag, on a plastic spring, so it never needs detaching.

Just like my keys (house and car) sit in my bag at work, and aren't always right next to me.

arethereanyleftatall · 06/09/2022 11:53

I have absolutely no idea. In their pocket like everyone else?

nutellachurro · 06/09/2022 11:55

Just leave it in her bag

Onebabyandamadcat · 06/09/2022 11:58

Surely in a zipped pocket in her bag? All through school we never had lockers and I always had keys (as did everyone else after a certain age). Never heard of anyone nicking one during pe time.

I'm sorry I'm not trying to be rude or put down your anxieties but how likely do you think it is that other pupils will be rummaging through another's bag looking for a house key? Is there a lot of theft in the school?

I'm now teaching in some shall we say challenging areas and have literally never heard of this happening. The general public are much like everyone else - would it occur to you to rummage through a bag for a key then rob them? Then it probably isn't occurring to the kids your DD is around either.

BogRollBOGOF · 06/09/2022 12:00

My two have theirs clipped onto their bags on a lanyard (so they don't have to detatch it and risk losing it)
One's secondary, the other primary.

SchoolInForeignLands · 06/09/2022 12:01

So it doesn't bother you that they would be completely insecure and unattended as she'll obviously be in her PE kit? I've always made sure they've had them on them at all times before.

@LionessesRules yes, I did that too but I could lock them in my locker or in the desk if I left to go somewhere.

So you never leave your bag under your desk at work and head into a meeting?

CaramelTwirl · 06/09/2022 12:02

I can't say I ever gave someone nicking my kids house key a second thought.

Azandme · 06/09/2022 12:02

A friend had a keysafe installed so her teens didn't have to carry, and risk losing, a key.

My dd goes up next year. I'm getting one for my back door.

Anothernamechangeplease · 06/09/2022 12:03

How old is she? Surely if she is old enough to come home and let herself into the house, then she is capable of looking after a key?

SheWoreYellow · 06/09/2022 12:05

Does she take a phone to school? Can she keep it in the same place, or even tuck it in the case?

womaninatightspot · 06/09/2022 12:05

Zipped pocket on shorts or tuck it into sports bra.

SheWoreYellow · 06/09/2022 12:06

Or, do you have a back door? As a one-off I would leave a key under something in the garden.

nutellachurro · 06/09/2022 12:07

There are more risks doing this than her leaving a key in her bag for PE.

SchoolInForeignLands · 06/09/2022 12:07

She's 10. As I said it's not a situation that's arisen before because she 's never had to do it for a sports lesson. I put it on a necklace so she couldn't lose it!

I can't install a key safe as we're in a block of flats and it would be no use for this afternoon!

@nutellachurro no, I always put it in my locker and just had a mini bag for my phone and card which I either carried or locked in the desk.

@Onebabyandamadcat only theft of Pokemon cards! Yes, that's a good point. I shall attempt to stop overthinking!
