What do your Dc do with the house key whilst at school?

I've got to take DS to an emergency doctors appointment this afternoon. We will be back 25 minutes after DD finishes school. If I've ever been in this situation before, I've put the house key on a necklace for her to wear (DS would wear it on a lanyard tied to his belt).

DD has double sport this afternoon so can't wear a necklace. Should I ask the teacher if she can hand the key to her for the lesson or should she leave it in a bag in the changing room? I don't want someone to nick it and get into our house!

Back in the day I used to keep mine in my blazer pocket or in my bag.

If she's primary, hand it into the office, she can collect it at the end of the day. This is common practice at my school.

Get a pin-pad lock installed on your door. They really aren't expensive. 4 digits is all they need to remember and you'll never have to cut keys ever again.

Just to add, we're moving soon and a key safe is on my list of things to have installed, handy for nights out as well as teenagers.

Key safe is a pain, you still need a key. Just skip the key altogether and get a pin code lock.

I'm amazed so many parents know where their dc carry their keys. What other fascinating topics of conversation do you have?
'Tell me, Tabitha, where will you be keeping your lunch box today?'
'In the right hand pocket of my back pack mummy'
'Oooh I'm not sure that's wise. What about the left hand pocket, it's a trifle roomier.'
'Good idea mummy. I couldn't have done this without your help.'
'Marvellous. Now, which bowl would you like your porridge in.'

Even if people did know where you live, do you really expect another 10 year old to rummage through the bag, take the key, and opportunistically decide to burgle your house? I really do think you’re overthinking this!

We were advised against this by the locksmith because if there is a problem with the door or code becomes compromised, we need to call out the locksmith and the house would not be locked (or we are all locked out). We have a changeable code on a key safe with the key inside, fitted by a locksmith so fully safe for insurance.

It just went in my blazer pocket at school and I didn't do anything special during pe, it stayed there

This was in the 80's so times have changed but when I was ten a neighbours kid came around and invited me to come play with him at the park. Left door unlocked and his parents came round to rob the place I came back as he never turned up to find them coming downstairs (communal stairs I lived in a flat) with stuff drinking a couple of bottles of my Mum's beer.

Rough council estate; but perhaps some of those kids also have dodgy opportunistic parents.

I remember losing my house key at primary school (and I'm fairly sure I was much younger than 10) and being publicly shamed by having to walk onstage during morning assembly to collect it.

Presumably your child would survive that should it happen.

I don't remember my parents ever giving any thought to where I had the key.
