What do your Dc do with the house key whilst at school?

I've got to take DS to an emergency doctors appointment this afternoon. We will be back 25 minutes after DD finishes school. If I've ever been in this situation before, I've put the house key on a necklace for her to wear (DS would wear it on a lanyard tied to his belt).

DD has double sport this afternoon so can't wear a necklace. Should I ask the teacher if she can hand the key to her for the lesson or should she leave it in a bag in the changing room? I don't want someone to nick it and get into our house!

No phones, no bras and no pockets on her leggings!

SheWoreYellow · 06/09/2022 12:08

For 25 minutes, can she just walk home with a friend?

inappropriateraspberry · 06/09/2022 12:09

So primary, not secondary? That makes a difference! Does she have a lunch box or book bag?

Or even a tray in the classroom, and perhaps ask teacher to remind her to take the key home!

huuskymam · 06/09/2022 12:10

I think you're over thinking this. My eldest two kept theirs in their pencil cases, the bags went from class to class, dumped in a hall, left beside lockers, and in 10 years of secondary we never has an issue.

Regularsizedrudy · 06/09/2022 12:13

I just give it them. I expect it’s kept in their bag. Why would a child want to break into your house?

SchoolInForeignLands · 06/09/2022 12:07

She's 10. As I said it's not a situation that's arisen before because she 's never had to do it for a sports lesson. I put it on a necklace so she couldn't lose it!

I can't install a key safe as we're in a block of flats and it would be no use for this afternoon!

@nutellachurro no, I always put it in my locker and just had a mini bag for my phone and card which I either carried or locked in the desk.

@Onebabyandamadcat only theft of Pokemon cards! Yes, that's a good point. I shall attempt to stop overthinking!

Why do you think 10 year olds would be stealing keys and breaking into houses?

SchoolInForeignLands · 06/09/2022 12:18

😂😂Yes that is a very good point @nutellachurro On the other hand that kids in her class were off to buy non alcoholic beer at the end of last term...anything is possible!

We used to have a keyring with a clip so it could be attached to the inside of our school bag.

No issues with theft if they were unattended in the pe changing rooms.

Why would anyone be rummaging through bags? Surely there is a reasonable level of security at the school so randoms aren't hanging around changing rooms

Starburst8 · 06/09/2022 12:32

Many moons ago I used to keep mine in my school bag, even whilst doing P.E. My bag wasn't always by my side. My eldest kept his in his bag or school blazer - again, the thought of any school children stealing a key to rob a house never entered my head.

I don't quite see the link between 10 year olds buying non alcoholic beer (absolutely fine) and being likely to rummage through bags in the hopes of finding a house key, taking the key, going to the house, breaking in and then doing whatever you think they are likely to do in the house. One is purchasing a drink legally, the other is pre-meditated crime and a pretty unlikely one at that.

Leafy3 · 06/09/2022 12:36

Can't she take a bag in on this occasion?

Leave key with reception for the day?

noclothesinbed · 06/09/2022 12:38

School bag

StolenWillowTree · 06/09/2022 12:39

The chance that there's a 10yr old master criminal in your child's class seems vanishingly unlikely.

EspeciallyDivided · 06/09/2022 12:40

Mine either had them in a blazer pocket, a zipped pocket in their bag or in the early days one of those keyrings with a long stretchy clip thing clipped inside their bag. It never once occurred to me to worry about them being stolen. I leave mine and my handbag unattended at work all the time too (admittedly not public facing).

SchoolInForeignLands · 06/09/2022 11:23

Everyone in her class and the class above knows where we live!

But why would they want to break in?! Makes no sense

covilha · 06/09/2022 12:42

If she wears socks and shoes for PE, just ask her to put it in her sock and to her foot.I have done this myself many times when younger.

Crime of the century. Call the FBI!

Nothing is going to happen if she leaves her key in her bag. It's not like a ten year old is going to take the key, go all the way to your house, let themselves in and fuck off with your telly. And if you're worrying about the adults in school nicking the key then I think there's bigger issues afoot than a potential house key theft.

In the kindest possible way, you are massively over thinking this.

Tdcp · 06/09/2022 12:48

if she's in primary school just tell her to ask the teacher to hold it during p.e.

Why is buying non alcoholic beer an issue?

You're definitely overthinking this

Tdcp · 06/09/2022 12:48

This.

I always kept mine in my school bag but that was at secondary school age, in primary school I would think asking the teacher to stick it in their pocket during PE would be the simplest answer if she doesn't carry a bag to school.

I always just keep a spare key hidden outside for DD rather than have her carry it to school, as then its there if me or OH accidentally lock ourselves out (its happened a few times...)

StolenWillowTree · 06/09/2022 12:55

Is it easy for primary school children to sneak out of school without the teachers knowing? Surely a safeguarding concern?

Yes, put it in her sock. I was pickpocketed at the local lido once but they didn't get my phone because it was in my sock. No one looks inside dirty socks!

SchoolInForeignLands · 06/09/2022 12:56

@nutellachurro you would have no issue with a 9 year old or 10 year old buying beer?

OP posts:
Reallybadidea · 06/09/2022 12:57

Key safe. Very handy in general, not just for kids.

sweetsalted · 06/09/2022 13:00

It’s literally never occurred to me to worry that the children in my kid’s school would go rooting around looking for house keys and then break in to my house Confused. Are you this paranoid about everything in life?
